I recently played the famous links course with my regular fourball. It was a gift for my uncles birthday and as we usual play together he invited me to play. I jumped at the chance to play this course as I had visited the course to watch the Irish Open Wednesday pro-am. I have only been playing two years and thought that I wouldn't have the chance to play such a prestigious course so soon, and I was even more surprised that I hit four pars on the front nine, and a bogey on the hardest hole on the course, not bad considering that as a 21 hcap i was not supposed to be allowed to play the course (18 hcap limit). Unfortunately, all of that was on the front nine, I lost my concentration on the back nine and did not end up with a great score.
Anyhow, back to the review.
The staff were all very friendly even though we were slightly late for the tee time due to traffic. The pro shop is well equipped and reasonably priced. We played off the medal white tees.
The first hole is a 382 yard par 4. It is a fairly easy tee shot with a large fairway. there is no need for a driver here for the big hitters. I hit a three iron to the middle of the fairway.
The challenge of this hole is the green. it is a raised green that slopes from the back to the front. It is guarded by a steep bank to the left with a bunker at the bottom and another bunker at the front for those coming up short. The temptation is to bail to the right of the green (which I did) but this leaves a tricky putt or chip on fast greens.
