Srixon Z-Star/Z-StarX vs. Titleist ProV1/ProV1x vs Taylormade Pentas

    Hey everyone,
So last year I played the Taylormade Pentas at a charity golf tournament and I thought they were great. But then after I bought a sleeve of Zstarx's and they seemed to perform just as well as the Taylormades and even like a ProV1. I guess my question is how do these balls compare and which is the best value to use?

I found the Penta to spin more and feel softer than the other two but it was the shorter out of the three. The Z Star was the most durable for me.
But I found a better ball thanks to a lot of THPers.

The BStone had better value per dozen (in Australia at least) than the ones you are asking about.

This is a very personal decision for each golfer. You have to play what works best for your game. You may want to see a ball fitting at your local Golftec. If that isn't possible and you just want opinions then I would say the Penta is the best bet. The new ball has hit the market for 2012 and the older models are on sale at most golf retailers.

For me I like the Penta TP5 best. The cover feels less clicky than does the Z-StarX cover for me and I spin the Pro-V1s too much.

I think the Srixon Z-Star and Z-Star X are the perfect balls with the exception of the clicky cover. I love how they feel on full and half shots.

Honestly I've tried nearly everything out there and just can't anything I like better than the Penta TP and now TP5 for me.

I do plan to test drive the TP3 soon though just because it is an itch that must be scratched, much like the Nike 20XI balls were last year.

Are you saying the new TP5 is equal to last years Penta TP?

No sir I am saying it is better. It really is softer as they claim. Not sure about longer as I can tell no noticeable difference there. But softer you can tell by dropping a few of each from around 125 yards and hitting them back to back. I have no clue why I am compelled to try the TP3 or any other ball, but I am.

I have been playing the pro v1X for quite some time now. I just got some Srixon Z Star XV's, it will be interesting to see how they compare!
Please chime in. I am interested in distance and lower spin on full shots compared to V1X. The better ball in the wind

this is the switch I made this year. They are very close IMO but I like the z star xv more off the tee and around the green. With iron shots I didn't see much difference.

Played with the Srixon Z Star XV Today. Immediately I feel a slightly firmer feel...not by much but tad firmer.
My drives are going very straight and definately equel to Prov v1x but I think longer. I hit some very long drives I feel I can swing fuller and more confident with this ball. Makes the Prov1 feel like a softer higher spinning lower compression ball.

Some awesome top notch iron shots, one on hole #2...a 5i 195y that was a med/high baby draw that tracked into the pin. This was probably the best looking shot of the last couple of months play with my 5i. I knew I had to get a extra 5-7y out of my 5i and the ball delivered a pro flight. It reminded me of the 2011 Nike 20Xi-x that they stopped making. Again the feel was firmer than Pro V1x and it flew alot straighter...or with slightly less spin. The divot was solid and no spin back or 3-4yrs roll fwd which is very little for a 5i baby draw on my Ping S55 / KBS Tour V 120x SS1x.

The next good shot was a 7i 170y and again it flew stronger and straighter than ProV1x or with less spin, any how it was tracking 'a lot' better to the pin. I usually hit a 7i 165 ish, so again on a full out swing the ball was begging to be hit hard and still preforming very very well!

Next was my Mitzy MPR 58*...flew straight landed near its divot by a foot...no spin back. Next a few more 'bombing drives' that were pushes and I am still in play in the right rough...they could have been worse.

I prefer this ball over Prov1x on full shots 'for sure'. My approach wedges and irons all seem to stop close to the divots without much back spin. One did on a green with a 145y 9i that the green was sloped back to me and I was surprised it did not spin back, actually it worked out better as I Bushnell lasered the yardage and was 3-4 past the hole, acceptable...made the putt. I can handle drop n stop with my yardages and not have to allow spin backs. Next week I will hit the Prov1x from there and see how far it get sucked back from the divot

Putting the ball was firmer, greens were sanded, so I can't really comment on this right now...

Pitching was good with not too much roll out, chipping was good too, but again sanded landings...cant call this yet

It was a hurried 9 holes at 4pm chasing the day light so will report back. I can say I like the full shots a lot better the ball feels more solid, fly's more stable and boring. I want to see it perform in wind. Overall I was impressed so far. If the greenside spin is acceptable, I think this might be my new ball

I just started playing the XV a couple week ago... The main reason was to get a yellow ball for winter,as the ProV1x is only in white... I really liked the ball, but Im looking forward to the 2015 ProV1x... I was able to get in on the prototype testing of this ball last year and was really impressed with it...I was getting 5-10 yds longer in a side by side comparison with a current V1x. Seemed like less driver side spin and about the same short iron spin...

Driver and full shots for sure. Find they spin similar around the greens, while the prov1x sounds a little more muted
