After a week that's felt pretty ho-hum at work, I finished it off with a bang this morning. Arrived at work and plugged my laptop into it's docking station at my desk. Hit the power button, it goes through the usual first couple screens then blanks before the dreaded message appears:

C:\Windows\System32\Config\System cannot be found or may be corrupted.

So, my hard drive is currently overnighting to IT in Dearborn to see if they can recover all my data and send back a new drive for me. If all goes well, I'll have it by Tuesday. In the meantime, I have a "loaner" laptop with none of my bookmarks, email addresses, files, etc.

Amazing how much the loss of a hard drive can cripple your capabilities nowadays...

Damn internet porn...does it everytime :D

External hard drives are a blessing. I keep all of my stuff on one. The OS is on the internal, as well as all my programs. But all documents, photos, etc. I keep on an external drive. (Yeah, the external can crash too). Good luck on the recovery of your stuff Osahar.

Always remember the magic word: Backup!

they're having a 2 for 1 sale on pocket protectors at Dollar General :D

Thanks, I need some! :clapp: :clapp: :clapp:

I had a hard drive crash on me once. It wasn't backed up. No fun at all.

yep...that rates pretty high on the suck-o-meter

Re: What a way to finish the week...

I feel your pain. I had that happen to me over the summer too. I haven't figured out the exact cause but I either pushed the space bar one too many times or it didn't like being launched off a 4-wheeler at 30mph and running into a rock. So much for being ruggedized. It took my work 2 months to replace it (the usual govenment pace).

Thank God all ouf work documents are on a server that gets backed up nightly. I need to back up my contacts and my bookmarks again!

Yeah, I'm kicking myself for not having that stuff backed up to either one of our server drives (although they frown on that) or to one of my thumb drives. Now I just have to pray that the tech up at the glass house are able to recover my stuff.

Guess what my first order of business upon getting the new HD back will be? :D

Just heard back from IT in Dearborn - seems that Fed Ex doesn't know what "Next Day" means and decided to deliver it today instead of Monday.

Bad news - the drive is DOA. They haven't been able to access it at all, so looks like I just lost ~ 2 1/2 years of emails, files, bookmarks, etc unless they get lucky now.

Note to self: Back up you files, idiot! :banghead:

RIP laptop hard drive. Sorry to hear of the loss. I hope that you can get back in the swing of things without all that history.

That is the best advertisement I have heard yet for cloud computing. I keep lots of documents, pics, etc. out on the net. I know those can crash as well, but I have yet to have that happen. I have lost several hard drives.

Agreed. Never mind the blessing/curse of being able to work from anywhere, much better than with logmein.

Too bad you don't have it in your possession. Putting it in a freezer can sometimes make a drive work long enough to remove the important stuff. I've seen it work several times and I've seen it not work several times.

I'm sorry Osahar. I have an external hard drive at work and everything backed up. Didn't make one bit of difference when the power went out all day yesterday and part of today. I felt like a kid telling the teacher that the dog ate my homework when I had to tell clients I couldn't get reports, etc. to them even though they were really done.
