View Full Version : 3 Wood - which has the biggest head?

06-27-2010, 10:58 PM
For all of you equipment junkies, I have a question. Yesterday my 3 Wood let me down again - I like my Callaway 3W when it is on, but it seems to be off more than it is on, and with 2 swings yesterday probably cost me 3-4 shots in my round of 75. I want one I can trust, and I have it in my head that I would like one with a bit larger head, or even with a titanium head.

So, name me the brands and models of 3W with the largest heads, and let me follow up with a little study.....

check out the ping g15 as well sam! i've long been a fan of the callaway 3w's but imo, there's just better stuff out there right now, at least as far as forgiveness goes.

The cobra line also is pretty big as well, not so much the first speed series but the S2's and the S9 series are big. I just looked at one today.

Not sure on the actual CC's, but the 2007 Callaway BB I game is pretty big. Looked for specs but could not find the CC.

Just wondering. Are you looking for a 3 wood with a large HEAD or a large FACE?

I've owned a bunch of the 3wd listed in this thread, but the largest by far is the original Ping Rapture..it's around 220cc.

Sounds like you're looking for a Titleist 909 F3, which has a deeper face that many better players prefer.

I have a two year-old Burner 3-wood and it's HUGE.

I guess I am amazed that there are no 3W clubs out there with 15-16 degrees of loft that run in the 350-400 cc range in volume. It just seems that one could tee off with huge confidence with such an animal, and with the right sole could feel confident off the fairway as well. I know this club would be useless in the rough, but frankly I don't hit 3W from the rough 5 times a year, and the lie better be perfect then. Those of us that are long enuff to hit thru dogleg fairways from the tee with the driver would seem to be a market for such a 3W. Any more thoughts?

You might try to research the high lofted driver market. Some of those will have the size you want and hopefully the loft.

I did a little looking around and found a few 15* drivers. As far as new equipment goes, it looks like the Adams Speedline Draw and several of the Tour Edge drivers can be grabbed. The only thing is that they are all 1 or 2 degrees closed instead of a square face angle.

I have my eye on one in EBAY - I am laying low hoping it doesn't get bid up too much by the Sunday close on it. If it had the right shaft I would likely bid whatever it takes to get it, but since I will pretty certainly have to replace the shaft in it, I won't get carried away on this bid.

Ah, the magic of ebay! I won!

I bid at the last minute on a Big Bertha Titanium 16 degree 3W - the price didn't get out of hand and I got it for $56. This club will match my driver, but since it is a shaft with Firm flex, I have a strong feeling I will want to put something stiffer in it.

the taylormade superfast 3 wood has a 200cc head

Ping i15 or G15

Not the biggest but the best imo

the taylormade superfast 3 wood has a 200cc head

I don't know if this is perfectly scientific, but the club arrived today, in sweet condition. I took a small bowl, placed it in a larger bowl, and filled the small one absolutely to the brim with water. Then I submerged the 3W head of the Big Bertha Titanium exactly up to the ferrule. Then I took the water that was displaced into the largre bowl and measured it, and was right at 200 ml of water. Since 1 ml water = 1 cc water, I think the 3W has a 200 cc volume.
