Long golf slacks with " V - notch " at hem

When I watch the pros on TV, some wear pants with a V shaped notch in the hem. What is the purpose of the notch ? Is it just fashion ? It seems to me like it may allow you to wear slightly longer slacks that cover more of your socks and the top part of your shoes to avoid the "high-water" look. I saw some Nike's at Golfsmith and they looked pretty sharp. Are the notches on pants exclusive to golf ?

You have seen such notches in non golf pants for years. I used to do it to all my jeans that weren't boot cut, so I could wear them with boots.

I think the intent of the v-cut is to allow the cuff of the pant to break forward and not look as bunched up on the top of the shoe. Just a cleaner look. My guess at least...

The V cut allows you to have extra drape and still look neat. But I do believe it has now become part of fashion

Both of the reasons here. It is definitely more function over fashion, but still plays a role in both.

    I do the same thing.

Cover more of the shoe, looks better (imo), and doesnt give you that bunched up look on top of the shoe.

I like the way pants with that look. I've wanted a pair for a while now. I just can't find a company that makes them in my size. I'm not exactly the tallest person on earth, so finding pants that I like that fit is troublesome at times. I've found a few European companies that will custom make the pants, but I would like to be able to at least try them on to make sure they are going to fit before I buy them.

I thought we had a thread (or part of a thread) about this last year talking about Sergio wearing these kinds of pants. Couldn't find it though.

I've been told by people who wear them that it's also partially for when they bend over for lining up putts, teeing up balls, taking putts out of the cup, etc. Without the slit, the constant bending over can wrinkle and mess up the bottoms of the pants, but with them added, it relieves that stress. That's what I've heard at least.

It lets the pants sit over the shoes better and not wrinkle

So would these slacks look inappropriate in an office or church setting ? Or just best on the golf course ?
