Two years ago, Callaway relaunched the Big Bertha irons after years away from having their iconic name on a set. The iron set, which was reviewed by THP here, quickly became incredibly popular with major distance claims and unique hollow body design. That was back in September of 2014, and today Callaway is launching the successor to that line with the Big Bertha OS.
The Tech Story
Last week, THP previewed the new Callaway Big Bertha Fusion driver and it featured what the company calls “Exo-Cage”. If you missed that, you can read more about it here. The Exo- Cage’s combination of strength and light weight allows engineers to distribute more discretionary weight into strategic locations to promote forgiveness and to function more efficiently. In theory, this would promote more ball speed across all areas of the face.
Next Gen 360 Face Cup
Next-generation 360 Face Cup technology elevates clubface COR closer to the USGA limit to produce even faster ball speeds and more distance.
Higher Launch for Longer Carry from Tungsten-Loaded Standing Wave
Tungsten-Loaded Standing Wave technology in the sole lowers the center of gravity to promote a higher launch angle for longer carry and more ball speed on hits low on the face.
Control Features
Progressive Center of Gravity for Increased Control
Progressive Center of Gravity technology entails moving the CG location progressively lower in each head from the highest-lofted to the lowest-lofted, promoting higher launch and long carry in the long-irons and increased control in the short-irons.

They look beefy and I love it! I feel like I could hammer the ball with them.
Wow..$1300 for a SGI line, that is stretcing it a bit in my mind.
@CAA_Beat
That is the going price for many of the hollow body tech filled sets now. See the Titleist TMB coming in at $1600, etc.
I think it’s a lot for a SGI that’s all. The TMB is more of a players blade style, and for the record, I think $1600 is too high for that as well, probably less expensive options that would fit the bill as well…IMO.
But I understand with all the new technology going into today’s clubs in all segments, it doesn’t come cheap.
They (Big Bertha OS) are a nice looking club.
Callaway is reaching back and helping golfers with these recent releases. The larger more forgiving irons will be key for many golfers. Glad to see they are thinking about all levels of golfers.
Great looking clubs and I love the tech, but man that is a lot of cash. Think I will keep my hollow bodied Cleveland 588 MT’s.
As a Senior these are very intriguing!!! I don’t like the thick top line but the performance may over ride that concern!
I love what Callaway is going here. Push the tech and the forgiveness as far as possible even if it isn’t the prettiest club in the world. Performance, performance, performance.
Not sure what Callaway is doing with their club releases? Now they will have XR, XR Pro, XR OS, Steelhead XR and then the Apex line. Where do these slot in or are they meant as the replacement for the XR series? They’re starting to act like TM on the multiple releases. Very confusing.
Lester,
With XR and XR Pro being two years Old now, the Steehewd line is replacing them.
These may not be the most pleasing to the eyes but I really want to hit them I’m very intrigued by the hollow body design
