The battle was ripped from a Rocky movie as Phil Mickelson and Henrik Stenson dueled down the stretch of Royal Troon. Far ahead of the field, it was as if it was matchplay and neither played looked human. Then on the 16th hole, holding a 1 shot lead, Stenson dropped a 50 foot putt for birdie and moved the lead to 2.
The players continued to battle with birdies on 16, but when the final putt dropped on the 18th hole, Henrik Stenson won his first major at the 2016 Open Championship. He is the first male major championship winner from Sweden and did it at the ripe age of 40. This win tied Jason Day’s record score of -20 and fired a final round 63.
