Limited Edition season is most definitely upon us.
Eight months after the company debuted their Apex Ai200 and Ai300 iron sets, things are about to get, dark.

Callaway Apex Ai200 and Ai300 Black Shadow Irons
You read that right, Callaway is taking two of their most successful irons to the dark side. Call them blacked out, murdered out, or whatever other overdone saying you want, so long as you also admit that no matter what the name, the dark finish is always a fun addition to a lineup.

As far as the technical side of things, this release is the same high-performance design which was released back in August 2024 by Callaway Golf. In case you need a refresher on all which that entails, jump into our feature release article here for the full breakdown and differentiation of the two models.

So, what changes? Well, the application of a chrome plated black finish which Callaway has named their “Black Shadow” finish. According to the company, this is all about bringing even more striking looks to irons which already have top of the line performance. This is an exclusive look, and a limited one to boot.
The Details

While the standard release of the Apex Ai200 and Ai300 are nothing short of phenomenal in terms of looks, there is just something about a dark finish on irons which takes things up a notch for many golfers. No doubt there will be many excited about this Limited Edition run from Callaway Golf.
The Callaway Apex Ai200 and Ai300 Black Shadow finish, will hit retail 4/22/25. Pricing will be $1599 for a 7-piece set, or $229 per stick. They will be paired with True Temper DG Mid 100’s (R, S) in gunmetal along with Golf Pride Z-Grips.

That back of clubhead chipping/flaking would bother me too. I don’t love that, to put it mildly.

I sent a message to Callaway about it, curious to see what their response will be.

I mean it can’t hurt maybe they send you replacements and now that you have the (cringe) iron covers should eliminate the chipping

My iron covers arrived this week, all the way from South Korea via Ebay ($19)
I just can’t bring myself to put them on

Any word back from Callaway
I’m late to this thread but I did get to see a set of these last week in a golf shop. They are without a doubt some of the best looking irons I’ve seen.

Yeah I noticed Mr 3put was having some issues hopefully that’s just a rare occurrence with these.
I love the finish but even the chrome looks great!

Yes, they replied thru email to have me call them to discuss a solution.
I’ll be doing that this week.

That sounds promising!

I wonder if a matte clear coat would help protect the black finish?
Tape off the face, tape off the shaft, a put a couple coats of a matte clear coat on the backs of the irons.
An added layer of protection for them.
Thoughts?

It would at the very least wear away first and provide a visual indication of when to reapply.
[QUOTE=”FKN3PUT, post: 13423594, member: 50255″]
Called today and spoke with Callaway customer service about the black wearing off the irons.
She said they haven’t had any issues with them, but did say the TI Fusion irons were really bad.
They are sending me a whole new set of irons under a warranty exchange, and I’ll send them back my current ones.
Should be here in about 7-10 days.
Unbelievable customer service as usual from Callaway.
Might have to use my iron head covers with the new set. 😮
The Callaway Cargo bag helps a lot keeping the heads apart, but there is still some contact.

That really is outstanding customer service love hearing stories like this. The people that just complain on feedback section on the website without trying to reach out first could learn a thing or 2 from your experience.

They are your clubs, so you gotta do what you think is best. As much as people would cringe, if I had them and wanted to preserve the finish I would have to use headcovers. A matte clear coat won’t work nearly as well as covers to prevent the clubs form hitting each other to begin with.
I would also have concerns about the clear coat actually bonding to the iron finish as well. Or it may react with the finish weirdly, etc. And end result think about resale or trade value. I’m not buying clubs that someone sprayed clear coat on, or I would really question if someone would accept them in on future trade at all. It’s kind of a no turning back decision.
