Fairway woods - what are you looking for when filling the top of your bag?

So since i'm in the morgan cup and i get 14 clubs (only play with 13 unless i have 2 putters) i have decided to get a fairway wood or 2 this year for the first time in my life. So i'm kinda dumb when it comes to what i should be looking for.... do i look for a fairway finder? something i can hit off the fairway well? or just try to fill a gap between my hybo and my driver. Being a long hitter has really been the reason i've never needed or bought a fairway wood. for example i hit my hybo 250 consistently off the fairway or longer off the tee if i need to. and its usually always straight or i can work my hybrid rather well either way. so if i need to hit a fairway or hit something shorter than a driver due to a hazard i hit the hybo.

Just curious what some other people think as i was talking about it with some other THPers via text and was interesting to hear what they look for and how they fill the top end of their bags. and with all the different options callaway has this year i think its made me think a lot more about it than i thought i would.

    driver-300 ish
    hybo-250 ish
    4 iron-220

so as you can see i could just try to fill the gap between 250 and 300 or whatever length i end up hitting my new driver once i get it. if you could try to realize i'm only gonna be getting Callaway clubs so those are my only options this year.

    i was thinking of doing

driver? still not sure what model i'm getting fitting is thursday but i know i'm getting a driver.
regular XHOT 15* 3 wood with a shaft that fits me
    maybe an 18* pro hybo
    then 4 iron and down.

Thanks for everyones imput really interested to see what everyone looks for in the top of their bags and what everyone thinks would be best for my top of my bag this year. i know i'm excited to have a fairway wood for the first time ever.

I need to have a 3wood that I'm comfortable with. I need to have consistency. I don't look at the one bomb. I look at easy it was to replicate acceptable results.

I would try and test a three wood and a four wood. It seems as though you would have plenty of speed to get a three wood off the ground, this will give you a nice driver alternative off the tee on shorter or tighter par fours.

What I'm looking for in a fairway wood is a club I can find the fairway with consistently. It'd be nice if I can hit it off the deck and if it's a bomber that's a bonus. I'm looking for a fairway finder that is 15+ yards further than my 3 hybrid.

I witnessed the power of a buckjob hybo off the tee's Saturday. I honestly thought it was a 3w until I saw you put it back in the bag.
I bet you could crush that 3w 265-275 which would fill that gap nicely. I'm thinking if you had a 3 wood on that par 5 that motoo hit your ball by accident you may of been able to reached the green in 2 instead of laying up.

I know you are not a Cobra staffer but check out Cobra's Fit 'n' Fly app. I think it would give you a good starting point on how to fill the gaps.

I like a fairway that gets a nice mid flight to it. As well as easy to hit off the deck.

For me, the 3w is for off the deck first, and so I want accuracy, height, and distance control. I can't really see one in that role for you given the distances stated.

About all I can think of is either pull a Phil and drop the driver if you find a 3 you can crush reasonably close to the same distance, or go with something you use primarily off the tee on doglegs or super tight holes.

My ideal set up would be very similar to the description of Phil Mickelson with the 3Deep: 3 wood off the tee that is long enough and consistent enough to cover most holes then the big dog for those rare occasions where a hole is particularly long or wide open.
In my 14 way lightweight bag:

    : R1 - B Asha, regular
Fairway Wood: G20 - TFC 169F shaft, stiff

Irons: RocketBladez, 6-SW, RocketFuel 85g shaft, stiff
Wedge: Vokey, 60*/4 - shaft, regular
    Putter: PCB Belly

Good thread Buck. I like everything from 5W down to be as close to automatic off the deck, for me, as possible. I may use a 5W or 7W from the rough, as long the lie is decent. 3W for me has to be easy to hit off the fairway (good lie, not downhill, in a divot, etc). It's most important role for me though is a driver alternative. I need something that is easy for me to keep straight and has a little roll out. Yardage is relative, but I generally try to split the 3W & 5W distance of course.

I tend to use my fw more of tee and stick with my hybrids off the deck. I'm hoping that changes with my new amps though.

I got my first fairway wood not to long ago, and it's replaced my driver off the tee. If I hit it good it goes 250, but it's farther and more accurate then my driver, used it off the deck once and had good results but mostly use the hybrid off the deck.
