Callaway is taking one of its most-played irons on tour and making it available to the public in extremely limited quantities.
This is not a standard Apex release with a raw finish added at the end. The iron began as a tour-driven project, went through an extended validation process with Callaway staff players and non-staffers and has already found its way into bags across the PGA Tour and DP World Tour.
Jacob Davidson of Callaway’s Product Strategy Team said the Apex MB Raw has been the company’s most-played iron on the PGA Tour during numerous weeks and is used by the majority of Callaway players on the DP World Tour. Sam Burns, Min Woo Lee, Si Woo Kim, Nicolai Højgaard and Chris Kirk are among the players who have used the design in competition.
That level of adoption helps explain why Callaway is bringing the iron to retail, even if only in a limited first run.
“We wanted to bring in these limited offerings for at least the consumers to have an opportunity to buy what our Tour pros are playing,” Davidson said.
Rebuilding Callaway’s Muscle Back
The Apex MB Tour Raw began with Callaway taking a deep look at its muscle-back platform.
Ryan Ritchie, Callaway’s Senior Manager of Irons R&D, said the company had seen growing interest in X Forged among tour players who were focused on consistency, performance, feel and sound. That pushed the team to reconsider what its muscle back needed to be.
“We decided we were going to do a whole rework on our muscle back,” Ritchie said. “We knew we had some work to do and we established that the muscle back sort of needs to lay the foundation for our Tour product.”
Rather than beginning with a broad retail target, Callaway identified its primary muscle-back players, studied the heads they played most often and built the brief around those golfers.
The Callaway MB ’18 served as an important reference point. Callaway also used an X Prototype combo set developed for Japan as an early test platform. That iron shared some shaping and specification similarities with the MB ’18 but introduced a different sole design that had already received positive feedback on the Japan Tour.
Callaway brought that prototype to the PGA Tour and used the response to guide the next phase of development. The team then combined three-dimensional scans of the MB ’18 with elements from the X Prototype to establish the shape, sole geometry and overall direction of the new iron.
Ritchie said the company wanted to create “the classic modern shape that can last for years to come.”

The Tour Tri-Sole
The Apex MB Tour Raw has a relatively wide sole when viewed from the bottom. However, Callaway used a three-part sole design to control how much of that surface actually interacts with the turf.
“For a muscle back, it has a pretty wide sole,” Ritchie said. “But as you start digging in, you’ll notice that there’s things about this sole that actually make it play like a narrow sole.”
The leading-edge relief runs in a full band from the hosel and around the toe. According to Ritchie, that reduces the chance of the club catching in thick rough or during swings that produce more toe-side interaction.
The center section of the sole provides a narrower playable area that is closer to what golfers would expect from a traditional muscle back. It gives players the ability to flight the ball and alter shot shape without a wide section of sole working against them.
The rear section features significant trailing-edge relief. Removing that material allows the head to exit the turf more easily after impact.
“The trailing edge is quite large, where you’re relieving all of that material in order to allow the club to really release through the turf, through rough, and really be fast and play like a classical muscle back,” Ritchie said. “But it has the modernization of this wide sole in order to give you a little bit more help and stability.”
Shape and Construction
The Apex MB Tour Raw is a one-piece forging made from 1025 carbon steel. The back of the head is clean, with the Callaway Chevron serving as the main visual element. Callaway also made several less obvious changes to the shape.
Ritchie said the topline is thicker than what would normally be found on a traditional muscle back, but the geometry is designed to make it appear thin from the playing position. The added mass is intended to improve consistency on strikes that move vertically across the face.
“This muscle back has a thicker topline than you would say on a traditional muscle back,” Ritchie said. “However, when you look at it at address, it does look thin, like a traditional muscle back.”
Callaway uses a 360-degree milling cut around the entire face perimeter to control the final shape. That process also creates a secondary chamfer along the leading edge.
“This allows us to maintain that true, precise shape that our players are looking for,” Ritchie said, “while also creating this other secondary chamfer on the leading edge, which allows the blade to really get into the turf faster and quicker with less friction.”
The Raw Finish
As the name indicates, the irons feature an unfinished raw surface rather than a plated chrome finish. The exposed carbon steel will naturally develop rust and patina over time. The exact appearance will vary based on use, moisture, storage and how the owner maintains the clubs.
Callaway describes the finish as being pulled directly from its tour-truck offering. The purpose is to give players the same type of head used by tour professionals while allowing each set to develop its own appearance.
Tour Validation
Callaway developed the Apex MB Tour Raw with specific players in mind, including Min Woo Lee.
Davidson said Lee tested prototypes at Callaway’s performance center before putting the irons into play. Lee later won with them on the PGA Tour in Houston, giving the design an early competitive validation. The iron continued to spread from there.
“Fast-forward to later that year in the season, seeing guys like Si Woo, Min Woo, Nicolai Højgaard, Chris Kirk, you know, have all played these over the last 12 months or so,” Davidson said.
He also noted that non-staff players have tested and played the iron, although Callaway kept distribution tight because of limited supply.
Who are the Apex MB Tour Raw Irons For?
The Apex MB Tour Raw is a straightforward release for a very specific player. To our eyes, the most interesting technology feature is the Tour Tri-Sole. Callaway has created a wider sole for added stability, then used leading- and trailing-edge relief to make it move through the turf more like a narrower blade.
The shaping work is also more involved than it first appears. The thicker topline, 360-degree perimeter milling and additional leading-edge chamfer are all intended to improve consistency while preserving the compact look expected from a muscle back.
This is still a blade. It is designed for players who control contact, trajectory and face delivery at a high level. Callaway is not presenting it as a broad-fit iron, and its limited availability reflects the size of the intended audience.
For that golfer, the Apex MB Tour Raw offers a rare opportunity to buy an iron developed through the same process and in the same form as the heads currently being played on tour.
