Putting fool looking for a makeover

Buck putting is like a personality. You just have to be comfortable and have a positive additude towards it. My putting used to be really bad then a friend told me to open up my stance to see the line a little better and the ball started to drop a more often , but i wouldnt take any insight from me cause my putting sucks

It is funny you say that though Ogs. My last 2 times out I have opened my stance a little and I'm averaging 5 less putts per round. I am starting to remember that back in the day I did have a bit of an open stance when putting. I feel like I can see the line better that way.

Have you tried a belly putter , I have noticed when guys are getting up there in age they seem to like them , I have one that i tinker with on occasion just have not put it in the bag yet due to looking funny

My Dad gave me some great tips on learning to read greens better. Here are a few:

1. Always read from both sides of the hole. Helps you with better perspective of the putt if you always get both angles.
2. If you have trouble reading the break, just imagine a bucket of water being dumped on the green right where the hole is. Where would it run to in relation to where your ball is?
3. Always remember that there is more break closer to the hole, particularly if you are a "die it in the hole" type of putter.
4. Amateurs (such as myself) always read too little break. Better to miss on the "pro" side of the hole than on the "joe" side. At least it will have had a chance to go in.
5. Same goes for distance. Better to miss past the hole than never get there. At least it had a chance to go in.
6. I like to use the alignment aid on my ball. I pick my line then pick a spot on the green right in front of my ball on that line. I line up the mark on my ball with that spot on the green, take a few steps back to check that I am on my line, and readjust if necessary. After that I never think of my line again. It is all distance from there.

Hope some of this helps! I am not a spectacular putter but I am not a bad one either.....I seldom 3 putt and average between 30-33 putts per round which is OK by me.

AWESOME thread Chunky.. I honestly have a very similar problem. I have a putting stroke that totally inconsistent, one day it feels SBST, the next it's an arc stroke. I have changed putters multiple times and I have no idea what else to do. I guess I will take a lot of the advice myself and check out some of the books such as Utley or Pelz (which I been dying to read for so long), or find someone to get lessons from.

I wish you the best luck in your putting journey and wish I could help!
I also to wish that I could be free for the THP Outing.. but the job calls ha ha!

I had posted this in another thread back in January: After playing for years W/O being fitted for a putter I took advantage of living down the street from Cleveland Golf Headquarters and spent an very informative hour in their fitting studio. Ruben the club fitting specialist had me make a series of putts with my current gamer exchange#7 and found out the putter was too long for me, I stand to far away from the ball and I was de-lofting/decelerating at impact. Ruben had me pick a few putters that caught my eye, no the Gambler's were not an option. After trying out several I felt the #6 mallet was the one for me. With the right specifications(33 inches 4* of loft midsize grip) I was no longer de-lofting or decelerating, the club face square @ impact & putter arc was consistent. I will never buy another club without being fitted.

Really?! So now you are calling me old?! I'm going to whip your butt when you come down here

I can honestly say that so far the Utley book is not doing it for me. The feel that I'm getting when I try his swing is very foreign to me and I can see when I'm on the course I revert quickly back to my sad stroke. I'm sure it does not help that I'm playing a 35" putter. Good luck to you to Weezy. Don't be afraid to post in this thread as you take that putter journey.

That is good advice TB. I really need to get fit. Glad you found your putter.

Chunky, did you ever email Seemore?

tapatalk: even available for lefties!

I never did get around to it TC. I sat down to write something up to them and the boys started going crazy over the DS. I will eventually though

Just checking. It helped me tremendously and Ted was very kind in taking his personal time in helping me and assisting me. It was well worth it.

I know the comment is late to the party but if you want to follow Utley, not all mallets are face balanced. I have a Nike one that is 1/4 face balanced which would probably let you get away with using a mallet with his method in theory.

I echo TC though, give the Seemore guys a shout.

Thank you Chunky I appreciate it! I can't wait to hear how the rest of your putter journey goes. I have tried to immulate differen't putting tips from coaches out of magazines, books, etc and I can't seem to do it either. I go right back to my old, original groove.. just makes me cringe after I stroke a putt and I know that I'm back to where I was! I have tried anywhere from a 33" to a 35".. and it's never pretty haha!

Have you ever been fit (or even static fit) for a putting stick? I have never been fit, so hopefully in the future I will find the chance to get professionally fitted.

I felt much the same as the OP when I returned from a recent trip to Myrtle. Drove the ball great, FW's and irons all good. Chipping was horrendous and putting somehow managed to be worse.

I came home, did some super-quick research then immediately ordered both Dave Stockton's Putt to Win DVD and Tom Watson's Lessons of a Lifetime DVD. While both offer such simple, seemingly obvious tips and instruction, it's delivered in a manner that's so very easy to comprehend and just as easily apply.

I've only gotten out a couple of times since then but so far, the results are revolutionary. For my putting, the key, as others have stated, has been finding a solid, comfortable pre-putt routine and sticking to it. Also, as Stockton stresses, I've learned to rely more on feel (as I did years ago). While I did make some minor technical adjustments, also encouraged by the Stockton DVD, most of the improvement comes from between the ears.

But the time to improve has to be devoted. I'm lucky to have a Big Moss in the house here so I practice for a bit everyday, putts and chips.

So the quest continues tomorrow with the arrival of the Seemore. I can't wait to begin the process of learning a new swing and becoming a little more natural with my stroke. Should be a lot of fun
