TaylorMade first announced their TP5 and TP5x golf balls back in December 2016 as they geared up for the 2017 season. This ball line certainly generated plenty of attention as it was a five-piece construction instead of the three and four-piece balls that tend to find their way on tour. Since that day, they have been working on perfecting this golf ball, and today TaylorMade announce the 3rd generation of what they call the “most complete tour ball.”
TaylorMade already had a respected product with the TP5 line, however they made some changes to tweak its performance in 2019. What they did that year was build upon the first generation ball by improving spin, durability, and speed. Speed being the most significant update as the TP5 had shown to be good at handling spin off the driver and providing plenty of control on approach shots. By introducing a material known as High Flex Modulos(HFM) and creating a new Speed Layer System, TaylorMade was able to stiffen up layers within, but with a material that provides more spring back, thus creating more speed. They also took strides to make the cover more durable as part of their Dual Spin Cover. All in all, the refinements that took place in 2019 helped make the TP5 another impressive option.
The fine tuning continues here for the 2021 TaylorMade TP5. No, this version is not going to be a brand new, completely changed from inside out golf ball. Instead, TaylorMade is building upon the success of the previous two generations. This time around the main focus is placed on improved aerodynamics. With a new Seamless Tour Flight dimple pattern, players should expect to see more consistency in their ball flight. To go along with consistency, this generation of the TP5 will achieve its peak height deeper in its ball flight thanks to shallower dimples. But not all of the dimples have been shallowed, there are also a mix of steeper dimples which will help maintain lift as the ball descents towards the target. This is going to help lead to longer carry and a sharper decent.
Also to note is that the TP5x is getting a cover upgrade. TP5x has always felt like the firmer or more solid golf ball and now it’s getting a softer urethane cover. This cover is going to help grip the grooves a bit more and generate some extra spin. On top of that, it’s going to help give a slightly softer feel than previous version.
TaylorMade continues to improve upon the “the most complete tour ball.” After coming out of the gates strong for 2017, they upped the ball speed in 2019, and now have worked on ball flight consistency by improving the aerodynamics. Will the 2021 TaylorMade TP5 or TP5x be a ball on your demo list for this season?

Color: TP5 White & Yellow
TP5x White & Yellow
I still like the new ProV offerings, and have been playing the V1x some, but I think this TP5x has changed just enough to work for me. I’m gonna order a 4 for 3 and call it good. TP5 is out.
Oh, and today is finally April 9th. So go get your yellows y’all.
Yep. First place I spotted the 3 + 1 for them, and where I ordered mine.
Anyone seen those in stores? I’ve seen just about every other brand/model 3 +1 that’s doing it, but no blue boxes.
I was at the PGATSS on Saturday (Walked in and out and didn’t buy anything!) and it looked like Chrome Soft is coming in a 4 dozen "Boxes"
Bridgestone is doing 3 Dozen Boxes.
Yeah, most of the balls are in those boxes (3 + 1 free) this year. The Titleist ones are everywhere. I hadn’t seen any TP5/x though. Hadn’t seen much of the TP5 balls in general outside of the two places that get everything really early here.
Just clarifying… You haven’t seen any TP 3+1 in yellow, have you? I have looked everywhere to no avail.
Also, the TaylorMade website is now saying the TP5X in yellow is unavailable until late June. Those who want it in yellow had better grab some in retail stores while they remain in stock.
Whaaat in the… ?? How can they be out of balls already? This is ridiculous.
And no, I haven’t. But ya know what, I’ll look later today. I haven’t done much golf shopping lately. Good excuse.
So are the pix out yet too, ’cause I hadn’t really thought about them, but they’ve been out on the piles for a while here.
This place has about 5 boxes of the TP5x yellow, lots of TP5 yellow, and lots of the new pix.
I went into my local store at lunch and they had 4 boxes of TP5x yellow. It appears more and more that there is a supply chain issue and limited quantities currently. I doubt that there will be a buy 3 get one promotion, so I just bought 3 of the 4 boxes. I am set for quite a while.
So just to verify…..2019 on the left, and 2021 on the right correct?
Correct
Thanks….I like how the ’21 played for me. It’s a night and day difference for me between the two. I will stock up on some ’21’s and figure out what to do with the the few dozen ’19’s that I have.
And then I must have missed the pretty colors, because I switch to the yellow TP5x. And made some more birdies. So.. more signs. ?
Seriously though, I was hitting some great wedge shots with the TP5x today, and it’s real good off the tee. They’re doing what I’m asking them to do. Glad I ordered 4 dozen. One less thing.
I bought the three boxes of yellow mentioned a few posts above and then ordered the 4 for 3 from TGW. I am going to load up my shag bag with ‘21 TP5x, so that my practice will be with the same ball I play. How’s that for commitment? Still shooting for that scratch goal.
I love it! I’ll still try a few others on real casual outings, and the new Prov1x still has my attention for when I’m playing the ZX7, but I don’t know how often that will be. Outside of that, I’m all in on the new TP5x. I put some in every bag for the same reason. If I’m somewhere and want to putt/chip, I want them with me.
Switched to yellow today playing with the wife. Had an old one I started with that had already played a round, and switched to this one just before the turn. Hitting some fairways (and some limbs), couple tough punch outs from mixed hardpan/rocks/twigs, and every lie in between, and this is my ball after cleaning. Definitely not perfect, but it’s interesting to me that what seems like a softer cover holds up fine for me and the way I crunch balls, but I can chew the cover off some other X’s (that seem thinner) in just a few holes/couple specific lies. I think they seem to take on colors and look dirtier than previous version, but I don’t have any actual playability issues. The ProV1x doesn’t actually seem any better to me overall. Marks in different ways, but I pull them after the same number of holes on average. Haven’t put the new Srixon XV into play, so can’t say on that one, and I try not to compare balls across different types (X vs. non-X, hard vs. soft, whatever). I can generally play a full round with the TP5x though, with it doing everything I want it to do, and that’s about the most I get out of any ball. So I’m sticking with ’em.
I don’t play yellow much. Mostly when I play with casual groups and one buddy, so this isn’t my area, bit I think I actually have a harder time tracking this yellow than a couple others. I lost it a couple times today in lower light, and I’ve noticed that before. Might just be a me thing.
I played with a yellow TP5 a couple weeks ago and noticed after about four holes the yellow had come off in one spot. The ball only came into contact with clubs and grass. I switched the ball out and did not notice any other issues with any other ball, except the ones I lost. Hoping that is an outlier because I love the ball so far.
It’s a bit of mystery to me, because I’m really hard on balls, but this cover seems thicker and softer, and like it gets rubs and smudges more than actual scuffs or cuts for me. The turf here is definitely outside the norm from my experience though so who knows. With some harder balls with thin covers I can get through them real quick on certain strikes. Like when I pinch them it cuts, and these seem more pliable-ish. It’s weird. Srixon’s always seemd the most durable, and I like V1x, which seems close in cover durability for me. They’ve softened that this year too though.
I loaded up a sleeve from a different box to see if I get any different results, and if it ever dries out here that could maybe change things too.
The TaylorMade yellow seems to have a bit more of a green hue in it. If you are losing the yellow in lower light, how can you possibly track a white one?
It’s interesting you ask that, because Wife was using a Vice Pro Plus .. yellow (?) that look really green to me, and I couldn’t follow that thing in the air well at all. I’m better with their bright red. Like I said, probably a me thing, but would likely keep me from playing it for anything serious. I literally had no idea where it went a few times today. I mostly know where I hit something, but one was really hard to find and I was laughing when she went full @Smiter and suggested we just check the video. Lol. I don’t know if I see white better or it’s just more familiar maybe.
I am leaving work early tomorrow to play a quick 9 and I will keep an eye on how the balls hold up. I hope they hold up well because I have about 20 sleeves of TP5s.
Me too. I played a regular 5 a little bit today, but not enough to get a feel for durability.
I played 9 holes today and was disappointed in the durability of the yellow TP5. I used brand new balls and noticed after 3 holes that one of the balls had a small scuff mark on it. I looked through my bag at the TP5s I used the last time I played and all of them had scuff marks were the yellow had come off.
I have some white TP5 balls I will try next time I play and see if they are any better.
I swapped balls on hole 11 today, because mine had a nick in it. It had flown over a path I couldn’t see at serious velocity, and may have hit it, so I didn’t really worry about it.

This is the one I finished with. Couple little rubs, but I’ll start with it next time out and probably get 9 holes or so.
For those of you who have played the previous version, would you say the ’21 ball is better or worse for durability as I have played a couple rounds with the ’19 ball and am seeing quite a bit of marking on them that I haven’t seen on the ’21 CSX I have also been playing
After how the ’19 TP5x performed on Saturday, I am definitely keen to see how the new version performs, but durability and it being more expensive than the CSX means it needs to perform a lot better for me to consider a permanent swap to a TM ball
1st the yellow really stands out to me and very easy to see. Has a great feel off all the clubs. Hit my longest drive the other day with it at 271yards.
On approach shots I am seeing good spin and balls not rolling out excessively from the ball marks. Had several the other day that spin back off a 9i and a PW.
Feel off the putter is where this ball stands out for me, I like the soft feel of it and it seems softer to me than the Chrome Soft which I really like a lot.
Durability seems pretty good, I bounced one off a cart path yesterday and the ball had just a minor scuff that I could feel.
The Chrome Soft is actually the softer of these two balls based on compression.
I am no ball expert at all, could the softer feel be a cover difference? I used both today putting and the CS was more noticeable sound wise.
And it’s interesting to me that I tried to play yellow more this year (kind of new to me) and ended up liking this color yellow best. I didn’t think I would early on.
Also noticed that one of our favorite YouTube fitters, who are known to be particular about little things, after playing through quite a few others finished the year playing TP5x. Been using it as a club testing ball too.
Cool. I played that ball a lot. I imagine they can be had for a decent price too?
I like the 2019 TP5x better than the 2021 model too. I stocked up big time on the 2019s.
39.99 I believe…..need to stock up!
I just found a bunch of that version 5X today I need to get rid of. I played through all the 5 I guess. I can’t say I noticed too much difference between that 5 and the current one when I tried them. Wasn’t long though, because I really liked the new X. What are you seeing that makes them a better fit for you?
Was cool to rush home and see Rory and Morikawa hole out back to back to finish with them too.
The TP5x works well for my game too. I had my best rounds with the TP5x over the last year or so.
I’ve been playing around with golf balls to see which one I like the best.
This may surprise you, but the new Wilson Triad golf balls are some of the best feeling golf balls and I was hitting them the straightest today out of the 3 balls I was testing (Maxfli Tour X was the 3rd and it’s solid but nothing special)
