I've spent the past week playing with my new irons trying to get familiar with them before I go and play a round. I've shot close to 1000 balls on the range (my hands will testify to this) and I've run into a problem I haven't experienced before.

With my previous irons (Cobra FP's) I could hit 7, 8 & 9 accurately with no issues, 5 & 6 were mostly good only sometimes wandering from the intended path and 3 & 4 I was too inaccurate with to make them playable (they were the reason I got the hybrids).

Now I'm playing the R9's I'm shooting great with irons 4 - 7 but 8 & 9 are pretty much unreliable. I'm knocking balls all over the range with these clubs and I just can't get them to work no matter what I try.

Has anyone else had this happen? If so, how did you get yourself out of the funk?

When shots tend to go bad with my short irons I start to just take half swings and focus on ball striking. I know I'll lose distance but at least the control is there. Once I feel good about the control I'll begin to work back into 3/4 shots and ultimately full shots

Watch your foot work (that was my issue, my lower body wasn't quiet and led to my front foot flaring out and leading to pulls and hooks) and like hanks said throttle back and get back to a smooth swing, just because short irons are easier to hit doesn't mean you should swing harder.

I'm back on the range tonight (my hands will hate me) so will try the shorter swings and will take a video camera to check my feet and lower body. Thanks for the advice Hanks & lcsmrtn, got so frustrated with it this week!

+1, when Im off on the short shots shooting hosel rockets all over the place its cause Im moving too much lower body

I was warming up on the range one day while waiting on my coach for a lesson. I was hitting my 8 iron and was struggling. He walked by and all he said was shorten your swing. I started hitting them just fine after I did what he said.

Alex, Have you been through a proper fitting? Having gone through several fittings over the years along with being a long time player, I discovered long ago that as I move to shorter irons, I have to have each one bent a little to get the proper lie I need. Might be well worth your time, to find someone qualified in your area and have things checked out.

Thanks everyone, I really appreciate all the advice. Will let you all know how it goes at the range tonight.

The FP's were fitted (1" longer, 2 degree upright), but when I started the new irons process I had conflicting information from a couple of different places about whether or not I needed the new set fitted to me. I've got an appointment on Wednesday with a local fitting specialist so I'll see how things go.

The frustrating thing is that when I hit these irons right, they're fantastic. I'm just holding them back!

First I would have someone check the shaft flexes on the 8/9 irons to see if they are the same flex of the 4/7 irons and while they are have them check the lie angles also...You never know sets sometime have inconsistancys..At least you then can rule out club spec problems and you can go from there...Jim
