    R.I.P. Aldila RIP shaft

I got the R1 as a birthday gift a few weeks back with the stock Aldila Phenom 55 g stiff... more like a wet noodle than anything else. The sound was horrible from this driver head IMO, but the ball really goes!

I have played a retail Aldila RIP Alpha 70 XX for around 2 years, my gamer shaft. I pulled the R11 tip from the gamer myself, swapped it with an R1 tip from Dallas Golf and a few days later I made the trip down to Sellingers Power Golf in Roanoke for last bits of my planned overhaul. Last step in the plan was to have them hot melt the head to dull the sound. They added 2g to the inside center of the crown.

My gamer shaft finally gave up the ghost after around 20 swings. 298 average with a handful out to 315. I had pulled it 3 times before this, and bought it as a pull, so I guess it's had a full life as shafts go.

Absolutely gutted me seeing that shaft break. Since there is only one way to cure this ill... on its way from the tour van is an Aldila RIP Phenom 70 Tour X NL. Any experience with this shaft folks?

Interesting. My son has had 2 RIP shafts fail at the same point. I thought it was just him, now I wonder if those shafts are prone to failure there.

I've played the RIP Alpha actual versions. Not made for and have never had a single issue.

I play the RIP ALPHA 60 in my J40 445 and I really do enjoy it. I like the lighter shaft and the control I feel like I have. I think you're really gonna like the phenom.

The shaft is the one in my sig, not a made for TM. Its a retail one that I bought a few years ago and have transferred into each of my drivers since. Your point is good for either a retail or made for shaft though... I wonder what Aldila might say about it?

I'm starting to feel a bit better about it now a few days later. This was legitimately the only way I would ever have changed that shaft anyways! ;)

You mentioned you've had this particular shaft in a few drivers.

With that being said. Have you pulled the shaft using heat or have you changed the TM tip?

If so that could be the culprit.

I apologize for not reading your original post more carefully. Got my answer there.

Did you use heat when you pulled the tip

Aah no worries - I also edited it to be a bit more clear. Yep, heat all sides with a propane torch and steady pulling. I have pulled a fair amount of graphite shafts, probably 20 or so without any issue, I normally do most of my own clubwork. This one I am told may have been weakened because it has gone through numerous pulls.

I would say the heat finally did it in.

    Good luck with the NL.

I've had two Aldila R.I.P. Beta shafts break on me in the past two years. Won the R9 460 in a closest to pin contest, so at least I didn't pay for it - but the first shaft snapped after hitting about 20 range balls. The 2nd one busted about a year or so later on the range after some odd behavior. Made me feel terrible cause my buddy was taking the club for a test drive, and the head just basically flew off - it wasn't his fault I don't think. As a result - no more of those shafts for me.

I guess I should be glad though, cause that breakage led me to buy a barely used R11S end of last year, and its probably the most consistent driver I've hit.

Did they all break where the shaft meets the club?

Did Bryan , over at Sellinger's, fix you up at you up in the X NL,? Also, is the shaft being sent to you or to their shop? Bryan was the one who did my wedge fitting Monday. He really seems to know his equipment.
