What clubs do you use for round green in patchy grass?

Due to living in Scotland and the weather being poor at the best of times there are many areas on the course usually round the green where the grass is so patchy and your almost playing off the dirt. The lie is very tight and i'm never sure on what club to play, i'm talking about anything from 20 yards in. If i go for the wedge i hit it fat as it sinks in to the mud or if i play sat a P wedge for a bump and run i hit it thin. Any ideas? Also when its really wet on the course do you guys still hit down on the ball or try to pick it? When i seem to hit down the club just gets caught up in the ground and slows it down so much resulting in fat shots.

20 yards in is bump and run territory on that type of lie... 6i if it's dirt... now, if it's mud, you really have to get under it just right, and I can't help you much there.

Can you putt? Hybrid? I use midiron but I get stabby at the ball and have to be careful not to rocket the ball too far past the pin.

I'd use my 49° GW, which is probably what I'd use if the grass was decent as well. Just get that ball first and the ground doesn't matter.

From that distance I use my 56 and play it like a putter with the same grip for putting aswell. I lean the shaft forward to adjust how much height and run I want. With this technique I mainly aim to sweep the ball as you would do with a putter. Works well for me and means I don't hit fat or thin chips close to the green. Anything from 40-60 yard ends up being more of small swing do with me hitting the ball and taking a small divot.

For me it all depends on what's in front of me. If I have to clear a bunker I go with a quarter swing with my 56 degreee wedge. Pretty flat i'm using a bump and run with either a PW or GW depending on the firmness of the greens.
