The Safeway Classic begins this Friday at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club in Oregon. It's a 54 hole event (??). Every single member of the victorious U.S. Solheim Cup team is scheduled to play in the event, as are the majority of the players from the European team (Helen Alfredsson, Laura Davies, Sophie Gustafson, Maria Hjorth, Janice Moodie, Anna Nordqvist, Catriona Matthew, and Suzann Pettersen.)

Unfortunately, it's being broadcast on ESPN, so the video will suck.

Too bad, because Pumpkin Ridge is a beautiful course. It would really shine in HD.

Anyone know what the odds are on Michelle Wie getting her first professional win this week?

Lower than they were a week ago...hehe

My FIL invited me to go this Saturday, so we'll be there. It'll be a first for me - going to watch a pro tournament live. Should be a great one.

Are her parents running things again? If not, much better than if they are.

I feel for the Solheim players in this event.

Ummm, MP . . .:call-me:

How many replies do you suppose that tweet garnered?

What would you have given to have attended the Solheim after-party? Must have been a racous time.

Di Stewart interviewed Creamer and Pressel after it was all over and asked what the plans for the celebrations were. Creamer began to reply with "Get... erm... haha" then Pressel chipped in and bailed her out with something more politically correct. More laughing ensued.
I would say a... good time... was had by all in attendance :D

Hi folks - Spouse and I will be there this week - Don't be shy and say hello - I'll be the old bag wearing a white Long's Drugs Cap with tons of golf pins on it. I'll follow Dorothy Delasin at first, then likely join up with spouse and follow LO (his fav). I'll try to post a fan report here as my time permits.

speaking of post-game celebrations.....the best I've seen yet was after the Atlanta Olympics when they were showing all of the US athletes at the closing ceremony walking around with cans of Bud and Bud Light.....USA!

I saw 14/1 from one major offshore book. The Nevada sources will gladly rip you off at lower rate.

Hah! It was really just a rhetorical question, but I should have known you would come through with an actual answer to a betting question Awsi! :D

I was curious at those odds myself. On another site I mentioned on Sunday night that Michelle's odds would probably be chopped by 50% in her next event.

Here's a link, with the same quote, 14-1, although it's not the source I initially checked:

Arrived in Portland at 1pm or so. Beautiful sunshine - let's hope it stays that way. Nice (and unusual) to hear LPGA ads on the rental car radio - they could use a bit more signage, though. We've got a group to grab dinner with this evening, then Thursday we're off to watch some pro/am play. Hope to pop in here with a fan report or 2 once pro play is underway.

Weather has been great the past few days, with some light sprinkles yesterday morning. It'll hit 90* or so tomorrow, but will be perfect this weekend for the tournament. I'll be there Saturday - Pumpkin Ridge is only a few miles from my home.

FIFY.

And I've MET Ricey--this is based on actual knowledge.

Blog Life on Tour

"Wonder if this is some kind of Solheim curse? Wiesie is limping around with a taped left ankle and Paula did not look at all well today."

Lorena has a cold, and Inkster withdrew. :confused2:

Today was a real treat. We're just a 20 minute ride from the course, so we arrived by 8 or so. The usual group of eager-to-please teenagers managed the parking lot and shuttled fans to the course. Nothing appears to be scaled back here - all seems ready for tournament days - typical sponsor/vendor village, the huge Taste of Safeway Tent which houses 50 or so food reps that dole out free samples, and the 19th hole giving wine and beer samples. All good.

We dawdled at the practice area a bit, (I spoke briefly with Sonny Delasin - Dot was just practicing today, having no pro/am obligations. She's got a new Driver, so I'm hoping some of the kinks come out of her drives. ), then moved to the 1st hole to see 4 or 5 groups tee off and finally started our front 9 stroll with Lorena's group, plus 15 or so other fans. The front 9 is very walkable, just slightly hilly - a bit more so than Mission Hills. Lorena was paired with 4 men (average ability)who were sponored by Kraft and Safeway. We spoke with her briefly - getting assurances that she would be at the Long's/CVS in Sept - but she was battling a bad cold, and her play today showed it. Her driving distances in no way approached her usual output. Hope she gets some rest and feels better for the event.

At the turn, Spouse and I had lunch at the clubhouse. We sat outdoors with nice views of the practice putting areas and the 10th tee. Very fun. At one point, a friend joined us, sitting next to me. Spouse got the camera out to take our picture, but was more likely focused on Judy Rankin who sat behind us!

After lunch, I found a spot at 18 to watch the groups come in. Spouse caught up with Lorena's group and I met up with him as she finished her round. I lingered a bit and saw Michelle finish with about 15 or so fans walking along with her and ever present Mom and Dad.

We look forward to day 1, but it may be wet - ah, the Pacific Northwest!

No bozos spotted but I hope someone tells the starter how to pronounce Stacy P's last name.

More, as I can.

Too bad about Juli!

And good heavens--Thai names are long, but they pronounce as they look. No tricks there.

Yay Ricey!

Great report!

I just read that Paula Creamer withdrew due to illness. Same stomach problems she had last year. Bummer - I really wanted to see her!

She needs to get off the spicy food or something. She is withdrawing a lot it seems like this year.

Re: Creamer: At 8am or so today, Spouse and I were having breakfast in the clubhouse when an official approached the young player(and parents) seated next to us. The player was Pornanong Phatlum. The official told her that she had made it into the field and would be teeing off in place of Paula. Needless to say, they were elated and quickly scambled to register and warm up. She had a bit of an up and down round, but ended up at -1. We saw her again when she'd finished and congratulated her on a nice round.

Spouse and I parted after breakfast - me to the 1st hole to join up with Dorothy, Paige and Jimin Jeong - him to savor a bit more coffee before joining up with Lorena. 20 or so folks followed Dorothy's group - the largest number of fans supporting Paige. She played great as her scorecard reflects. She was having fun, and was fun to watch. Dorothy struggled again with club selection and accuracy and needed to turn her game around, but it just didn't happen today. I stayed at 18 to wait for Spouse. I was treated to witnessing a nice long putt by Michelle (lots of applause), and a frustrated outburst by Cristie after a muffed shot for bogey (Spouse thought a cell phone ring disracted her - when will people learn?)

A soft rain began at 2:30, so we and many more scrambled back to our cars, although there is much more golf to be played. We've a vol friend who's scheduled to work until 7 or so tonight - they've used him all day - he'll be one tired guy.

I had a chance at midday to speak to Mr. Wie. I just wanted to tell how that went. I approached him at 9 greenside, introduced myself, remarked on how well she played at Solheim, and asked if Michelle was planning to play in the CVS(nee Long's) in Sept. He was very nice. He appreciated the compliment, but said they'd not deceided yet. I was left with a much more favorable impression of him than I'd had. Ha - great minds think alike - Spouse asked Mrs. Wei as well, and got the same answer.

Ok - dinner now. Then I'll check on the times for tomorrow. There's little chance of rain. :act-up:

I FARKING HATE ESPN!!!!

Where is the LPGA coverage? Oh, it's on ESPN Classic, not on ESPN2 where every guide says it is supposed to be. Lucky I checked, because my DVR was recording the WNBA and a rain delayed little league game!! So I've missed 25% of today's coverage, and what is being shown is in some of the worst SD I've seen.

W.T.F!!!
