Well, it goes like this.
Logan City Golf Club is my home course ... but ... it is a municipal course. I've been a member there for the last 3 years & have used it to learn the game. It is not the most lush course but as a trade off the membership is not that expensive. It's about 30 minutes drive from me.
Not much to see on the website but for what it's worth, here is the link.
http://www.logancitygolfclub.com.au/
Nudgee Golf Club is about 15 minutes drive from where I live & has two 18 hole courses. If I change clubs in the next 6 months, it'll probably be to this one.
http://www.nudgeegolf.com.au/
Similar to some other posters, I have a number of courses in my area that I also like to visit. I'll post some reviews progressively, just in case my northern hemisphere friends are interested.

I don't have a home course, but there are a few I play regularly, and my favorite would be Cypress Creek.
http://www.cypresscreekgolfersclub.com/maintenance.php
Usually I try to find the cheaper rates at the Semi-Private courses instead of playing munis, mostly because for just a few dollars more you can play a much nicer course, and I like a little variety in my courses.

I haven't ever played there. 128 slope is more than I usually play. The 118 looks more my speed! I usually play 5,700 to 6,300 yard courses and try to keep the slope 122 or 23 or lower. If you've ever played Tomahawk in Shawnee Mission, that's the kind of course I like to play the most (slope 118). My wife and I have played Minor Park alot this year since she just started playing. We'll probably play there alot next year also, til she gets a little more experience.

I don't have a home course either. There's plenty of muni's around, and even some day fee courses. The one that I enjoy playing the most though, is Glen Garden.
http://www.glengarden.net/
Built in 1912, it's where Byron Nelson and Ben Hogan learned the game, were both caddies there in the 20's, and is a heck of a lot of fun to play.

don't have one either. i play 20-25 different courses, and about 100 rounds a year. playing that many courses makes it very difficult to get a consistent handicap. i think if played only a couple different courses, i'd easily be a single digit handicapper. i also think the handicap system should allow for this btw, somehow.

I like to move around...play about 3-4 rounds per year. Home courses would be Old Memorial, Black Diamond, Pebble Beach (when on the west coast)...

Hey Smallville. I'm visiting a friend in May who lives in Shawnee Mission. Can you recommend a course in that area? I'm not familar with that area at all.
Smallville
12-11-2008, 09:06 AM
If you want a course that's pretty tough, try Sunflower Hills in Bonner Springs (tell them it's right next to the Amphitheater); regular men's tees are 6,600 yards with a 130 slope (tips are over 7,000 and men's senior tees are still about 6,050 with 123 slope). Of course, from above, Tomahawk is a decent track that's more my length and difficulty level (it's right next to Shawnee Mission Park). St. Andrews and Overland Park are a little farther south but good courses as well. There's some supposedly really nice (pricey)courses (Deer Creek, Falcon Ridge and a few others that I can't think of their names right now!) that I have never played in that area too.

Yup, but you do have to pay the cart fee still which is $16-$21 depending on season. No walking allowed except after 5pm.

ouch, yeah... they will get you there! That's a considerable increase there in the long run
But it is still cheaper than paying $50-$75 a round like many are down here. And if you play once a week, it pays for itself. They also have the GPS on the carts.

Why no walking before 5:00? Too many slow retirees?
Our club is caddies only before 3:00 (unless you're handicapped). After that, you can ride or carry as well.

Strictly based on pace of play. Plus they have the GPS in carts. Down here very few people want to walk. Not really retirees in my neck of the woods that play this course, but way too many slow players.

I love caddie mondays! I played every Monday and Thursdays (primrose course only) when I was working at The Country Club

I just hate paying fee + tip, when I'm happy to carry my own bag. But a good caddy, who really knows the course, is worth it. Plus, as I've said before, there's nothing quite like watching a big burly caddy hoist my bright pink bag.

THIS (http://www.golfarmagh.co.uk/) is my home course. County Armagh Golf Club. I've been a member there for a little under a year (membership is due renewal shortly :beat-up:). I think its a lovely little course, it isn't overly long(only 6200 at the tips, but a par 70). I think it makes up for the lack of being short with the tricky-ness of certain holes. #16 in particular I find very difficult, difficult landing area and a long carry over water (though there is some ground between the water and the green, 10-15 yards or so).
Favourite hole would have to be #8, a par 5, I can't quite figure out why, it just seems to suit my eye (plus, I can get within 50 yards of the green in 2 :act-up:)

I guess my home course would have to be Hackbarth Hills in Janesvile, WI. Its nothing fancy, just a nice little par 3 course. I play there because it only costs $10 to play 9 holes.
All of the fullsize courses around here get about $15 for 9 holes, so I mostly play par 3 courses because they are inexpensive.
Theres 3 of them in my area. Its fun to play a fullsize course every now and then, but I dont hit my driver all that well anyways; so until I get that club figured out I stick to the par 3s.
At least with the par 3s I can usually make par and every once in a while make birdie. Im pretty good with my short irons, wedges and putter; so on a good day I can really score well on the par 3s.

In Western Mass there isn't many big courses, alot of them barely push the 6000 mark. I enjoy a small course called "Ledges" it's a beautiful place, the scenery is awesome (especially during change of season), there is a lot of trees so course management is crucial, and the best part is it doesn't put a big dent in your pocket to go out and play a round of golf.

Been a long time since I played Dub's Dread. Jug McSpadden ws the pro out there for a long time. I'm related to him by marriage (my dad's sister's husband's brother or cousin or something). I played Hodge once and Painted Hills a handful. Tiffany Greens is where they had a Senior event here years ago and it is tough. Tomahawk is one of my favorites. Not too tough and not too easy. Both courses at Smithville (The Outlaw and The Posse) are a tough test. Sunflower I have mentioned before, is the course I learned the game on and broke 100 for the first time last summer.

Jeff: I actually shot a 99 and a 98 the two times I played it last year. Before that, I would guess that my best ever was around 108. Never even came close before. I could sometimes shoot in the upper 40s on the front but would almost always shoot in the high 50s-low 60s on the back. Check out the slope ratings for the course. Men's regular is rated 130 and is 6,600 yards or so. The senior tees are 123 rated and just over 6,000 yards. It is definitely not a short course. (Tips are over 7,000).

I play most of my rounds at Desert Rose GC, but I am a shame to admit it.
http://desertrose.americangolf.com/ The greens keeper, and/or the course superentendent, have not done a good job the past few months. The front desk claims it is because of the cold weather, but this has been one of the mildest winters we have had in the Las Vegas area in quite a few years. Hopefully in the near future they will replace an employee or two, and the new folks will bring it back up to par. Their advertisment about this course being a "jewel in the desert" is pretty far from the truth right now. The only positive things they have going for them right is they tend to keep their green fees down, and they offer a practice facility that let's you practice off real grass. I would not recommend practicing on their putting greens, since would need a ball with 4 wheel drive, but you can chip, pitch, and practice sand shots all day long if you wish. :comp:

I worked the Chrysler/Plymouth Classic (women's), the Coca Cola Classic (women's) and was Chairman of Carts/Caddies for the 10 years we hosted the Senior Cadillac/NFL Classic. I have passed on working the Sybase.
10 years of Monday - Sunday, 5:30 AM to 8:30 PM finally took it's toll...:at-wits-end:
In fact, I do not even go over to the club to watch the tournament and have voted against it. Tired of loosing our club for the full 10 days (set up, tournament, take down) and then the 4-6 week period of conditioning/sodding the East Course from being used for parking and using 1 & 9 for practice ranges. OK.....rant over.

Ouch! Sorry. When I went to the web site, I was surprised the club only has 27 holes--I'd been under the impression it was 36.
You must get privileges someplace else for the duration?
I couldn't tell from the course tour--I think the scariest hole is a par four, dogleg left, with a creek in front of and wrapping around the undulating green. They always put the pin in the far back right corner, and it unnerves me just to look at it.
I walked with Yani Tseng the first round last year, and her tee shot stopped just in front of the creek. It was amazing.

We basically have reciprocals with all the clubs in the metro area....all the time, so it's not a problem getting a course to play as the inconvenience of travelling to the other club.
My group usually plays Ridgewood & Hackensack. Couple times we went to Baltusrol, must their noses were held a little too high for my preference.... :-)
You're talking about 3 South or the 12th hole. That's our signature hole. Great layout.

If any of you are ever in the Fort Worth area you should check it out. You will not find a better public golf course in the DFW area for the price imo.

Well my home course would most likely be Flamingo Lakes. They don't have a website. Its a pretty short course, even from the tips, but its a tough one too. The greens are small and pretty slow, and there are some tough putts on them sometimes too. Personally I don't think its possible to shoot below par there.

Poppy Ridge Golf Course is my 'home' course. It's 45 minutes away, but the closer courses are either dogtracks or cost $100+. Huntersville is about parallel with Concord and actually border each other slightly. Concord is east and Huntersville is west. Both great places about 15 minutes from downtown Charlotte. Concord has a gigantic outlet mall and the speedway for those NASCAR types, while Huntersville has Lake Norman, both great places to have a family and play golf.

The club has had great success with NEVER having initiation or minimums, as well as no assessments ever. Add a 2700sf gym, 3 pools, sand volleyball, and Dye designed course and it is tough to beat. The monthly dues are slight higher then some becuase of the lack of initiation, but we pay $345/month for unlimited golf for me and unlimited everything for the lady-friend/wife. They offer about 6 or 7 different classifications so that you can find something that fits your need, really nice.
The best part for me is that the average age is 42, so there is great networking and leads through there. Very friendly group all willing to help out fellow members when possible.

My "Home Course" changes regularly, but for the last couple of seasons I've been spending a lot of time at the West Sayville Golf Course.
It's one of four county courses and I like it because it's on the water (Great South Bay) and it plays a lot like a links course especially since it's almost always windy. It plays 6715 yards (from the tips) to a par 72 and has a Rating/Slope of 72.1/127.
It's a nice setup for a muni.

Hey Smallville. I'm visiting a friend in May who lives in Shawnee Mission. Can you recommend a course in that area? I'm not familar with that area at all.
Where did you end up playing mytime?

Awsome course!!! One of the top 3 courses in the state by far!!!
This is not my home course but one that I played on a regular schedule until this year the course was closed in order to redesign the course. The link shows some of the views you can get from the course. The one thing that I really liked about the course is all the wild life you can see. During the spring you can get a rare chance to see America's bird the Bald Eagle sometimes as close as 50 yards away sitting in a tree. Fall golf here is just spectator.

My home course is; Etna Acres (http://etnaacres.com). It is a nice 18 hole rural Indiana course which means very fair prices. The front nine is a traditional layout with narrow fairways, lots of trees, some water and very small greens. The back nine, is links style with wide fairways, some water and foregving sized greens. We get two worlds in one course.

When I was growing up, my parents were members at Yellowstone CC (http://yellowstonecc.com/) here in Billings, MT, so that is where I hacked my way around when I wasn't busy playing baseball. It's a beautiful old course that is tucked under the "Rims" which is a 15 mile long 300 ft tall sandstone cliff that borders the northern end of town. I still get out there occasionally, but can't afford my own membership (yet).
Now my home course is about 5 miles down the road at the Peter Yegen Jr GC (http://www.yegengolfclub.com/index.html). It's a family owned public course with a close knit customer base.
I'm also lucky enough to spend a couple weeks in Nuevo Vallarta every winter, and when I'm down there I play El Tigre GC (http://www.eltigregolf.com/)

My home course in Northampton, England is Collingtree Park (http://www.collingtreeparkgolf.com/) golf club.
It was designed by Johnny Miller and opened in 1990 so relatively new. The British Masters were held here in 1995 & 1996. It's a fairly tough course but enjoyable nonetheless.
I play at Woburn (http://www.woburn.co.uk/golf/) about 2 or 3 times a year as it is 20 minutes away and have also had the pleasure of playing a round at the Belfry (http://www.thebelfry.co.uk/).

The Links at Walnut Run in Cortland,OH. This course is probably one of the best kept secrets in Northeast Ohio. $10 for 9 holes + cart, $7 extra to play through again, and it is NEVER BUSY!! I have never seen more than 6 cars at one time in the parking lot. Keys are in the carts, stick your money in the mail slot, and grab a scorecard. They never have anybody working there, you're on the "honor system" there, so bring your own drinks, and if you need to use the bathroom before you play, there's a Speedway about a mile down the road.

Santa Maria is the nicest place we have here in Baton Rouge. It's a Robert Trent Jones Sr. designed course and is open to the public. Used to be a private club but when they went under the Baton Rouge parks and recreation (BREC) bought them out and transitioned it to a publuc course. Prices went up at the beginning of last year but before that it was only $22.00 for 18 holes. Definitely one of the prettiest courses in Baton Rouge!

Located in San Clemente, CA whose town slogan is "World's best weather" this is an amazing place to call home. I travel the world in my profession and with the possible exception of Hawaii I can't think of a place with consistently better golf weather. We do have to endure our 10 - 15 days of rain each year, and long pants are required for 2-3 weeks out of the year (but not every day) when playing golf, I can say that this place does truly have the worlds best weather.

Green Hills Country Club: http://www.greenhillscc.com/Club/Scripts/Home/home.asp
IF I had only one thing to say why it would be my home course: Its an allister Mckenzie design. Every green there has a vicious false front. My worst golf memory is there where I hit in order: Driver, 7 iron, putter, wedge, wedge, putter, wedge, putter, putter. (My temper was nuclear then but now I look back on it and laugh.)
Most people don't know about this one, he's more well known around northern california for pasatiempo and cypress. But Green Hills is a small gem. Its a shame that i've heard that the group that manages the CC is a bunch of idiots. I still have friends who live in the area and two are members. (well both are currently trying to sell their memberships) They both tell me that there is a good chance the CC is gonna go bankrupt. And that scares me that a course with such a prestigeous beginning might be bulldozed over in the future for more over priced houses.

I still consider this my 'home' course although I haven't played it in a couple of years. My father and I used to drive an hour out of our way to play this one. The locals nicknamed the final 5 holes Death Valley due to the shallow geography, high temperature due to low wind below the hills, and because final three holes were the by far the most difficult on the course and have a tendency of destroy otherwise good scores. Years ago when I was still flirting with breaking 100 for the first time, I managed to survive 16 and 17 unscathed and was lying 90 on #18. I then choked in epic fashion and finished with exactly 100.

Classic course in Minnesota--it's too short for the big hitters of today's game, but still a great challenge for the players who still consider most par 4s over 400 yards to be challenging. Poa-Bent greens make for complicated reads throughout the year, but it's been in better shape lately than it's been in a long time. And it's affordable, which is nice. I hope someday they renovate it with some back tees and a modern clubhouse, but it's got charm.

I would have to say the Charleston Municipal Golf is my "home" course, fun, but the ole lady can really put it to you some days. Greens are not receptive 90% of the time, but with the amount of rounds played there every day its understandable for the greenskeeper to do so. My group like to play all over town and Charleston National is our 1st choice, and Pine Forest, and some weeks I can get everyone down to muni.
