I couldn't disagree more. As a 15 handicapper, of the 14 par fours and fives on my course there are only 2 I can reach in regulation. I will always try to layup in the 40-60yd area. It's my 100% favourite distance for a 60 degree wedge and I can be pretty confident of being within 15ft 90%+ of the time and within 10ft 60% of the time and within 5ft 10% of the time. I play on a 6,800 yd course and hit a drive max 200 (avg 180) and yet sill consistently get round in 85-90.
Good course management is about putting the ball where you are most comfortable playing the next short regardless of the distance. I'm assuming you think it's bad course management only because your not very comfortable from that distance. You are two shots lower than me and possibly hit the ball a lot further than I do, so being 40 yds short to you would be a bad shot. Just remember yours is not the only way to play the game. The short hitters like me look at the game a different way.

I do not approve of this thread.I actually am working on this distance as we speak to get better. I am with Tadashi, I use to be upset when I was more than 15 feet away. I'm slowly trying to get that feeling back with some work.
I expect to be within 15, accept 20, and deal with whatever I get.
All my clubs are components that were forged at the best temperatures possible. They feel buttery soft and way better than all the rest.
I'm at this distance at least once per round, usually after I flubbed the previous shot. If I am, I just aim for the middle of the green.

Old coach of mine once said to me, "that if you miss or come up short on shots into the green, you had better be a damn good chipper!" The older I get, the wiser those words have become so I spend a lot of time working on that part of my game and usually I can get it to within 10-15 feet from 40 yards away. Now making those 10-15 footers to salvage a par is another story.
Where I'm at with my game if I miss a GIR and I'm in this range I play safe and try to make at worst a bogey. I need to eliminate blow up holes by trying to get too cute. Middle of the green is a safe bet unless there is nothing between me and the flag

Had this shot several times yesterday and 15' and was the magic number. Almost jugged one on #4 but ended up 12' past.
