A little background. Pretty much this entire season starting back in March, I have been dealing with some discomfort in my right hand while playing golf. It had been mild, and I attributed it to arthritis, which i self diagnosed but since it runs in my family, and i am getting older, i just figured it was something i might as well get used to. Took an advil before i played, rubbed a little icyhot on it, and ended up getting grips that were a little more friendly towards it. It was manageable, really only was uncomfortable able i played, but during a round for the most part i forgot about it.

Fast forward to late October. I had just gotten over a back injury, got some new irons, very excited about trying them out, and headed to the driving range. Things were going great. Completely pain free, striking the ball better than I ever have. After about about 50 swings, I decided that I shouldn't forget my woods and pull out the driver. First swing, club connects with the ball, and it takes everything i have not to immediately drop the club. An intense pain on the top right side of my right hand (I'm a right handed golfer, so my bottom hand on my grip). The pain radiated a little up through the center of my wrist, and almost out to the sides, but the intensity was in my hand. After a few minutes, I realize the pain is not going away, i give the balls to the guy next to me and head home figuring i just need to give it some rest.

Two weeks later, still really not much better, and depending on certain motions, i could recreate some of that initial pain. So I decided to bite the bullet and go to our family physician. Turns out, the day of my appointment he was sick, so i saw another guy in the practice who i didn't know, but basically gave me a prescription for some extra strength advil and suggested it would go away in a couple weeks, and if not, i should see an orthopedist. Maybe 10 days later, the pain is pretty much gone in my normal day to day activities, and i decide to try to go to my golftec lesson which I had cancelled a few times already. After 4-5 swings, pain is back to the same degree as when i first hurt it. I decide to make an appointment with an orthopedist.

I meet with the orthopedist before thanksgiving, he takes some xrays which don't show anything broken. He wasn't very definitive, said i probably just had a strained tendon. He did say looking at my xray, that i did not have arthritis. He prescribes me a gel which is basically like topical advil he explained that should relieve the discomfort. I've used it, but honestly not sure it really made much of a difference. I complete shut down golf for the last month, have taken it extremely easy, though had has occasionally bothered my while just sitting at my desk or on the couch watching a movie with the wifey. I would say overall though, over the course of the past month, it has gotten gradually better, to the point last night i did something stupid...

So last night, after just a long day of work, i decided to hit the gym and on the way there decided to hit some golf balls at a heated driving range. I just bought a small bucket, and decided to really take it easy, but i've just been chomping at the bit to hit some balls. I hit about 25 balls with mild discomfort, but really nothign i haven't dealt with all season. Decide to switch over to my 3 wood, and after about 5 swings, hand really started hurting again, intense pain at or above the level when i initially hurt my hand. To the point i decide to stop and left the balls there again.

So here I am, wondering if I'm just being completely impatient and need to suck it up and go a couple months before i swing a club again? Or, is it possible that there's another possible diagnosis and rest isn't really going to end up solving anything? I've played sports all my life, had all types of injuries. I've never encounter one that came back so quickly after what i'd consider a fair amount of rest, and really the symptoms are not any better than they were 2 months ago. As much as I will hate giving it a couple more months off, if i was certain that would do it, then i'd do it. But biggest fear is that i go 3 months without doing anything, head back to the range, and it's the same, and then i'm looking at possible missing out on part or all of the '14 season.

So after all this long windedness, really two questions. One, has anyone had an injury like this from golf? And two, do you think i should make another appointment with my orthepedist, or just rest it based off his initial diagnosis and give it another x weeks/months? picture below to show where the pain i centered, and how it radiates:

I went through something similar to this last year. It was rough. Pain throughout the top of my hand. Switching to graphite shafts helped reduce a lot of the pain, but what helped the most was time off. It stunk/stinks, but when I returned to the course, with the graphite shafts, I felt much better. In the meantime, I focused on my putting.

Question for you. Do you spend a lot of time at the computer and/or play video games? Have you thought it could play a role? Just curious more than anything as someone that spends a lot of time typing and knowing what it does to my body.

I've been fighting right wrist/hand pain for the past couple of months. I had the same issue, no damage, doctor said it was probably a strained tendon. The problem is that it hasn't gotten better, no matter how much rest I take. I tried a soft wrist/hand support with no luck, so now I have to tape my wrist fairly tightly before I play, or the first shot will remind me to. By taking the pressure off the wrist, I don't get the pain in my hand unless I hit a fat/toed shot.

I don't know what it is, or why it won't go away but it has seriously affected my game recently.

Like JB said, I spend a lot of time behind the computer typing at work, which may be causing the problems and the pain during golf is just a by-product.

I do spend alot of time at a computer for work. I don't really play games anymore, in my 20's maybe, but not since i've had kids. How long did you take off with the injury? Did the graphite shafts help because they were lighter, or is it more to do with a softening of the impact?

I do liek the putting idea...it will help with my addiction, and maybe i'll be a better scoring golfer when i get back :)

that was kind of why I took the shot last night. I bought a brace for my wrist (wristwidget?) and though maybe that even though to me it felt like the pain was eminating from my hand, maybe it was a by-product of a wrist pain, and supporting it would help solve the issue. If I discovered one thing last night, it's that the pain is 100% in my hand, and the wrist pain is the by-product of it.

I took close to 2 months off. I did not stay away from THP, but no golf at all. Read and conversed a lot about clubs and stuff, but no swings at all. It helped me a lot. I still take two advil before playing just in case it is a swelling issue and that seems to help as well.

Graphite has made all the difference for me. The impact is completely different and it changed my perspective about playing years from now.

It is actually worse to damage ligaments and tendons than it is to break a bone as they take far far longer to heal and sometime won't heal to allow the same level of 'performance' as you had before the injury - been there, done that, got the T-shirt.....

If a consultant has said there is no evidence of breaks or arthritis then that only really leaves ligament/tendon problems so maybe it would be worth getting the opinion of a physiotherapist if that is an option?

I will second this. I have had the same kind of pain you describe above for years. The Alleve before and after rounds got really old quickly. Switched to graphite last year and the pain as virtually disappeared. So much less abrasive on those areas. I really strongly recommend rest until it doesnt hurt on a daily basis. Once you are pain free for a few weeks swing some graphite shafts.

yes, this forum has been the only reason i've been able to keep my sanity for the last month. Every time i got the urge to hit the range, i checked the forum instead...just got week last night. Think I'll give it through Valentine's day and see where I'm at....which incidentally coincides with the day i'm probably going to get the biggest urge to go to Golf Galaxy and test out the Bertha :).

And thanks guys, it oddly makes me feel better to know this isn't some rare mythical injury. I googled all over the place and kept getting sites that said 97% of hand/wrist injuries are on the left hand and really couldn't find anything that describes what i was dealing with.

I'm no doctor, so don't take my 2 cents as the full picture, but if you do have a tendon issue - those things take forever to truly heal. They're not like muscles that receive copious amounts of blood every moment. If I'm not mistaken tendinitis means you disrupt the flow of blood to the tendon which is very limited to begin with. Speaking with several doctors in the past about injuries, they make it sound like whatever time your body usually takes to heal from a muscle injury, take that time and multiply it by 3 to 5. It takes a long time. And as JB said, if you do keying or lots of things that require the dexterity of your hands, it may take even longer.

Hate to be downer, but this has been my experience. Definitely keep pushing the doctors for answers and help. And listen to your body. Good luck

I'm with JB. I spend a lot of time at the computer for work and had the same issue in the spring. I am switching to graphite with my new irons, but the two months I was away from golf this spring/summer really helped the pain.

Man it is rough. The good news is that if you are planning a THP event for 2014, it gives you something to look forward to and heal properly because you want to be healthy for it.

I have a very similar issue that has not changed in over two years now. Right hand pain mostly generated in a u-shape around my thump and index finger down into the base of my hand. At times the pain seems to spread down into the wrist and almost always effects the fatty section (Pad) of my palm below the thumb. I've tried just about everything except go to a specialist, (No insurance), so I've just dealt with the pain. I personally think it more of a carpal tunnel type issue and something I will simply have to except. Some day I hope to try ghrapite shafts, but thats not in the cards near future.

Ocean City is marked on the calendar, just waiting for signups!

p.s. I'll pull a Willis Reed if I have to for THPMC or #theking :)...but i'm thinking I'll be good regardless before March.

well just to follow up on this, yesterday I went to the Orthopedist again, and he gave me an injection of Cortisone into my hand. He said it would take 3-10 days to really take effect, and recommended I give it 4 weeks before I slowly ease back into golf (he recommended a week or two of just chipping...which is probably exactly what my game needs anyway). Anyway, and maybe it's in my head, but 24 hours later my hand already feels better. When I roll my fingers, i don't hear the snapping/cracking I was, and really very little pain. Very excited about the long term prognosis.

I play with constant pain in my hand, or my wrist to be more specific. I have to pop a couple of ibuprofen before each round to help. Started years ago with a big old heave out of the rough with a 3 wood, totally mistiming and hitting the ground first. It was then made worse with my first lesson after a shank attack. The pro diagnosed I had a poor release and got me to over exaggerate the release with my hands. A few weeks of this and my wrist was in tatters. I now play with little hand action, and the pain is manageable, plus I'm fairly accurate and don't lose distance against most I play against. I have a feeling it's carpal tunnel I have.

you know, that's funny, that's similar to when it happened to me. My last lesson we were working on keeping my right hand stiffer because i had too much wrist hinge, and basically over exaggerating it on my backswing. A couple sessions at the range later and that's when i hurt it.

gave up golf early this year because of a sprained ankle. About the same time an area just below my left thumb started hurting. I am hoping some rest over the winter will help.

I've hurt my wrist with this snappy pre-shot routine thing I do. Ruins the round & takes a couple days to heal until I can play again (I have since tried to stop doing that). More importantly, I have developed a golf related hand injury that really has bothered me for the past 6 months or so - the index finger on my left hand. In analyzing my grip, seems a good portion of the force of my downswing is focused on this finger. It got so bad, I subsequently had to change from the overlap to the interlock grip, leaving the index finger outstretched & not in contact with the grip ... involved quite a learning curve, but I finally have adapted to it & the finger is slightly better - as the OP says ... it probably just takes ALOT of time to heal (I play a lot of golf which doesn't help). From reading all the stories of others with hand issues, golf must just be tough on the hands ...
