305 Till I Die
One week ago today, I played the Wynn Golf Club in Las Vegas with two good friends of mine. We were in Vegas for our Fantasy Football draft (some how the wives were cool with that), and stayed at the Wynn hotel for the weekend. Now that my liver has fully recovered, I wanted to share my experience and pictures of this amazing golf course. And one more thing, playing golf with a hangover in dry heat is not a good idea... lol.
After we checked in and paid our "once-in-a-lifetime" green fees, we were escorted to the men's locker room which had a nice oakwood theme. There was only one locker with a name on it, and that was the late comedian Danny Gans. I'm guessing he was a member or regular there. We were advised that our caddy, John, was ready for us, and met him outside in the staging area. This was my first round of golf with a caddy so I was quite nervous as I wasn't really sure what to expect. He guided us to a hitting area to warm up, which was basically artificial turf with a screen 75 - 100 ft high and about 30-40 yards in front of you. So really no range there, but kinda understood since it's on the Strip. There was a short game area and putting green behind that screen, but we just wanted to get out to the first tee.
We played from the forward tees at 6,464 yards, and par was 70 (34-36). I won't go into details about every hole, but the first hole kinda caught me off guard. I guess Google Earth didn't do it justice as it was totally downhill from an elevated tee box. Despite the first tee jitters I hit my drive down the middle, and had a downhill lie with 165yds to the pin. My caddy recommended my 150 club (8 iron) which of course I hit thin and flew the green. This is just one of many examples where I rarely had a flat lie on the fairway or around the green, and that combined with a nice hangover was a struggle for the round. The elevated tee boxes especially on par 3's had my distances thrown off, too. It was an ugly front 9 47 (50+ for my friends) so we decided to pound some beers at the turn. Yeah, that only helped me with a 46 on the back... lol. I shot a 93 on probably the toughest course I've ever played, and despite some of the ugly shots we had a great time as our caddy, John, made it light-hearted and entertaining. My good friend, Ryan, also cracked us up as he ditched his rental golf shoes in the back 9 to play in socks (see last pic).
My first caddy experience was awkward & nerve-racking at first, but by the end I realized I can really get used to this pampering & confident advice. My 2nd shot on 18, I was undecided whether to hit 3H or 4i from 190 yds. Our caddy grabs the 3H, and says "I like it! Let's do this, Dan!". I'm thinking Hell yeah I'm gonna knock this on the green bro, and sure enough I did it. I thought that was really cool, and probably the closest I"ll ever get to experience a pro / caddy exchange.
Overall, it was a challenging, fantastic golf course, and despite the dry summer heat I thought the course was in great shape and the greens were very fast. The fairways were bordered with hundreds of trees, and quite narrow on most holes. There were a few dry spots on the fairways, but I think that's expected this time of year. Our caddy said in the winter the course is almost as good & difficult as Augusta National. Once we finished the round, our caddy handed to each one of us a gold plated bag tag with the Wynn GC logo and our names on the back. That was really cool.
Hope you guys enjoy the pics, and get to check out this course someday!!

We made it!! (I'm on the far right).
