I am officially old.

Muscle relaxers and anti-inflamatory's plus 3-4 days off. Just be glad it only muscles. I'm 41 and had lower back surgery last year due to disc issues. I'm 100% now and have been for awhile. Don't take your back for granted!

Oh, and stretching only helps for the first 2-3 holes or if you take a long brake between 9 and 10 then stretch again.

A few years ago, I opened the kitchen "junk" drawer to get a pen. Just the act of looking to the back of the drawer, I felt an incredibly sharp pain in my back.
This happened 3 hours before a big tournament I had entered. The pain dropped me to my knees and I could barely stand up. There was no way I could play in the tourney and I called the course to find out if I could withdraw and get my entry fee back. They agreed and refunded my entry.
I couldn't play golf for almost 3 weeks. I do stretch a little more now since that event and not just for golf. I have found that if I stretch right after a real hot shower, it works real well for me.

OK here's one for ya'...

I once threw my back out...(wait for it)... getting out of bed.
I push the covers down, slide one leg out and when I slid the other out and started to sit up... WHAM! Like a knife went into my side and I slid off the bed and landed on my keister.
So there I am sitting on the floor in my skivvies thinking, "Now what?"

I sat there for a few minutes until my wife came upstairs and she helped me up and for a few hours I could hardly walk.
It eased up during the rest of the day but that was one experience I'd rather not repeat.

I am scheduled to see the Doctor tomorrow after work. My Internet medical degree tells me it's a simple muscle strain, albeit a painful one, but I guess I should get a second opinion from one of those fancy doctors who attended medical school.

There is definite improvement the more I move and keep it lose. However, getting in and out of my car today was probably a pretty funny scene. I had to roll down onto my knees to get out, and who knew brushing your teeth could cause your back to hurt? I will certainly never dismiss anyone complaining of back pain again.

I appreciate everyone sharing their stories. Misery loves company.

I injured my back weightlifting a few years back by dropping 450 lbs on it. Took me 2 weeks of doing nothing. I did stretches and low weight lifts to get it better.

If "misery loves company" you would adore me. Without the litany of injuries let me just say that my motto is "If you don't play hurt, you don't play"

Just don't rush it. Backs can take a while to come around.

I AM OLD. I have had several of the above problems. Trying to get out of bed, check. Bending over tying my shoelace, check. Getting off the couch, check. Usually just time and a hot bath (I may or may not use bath salts!) take care of the problems.

The only time that it lasted more than a day or so is the time I moved my mom's couch to clean. I had such pain! After 2 weeks I finally went to a chiropractor. He did wonders for me. I haven't had a back problem since! Just sore back muscles from hitting too many balls at the range.

I've felt much older than I am currently... I'm 33 but often feel like I'm 65. I understand your frustration with not feeling like you've done much but experiencing severe pain!

I marched Drum and Bugle corps for 4 years with a giant drum strapped to me while running miles on end for 4 summers of my life. That took who knows how many years off my life, and resulted in spasms, strains and pulls of my back. Last week while moving file cabinets at work I felt an odd pressure build up in my back. I get home, pick up my youngest daughter (2 yrs and maybe 25lbs) and almost drop her then drop to my knees in utter agony because of my back.

I've seen chiropractors, massage therapists, and back specialists. Nothing more than rest, adjustments, ice and ibuprofen for me apparently. Until I get to my late 40s and I need disk fusion or replacements. That's what they've told me. SUCKS! Today my back finally relented and I'm hopeful to play Thursday. It's been far too long now so we'll see. My Mizuno's are getting antsy!

Seems like a back problem can happen to almost any of us without much notice. I had an issue where I simply bent over about 30 degrees and dropped to my knees in pain. No other activity prior to the pain, no lifting, no twisting. It was scary! I was carried to a bed and hot towels applied to my lower back. Was up in about three hours, but still sore. Back to normal in 10 days.

This was a one time event, no others in the 12 years since the incident.

Big believer in stretching ...

Cheers

I've had back trouble since the mid 80's. I had to give up whitewater kayaking because one day of paddling resulted in one week of crippling pain in my lower back. Golf actually helps my back when it goes out. I almost always do some slight stretching to loosen up my back before the first swing of the round. The back issues keep me from doing much practicing too, but have almost never kept me from being able to play. Go figure.

I'm now dealing with another aging issue.... had to have my right knee scoped a week ago for a torn meniscus, and the doctor says I will need a new knee in the next 2 to 5 years. Just what I needed to hear...:surrender:

Looks like someone will be sleeping well tonight. Finally. The good doctor prescribed an anti-inflammatory for daily use and a muscle relaxer to help me sleep comfortably. She also prescribed some pain medication in the event I am having too much pain. I assume those will come in handy as I am sure to do to much too soon.

The great news is there is nothing seriously wrong with the back. It appears to be a run-of-the-mill muscle strain in one of the tiny muscles in the back that help keep everything else in order. I should be swinging the clubs within a week.

It is always the dumbest things! My friend, non golfer, split his knee in half because he slipped off of a curb. I have been battling tight muscles in my lower back, pelvis forever now and I have no idea what is going nor can doctors tell me. I think it is just stress. I find that 2 baths a day, or heating pad with ice following immediately eases the pain. Proper stretching and warm ups will help as well. Youtube some back stretches. I find a good one is to reach up as if you are climbing a rope and do this one hand at a time.

Edit, I just read your last post. Did the give you Flexeril? That just makes me sleep.

Did the give you Flexeril? That just makes me sleep.

Bingo. I was going to say no. They gave me Cycobenzaprine, and then I found out they were the same thing. It definitely helped me sleep.

Rest aside. There was definite improvement today. I am keeping my fingers crossed that I will be swinging the clubs next week. I got my test pilot pack from Vision Golf, so I am even more anxious to get after it.

The back is a funny thing. I have an issue where I cannot stay seated comfortably for more than 30 or so minutes. My legs start to ache, I get sore, tight and no one has been able to help me at all. I feel great when I move around and stay active, unfortunately my job involves sitting and I am only working part time for now, I cannot imagine working 40 hours a week. I use to sit for hours and hours, no issues, then about 1.5 years ago I just started getting intense pain. It feels like I am just sitting on bone. I felt better when I weighed 35 more pounds and did not move lol.

The only good thing about hearing about others back pains is that I know I'm not alone! Back pain sucks.

Ya know, its not the 3 scopes on my left knee meniscus from racquetball, the complete tear of the acl, pcl and other thing in my right knee from sand volleyball, the brain surgery after a softball accident, the tendinites in my left elbow, the cataract replacements Jan and March this year, OH NO !!!
its the darn sore back every day from that old mattress that my wife still loves that makes it tough to start my round every time!

I can't imagine your injuries if you competed in contact sports. It sounds like it's minor miracle that you are walking let alone playing to a single digit handicap. Are you Robocop or the $6 Million Dollar Man?

6yrs of H.S. hockey and never an injury. Well, I did get knocked out once skating with my head down, and I suppose a concussion might have been diagnosed. Couldnt tell my dad tho. He said if I got hurt he would take me out of the game. Still play Monday nights with a bunch of 30-40 yr old kids. Man am I slow. Dang kids can skate.
My 30 yr old son gave me a rainbow helmet to wear when we go out to play on the rink by his house.
It was him I was trying to spike the ball down on when my knee popped. He heard it on the other side of the net. I went straight down. That one hurt. Same thing Dante Culpepper did to his.
All is good tho. Knock on wood, I have healed well and other than my lower back from the stupid Temperpidic mattress, I am healthy.

I pulled a muscle in my back lifting not too long ago. I took a day off and took a lot of tylenol and advil. The pain killers let me play the following day. It usually takes about a week for the pain to go away completely though.

There is just nothing as bad as that dull ache that doesnt go away followed by the sharp pain when you try to take a divot or swing hard.
I wonder how many of us keep ibuprofen in our bags and even plan the round by taking some an hour in advance every round? I do.
