We are continuing on our quest to find the best sunglasses on the market for the golf course. When I set out to do this review there were certain companies that immediately came to mind and one of those companies was adidas Golf. I am such a huge fan of their shoes and apparel so I was holding out high hopes for a hole in one with their sunglasses as well. We received two pairs of glasses from adidas the ladies are Adilibria Shield and the men’s pair are Retego.

From the company:
Adilibria Shield:
In an effort to produce the best performing sunglasses both on and off the course, adidas eyewear incorporated the latest in eyewear technology and style to create the perfect fusion of fashion and function. Made with a lens that offers crystal clear, distortion-free views from all angles, a tint that enhances color differences between the ball, horizon and the green, and a stylish, snug and comfortable fit specifically for a woman’s face, the adilibria shield is a necessary piece of equipment to enhance your golf game. The adilibria shield includes all of the technical benefits of the last generation of adilibria with a new modern wrap around look created with help from Natalie Gulbis.

Adilibria Shield - Ladies Sunglasses

Retego:
adidas eyewear launches its new 2010 men’s golf-specific sunglasses, the retego. Designed in collaboration with internationally acclaimed British-born PGA Tour star golfer Justin Rose, the retego boasts a modern, athletic style for those golfers who prefer to go against the grain.”

With more and more players wearing sunglasses on the golf course, eyewear has been reinvented as a piece of necessary equipment, not just a fashion statement. Made with a lens that offers crystal clear, distortion-free views from all angles, a tint that enhances color differences between the ball, horizon and the green, and a casual, snug and comfortable fit, the retego is a necessary piece of equipment to enhance your golf game.

Retego - Men's Sunglasses

Both pairs of glasses came in a great protective hard case and inside is a sunglass bag that not only protects the eyewear but is also ideal for cleaning them. The style of these two sunglasses are very different but they both offer superior sun protection and advanced technologies(see below for a detailed list of the technology). Based on style alone the ladies glasses were a huge hit and the guys were fairly mixed. Some men felt they were a little too square or boxy in shape and preferred they were more circular while others fell instantly in love with the look. I know for me the look of the ladies glasses was by far my favorite of any brand that I tried. I thought they were classy, stylish, and modern and I just loved the way they looked on my face. The ladies sunglasses are offered in four different colors but I just loved the white that we got to test. It matched with every outfit and added a touch of class to whatever I wore.

While some men weren’t too keen on the look of the men’s glasses comfort was a whole other story. Every single tester said they were unbelievably comfortable and feather light. The same can be said for the ladies pair. They are so lightweight that I didn’t even know I was wearing them and the plastic frame stayed cool no matter how hot the temperature got outside. At first many were unsure about the plastic frame but we all quickly realized these glasses are extremely durable and the material makes these glasses so comfortable. Not one person complained that they were getting a headache or that their ears hurt because the glasses were squeezing too tight. The same thing goes for the nose clips, they are soft and flexible ensuring great comfort and no red lines on your nose.

Both sunglasses scored high remarks on the comfort side but it was the function that truly made them shine. The Lens Stabilizing Technology, also known as LST, really impressed all the testers. Everyone was able to wear the sunglasses through an entire round with no issue at all. We could read the green and follow our balls with absolutely no eye strain and the colors were crystal clear. With the wrap around effect of the sunglasses no light was let in confirming 100% UV protection and no squinting necessary.

Normally I would summarize the technilogical details of a product but adidas eyewear has really thought of everything for the consumer so I felt it was best to provide the bullet point information directly from the company. All of our testers were blown away by how great these sunglasses were. Adidas eyewear passed every test we threw at it and I can also happily say that the ladies Adilibria Shield sunglasses have not left my side since testing them. THE TECHNOLOGY:
ADILIBRIA SHEILD TECHNOLOGY:
GOLF SPECIFIC LIGHT STABILIZING TECHNOLOGY: Designed to give you the best possible view of the course, the adilibria shield is tinted with the mahogany colored LST lens that enhances color contrast between the horizon, the ball and the green. The LST lens diminishes eyestrain by harmonizing light changes. Beyond crisp colors, this lens protects your eyes from UVA, B and C sunrays for full spectrum protection.
PERSONALIZED FIT: No two faces are the same. The adilibria shield offers double-snap nose pads that can be adjusted to better fit the face and help keep lashes from hitting the lens. Made of auto-fit SPX ™ material, these nose pads are washable, adjustable and are designed to glide through your hair snag-free. Beyond the course, the adilibria shield was designed for your everyday use. Providing both style and performance, these sunglasses take you from fairway to every day.
9 BASE PC SHIELD: Built to provide clear, undistorted views at all angles, the adilibria shield offers a decentered wraparound lens that allows crystal clear, accurate vision even on the back swing. With a full wraparound view, the adilibria shield provides maximum protection from harmful UV rays, and also gives a secure fit designed for a woman’s smaller face.
COMFORT: Weighing only 20 and 24 grams respectively, it’s easy to forget you are wearing sunglasses! Built with patented SPX material and Flex Zones in the temples to prevent uncomfortable pressure behind the ears.
VENTILATION SYSTEM: When every detail counts, from the force of wind to the direction of the green, having complete visual clarity is key. With a new ventilation system located on the lug area, the adilibria shield ensures a fog-free game.
STYLE: Revamped to provide female athletes with a styling that goes beyond the course, the adilibria shield incorporates a style-savvy larger wraparound lens, sport-inspired temples and various colors and sizes that suit your personal style.
VISION CORRECTION: And with RX ready inserts, the adilibria shield is designed to enhance your performance no matter what your vision correction needs.
•The collection includes both small and large lens designs in four different color combinations. Available now, the adilibria shield’s suggested retail price is $125 U.S.

RETEGO TECHNOLOGY:

RX ADAPTER SYSTEM: Like all Performance Sport models of adidas eyewear, the retego can be fitted with optical solutions to correct impaired vision among golfers. The RX adapter system can carry an Rx lens and fit directly into the half-frame model. With the adapter, the filters simply clip in and out of the frame after your optician has glazed your adapter. This means that in a matter of seconds, you can insert filters either with or without optical correction. Alternatively, simply clip in the Performance Insert™. This optical insert is secured to the bridge behind the filters. After changing the filter, it can simply be clipped back onto the bridge – suitable for wearers who need to change filters quickly because of the changing light on the golf course, but refuse to compromise on their vision.
LST (LIGHT STABILIZING TECHNOLOGY): Designed to give you the best possible view of the course, the retego offers LST Active, LST Contrast, LST Contrast Light, and LST POL (polarized) lenses. The LST lens diminishes eye fatigue by harmonizing light fluctuations. In addition to enhancing contrast and color, this lens protects your eyes from UVA, B and C rays for full spectrum protection.
PERSONALIZED FIT: No two faces are the same. The retego offers Double-Snap Nose Pads that can be adjusted for optimal fit, and are made of soft, traction-grip that is equally suited for everyday use. Providing both style and performance, these sunglasses take you from fairway to every day.
8 BASE DECENTERED VISION ADVANTAGE PC LENS: Built to provide clear, undistorted views at all angles, the retego offers a decentered wraparound lens that allows crystal clear, accurate vision even on the back swing. With a full wraparound view, the retego provides maximum protection from harmful UV rays, and also gives a secure fit
COMFORT: Long days on the course require ultimate comfort. Made of lightweight SPX material, retego weighs in at less than one ounce. Built with Flex Zones in the temples to prevent uncomfortable pressure behind the ears, it’s easy to forget you are even wearing sunglasses.
VENTILATION SYSTEM: When every detail counts, from the force of wind to the direction of the green, having complete visual clarity is key. With a new ventilation system located on the lug area, the retego ensures a fog-free game.
MSRP: $140 (LST Contrast and LST Active), $190 (LST Polarized).

lovin’ the Retego!! sunglasses made for the golf course, and yep, i can see why you wouldn’t want to summarize all the technology packed into these suckers! i’d definitely be interested in picking some of these up. thanks for the review!

  2. thanks1974 says:

Fab review GG. It’s amazing how far sunglasses have come in terms of technology and adidas’ 2010 line really proves that!

  3. Smallville says:

Not exactly my cup of tea. Not they look I gravitate to when looking at sunglasses. I wish they had provided the RX inserts for the Adilibria. I looked at the website and saw a lot more pleasing men’s glasses, so Adidas does make sunglasses I like, the Retego’s just weren’t in that group for me.

I did not see that any of the lenses are polarized, which is a huge plus for me. Polarized lenses make a huge difference.

  4. Administrator says:

    Smallville-

They do offer lenses that are polarized as well. It’s the LST Pol. If you check out the technology bullet points it lists LST POL and has a price with those lenses.

Also, the Adilibria does come with RX inserts. This is from the tech bullet points:

•VISION CORRECTION: And with RX ready inserts, the adilibria shield is designed to enhance your performance no matter what your vision correction needs.

  5. Puttin4Bird says:

Those Retegos are right up my alley! The prices seem right in line with other top of the line sunglasses options out there. Thanks for the review!

  6. sammy bryant says:

smallville- the admin is of course right, we do offer polarized versions, as well as the option to interchange polarized lenses into the frames. Most of the PGA Tour players we work with do not prefer polarized lenses for playing in. Polarized lenses can for some players, distort their peripheral vision, and in a game that’s predominantly played that way, it can be a negative impact on the game. Polarized is the best tool for water-related proximity activities for reducing glare. But we know people like them just the same, so that’s why they are available.

and the adilibria shield offers 2 different performance inserts for Rx correction.

    Thanks all, happy playing!

  7. Smallville says:

Yes, I saw that the Adilibria has the RX inserts. I was just saying I wish they had supplied some for the review—I would think most people have never seen what they look like. I only knew there was such a thing a few days ago when looking for prescription sunglasses.

I didn’t click on enough of the lenses to see the polarized ones, my mistake!

  8. aggro says:

Love the Retego, but I don’t think they would look very good on me.

  9. jeffzilla says:

another negative about polarized for golf:
Polarized lenses are designed to eliminate reflection (glare) off flat surfaces (like a green). If you eliminate all reflection you lose the ability to see grain and contour and don’t get a true read on the green. I love polarized for water, but would never wear them on the course.

  10. Lyn says:

Please let me know where I can purchase the ladies Polarized adilibria sunglasses I am in Phoenix Arizona, I realize they are online but would like to try them on first. Thanks
