So i'm dealing with some issues with my daughter now thats wearing on me mentally. Have any of you dealt with sinus type issues that wouldnt seem to go away with your child? She started with a wet cough that you could just hear all the congestion in her and snot in her nose and always clearing her throat. So the dr gave her some singulair and allergy meds and we tried that .. didnt do much . So he ordered chest and head xrays then after the head xray he said it was a sinus infection. So he gave her a script for antibiotics which seemed to have her cleared up. When i came back from Seattle she no longer had the snot, still had a cough every now and then but it was dry and seemed to be over it. Then started coughing at night again and the dr said it may take another round of the meds so now the 2nd week in and it seems like its getting back to there it was with the congested sounding cough. she is never without energy or feeling bad and always upbeat and happy so thats good at least. Just curious if anyone else has dealt with this type of stuff with their child and what route they took to resolve it.

It's tough to say dude, but I know it's frustrating.

We mainly had ear infection issues and at one point went through almost 6 weeks of different treatments before they gave him this rotten shot that finally cleared it up. It was really just terrible and I cringe thinking about it.

Dr just called and referred us to an allergy specialist hopefully that gets us somewhere.

Hope she gets it kicked soon!

me too man i get frustrated with the Dr's though sometimes i feel they just throw darts and hope something cures it.

i really think its something in the house causing it. i have horrible allergies too and something in our bedroom causes me to sneeze and get stuffy every night. every morning i wake up with a stuffy nose but soon as i get out of the house it clears right up. so maybe i should burn the house down and build a new one lol . not sure what it oculd be though its a brand new house that we have cleaned every two weeks.

Yea, it's not always a cut/dried thing like we want it to be and can definitely get frustrating. Maybe it's mold or something? Is there a way you can have a house screened for that?

9 times out of 10 it is some sort of allergy. I've never had allergies in my life then in the last year or so I had the same type of cough. I felt fine, but just had the nagging cough. Went to the doctor and he had me take an Allegra every day and after about a week or two it cleared up completely. Then when I felt that I didn't need to take them anymore (they are expensive), I stopped and the cough came back. Went back to the doctor thinking there might be something more to it. He basically slapped me across the head (not really, but I think he wanted to) and said to take the Allegra every day and I won't cough. I take one nearly everyday and don't cough anymore. 2 of my kids have allergies and they cough so we try and get them to take something every day and it usually does the trick.

I guess my point is that from my experience, it isn't something that changes with the weather or time of year. Some of them are just so much into our bodies that you have to stay on top of it every day and it controls it. When you stop, they come back.

I'm no doctor so I have no idea what is really going on with your daughter, but in my experience and that of my family, some of them are kind of weird and you just need to stay on it for the cough to go away.

If that doesn't get the results you want then start looking for a really good ENT (Ears, Nose & Throat) Specialist. Being in Katy/Houston you should have some really good ones, esp. at Children's. They can do a ton of stuff to really look at what's going on with her.

Has she done allergy testing yet (the skin test?)

New houses are full of chemicals used in the manufacture of building materials, such as in glues, in plywood, carpeting, drywall, paint, pest prevention, etc. Try airing the house everytime the weather is clear and nice.

Do you use those plug-in air fresheners? They cause a plethora of issues from sinusitis to migraines. I removed the one from my room at my sMom's because it was killing me. Something to do with the chemicals used to make the pretty smell and then the conversion when heat is applied (calling JR).

She refuses to eliminate them from the rest of the house... Thankfully the worst is when they are new and really spitting the scent out strongly.

^^^^^this is what I would recommend. She may need stints installed until it clears up.

Nate... texas childrens is where we went for the xrays but havent went the ENT route yet and no she hasnt done the skin test im sure thats going to happen on this visit though . I may join her as ive never done it either.

Sorry to hear this, seem's like these issues are happening more and more these days. Two of my grand kids have had some issues as well. We started using the allergy specific air filters for our central air unit in the house and it's really made a huge difference.

you know what actually we do i will take those out when i get home see if that helps at all.. i actually have one in the bedroom as well i think maybe that could be why the bedroom causes me so many issues ..

Everyone living in Texas should do the skin test to know what things and seasons they are affected by (if any). Start asking around about ENT's in Houston and I bet the same name will start popping up to you.

yea i buy the 20 dollar filters with the highest rating and change them often

We just finished a bout of this going through the whole house. Our tests came back as virus. So no antibiotics, just had to let the body fight it. It lingered for what seemed like forever. Eventually it was gone.

It is rough listening to the little ones suffer like that - especially the coughing at night. This may be one where you just have to grit your teeth and get through it the hard way.

yea the only good thing about it is she doesnt feel bad or anything like that

How old? Sinus infections can be very stubborn. Allergies and sinus problems can result in infections and it becomes hard to distinguish where one ends and the other begins. If she has bad, meaning constantly inflamed, full of polyps, etc... It will never completely end, just wax and wane cyclically.

Evening coughing is a common symptom, caused by a constant drip even though congestion seems light. She may also find presence of clear fluid, like water, not congestion. it is simply condensation trapped in the sinuses.

Sounds awful I know and if sinuses its a constant nuisance. Good news is that It can be treated and trust me, it is a great thing to have sinus troubles identified and treatment tailored accordingly.

May just be allergies, but take her to an otolaryngologist. GPs and Allergists usually completely overlook simple sinus issues. And yet that may be more common than basic allergies. Don't waste time. A simple CT scan will tell the whole story. If it is sinuses, treating it will make more of a difference for her than either of you can imagine.

Good luck.

she will be 4 in october. we went to the allergy specialist last week well my wife and her did. she has alot of inflamation in her nose and throat so we are treating with a few things now to see if it goes away . from there she said depending on the outcome we may go with a 21 day antibiotic route and a skin test.then if needed she would send us to a pediatric ENT which may result in tonsils getting removed.

While it's not my child I can speak from personal experiences. I've always had really bad allergies as well as bad ear infections and sinus infections.

I went 3 weeks battling a sinus infection, and each time like your daughter it seemed like it was going to clear up and be fine, but then it would come back. My ENT doctor suggested trying to go hard at it with a combination of Mucinex/Sudafed, and a saline nasal spray while on the anti-biotics. This ended up working great for me as it essentially got rid of the congestion while also treating the infection. Now anytime I get a sinus infection, I always pick up some mucinex and saline nasal spray along with my anti-biotics and I've never had one last longer than a week.

I've also had 3 sinus surgeries to fix a hole in my sinus that would allow the infection to leave my sinuses only to re-enter where the hole was. I really hope that's not the case for your daughter, as it's a very painful afterwards and just unpleasant to deal with.

While my wife and i were living in Bismarck, ND she would get sinus infections that would put her in the hospital. Bismarck is very humid because of the Missouri River. Her ENT reccomended surgery. We moved to Gillette, WY in November. It's very dry here. Since we've moved she hasn't had a problem and never had the surgery. I'm not sure the reason but i'm guessing it's the dry air.

When my daughter was 4-6 years old, she had that sort of hacking cough for months at a time. We had allergy testing done, tried various medications...nothing. Some things helped her sleep, but didn't help with the actual cough. The only thing that helped was a humidifier in her room (added bonus - the noise it made actually seemed to help her sleep. Kids is odd.).
On the plus side, as little help as it may be, at about 6.5 years she just...stopped coughing. No changes in the surroundings we can think of, didn't change bedding, paint, air fresheners, food...she just seemed to get over it.

We have dealt with this with all of our kids to some extent, but my oldest daughter has had the most issues. From age 1 to about 8 we basically rebuilt her from the neck up. Four sets of tubes and adenoids, tonsils, and sinus surgery. She has very bad allergies, and we had her on allergy drops until the insurance quit covering them. They consider them an "experimental" method, even though they have a great record in Europe and been over her for years. We got away from the allergy treatment and over time the sinus issues returned. A month or so ago we took her in when the congestion was very bad, and the ENT said there was an infection and possible blockage again. This meant possible surgery again, which she said was a probability after the first one. She put her on an antibiotic and a irrigation process and allergy spray to try and clear it and reasses in a few weeks. The results were immediately positive, and the CT scan indicated there was not a blockage. Now we need to find a good allergist and get on a shot program. With kids a good ENT is worth their weight in gold. Being proactive on the allergy front, will help with a lot of the chronic issues if they are severe, especially if the are outdoors a lot. The irrigation, spray, and if necessary shots really make a difference, especially in the spring and fall.
