Australian PGA Champtionship – Day 1

A thunderstorm brought a premature end to play on day one of the Australian PGA Championship with 78 players still finish their first round. Similar to the situation at the first two days of the Australian Masters, large galleries followed John Daly. Daly stumbled at one point in his round with a double bogey and a bogey but then recovered with five birdies in his last 13 holes to record a 71 and share in 18th position.

2006 US Open Champion, Geoff Ogilvy made a great start on the 10th with a birdie and then an eagle on the 11th hole. Ogilvy, whom John Daly described as one of the best iron players he’d seen, was promising something special but his round stalled with a string of eight straight pars coming home to end up with a 5 under par 67 and T3. Ogilvy agreed with media suggestions that he could have birdied every hole on his way out. “I started very well, I was three-under after three which is always a nice way to start,” Ogilvy said. “I played really solid on the front nine, not so solid on the back nine, but it was getting pretty windy in the last eight or nine holes. I played really well and it [the front nine] could’ve been a pretty special 9 holes and then I kind of unravelled a little bit on the back nine but as I said it got a bit tricky and blustery.”

Fellow US PGA Tour player, New Zealand Tim Wilkinson, was the clubhouse leader at six-under par when the approaching storm caused play to be officially called off for the day.
Defending champion Peter Lonard started his round with a two-under 70. ¨Robert Allenby was tied for 15th with last weekend’s Australian Masters winner Rod Pampling on two-under when play was called off.

US PGA Tour player, Mathew Goggin was four-under at the halfway point of his suspended round. Fellow US PGA Tour player and 2006 Australian Open winner John Senden, shot a 3 under 69.
With an incomplete 1st round, temperatures being forecast to reach 90°F and another thunderstorm predicted to hit late in the day, Friday’s play promises to be eventful. Will the closely watched John Daly make the cut? Log on to THP tomorrow to find out.

Cheers Mate
