  • Perhaps I didn't explain HOW I arrived at my shaft-head combo. It started with the Cleveland Ultralite observing I have low ball flight in general (so I needed a high launch shaft). I hated their Miyazaki light weight HIGH torque shaft. That led me to look for HI launch, LO torque. I found that I could hit Stiff shafts straight, but Regulars went farther. I also saw that the weight of the shaft didn't bother me as I tended to lead tape up my heads to promote draw anyway. Thus, I started looking for affordable LO torque, HI launch, Regular shafts where weight wasn't an issue. I found several good ones and most were a bit older, because the recent trend is towards LOW weight sacrificing torque. After trying a couple, the Z-Com TW74 was heads and tails the best for me. I bought about 6 very cheaply and installed the tip adaptors for Callaway, TMag, Ping, Titleist, and Nike in my preferred length so I could continue to test new heads. Been doing it about 2 years now.
BTW, I still play an Optiforce 440 with that same Fujikura Z-Com. It has bested the Big Bertha, Big Bertha Alpha, X2Hot, Adams, SLDR 12, Jetspeed and Ping i25 since last I wrote. I am testing the G30 right now.
I'm sorry if I only just noticed your message. I no longer post to THP as I have decided that they are not sufficiently objective in their equipment reviews. Instead, you can find more of my posts at Golfwrx.com or MyGolfspy.com

In answer to your question, my SS is about 105-108 so I should be using a "stiff". But I find I get more kick out of a regular. The problem with most regular shafts is that they are very light and very torquey. This is a result of their having fewer layers of carbon fiber to reduce their stiffness which also increases the torque. So I started looking for low-torque regulars. I consider "low" torque to be 3.0 or lower. 4.5 is pretty high.

You will probably have to sacrifice a bit of weight to get your lower torque. I doubt you will find a good one in weights from 50 to 60 grams. Aim for 70-80 grams. The Z-Com is an old shaft now and you'll only find it on Ebay. But Fujikura also makes some other new ones that have low torque.
    Hi Mark,

I'm very impressed/intrigued by two of your posts.
Mostly how the efforts you made to arrive at your shaft/driver combo.

About myself. My swing speed is 90-92. I noticed yours is about 98 or so, yet you still play Regular.
I currently use a UST Proforce Silver Regular since the torque is about 4.5 http://www.ustmamiya.com/golf-shafts/woods/proforce-vts-55
I hit my driver about 250-260 when I catch it well with a carry of about 225.
Average drive is probably about 210 carry, 235 overall.

Lately, I'm feeling I need something a little less torque. Basically, I'm wondering if a golfer like me would also benefit from the Fujikura Zcom TW74.Thanks in advance!
