There are certain moments in golf equipment history that carry more weight than others. For Callaway, one of those moments came in 2000 with the release of its first-ever golf ball, the Rule 35.
At the time, the concept was simple. Rather than overwhelming golfers with options, Callaway introduced two distinct choices. A softer-feeling ball in blue packaging and a firmer option in red. The name itself was a reflection of the company’s approach, a fictional addition to the game’s 34 rules that encouraged golfers to enjoy themselves a bit more.
More than two decades later, Callaway is revisiting that moment with the release of the Chrome Tour and Chrome Tour X Retro Collection golf balls.
A Nod to Rule 35
The Retro Collection is exactly what it sounds like. A throwback to the beginning of Callaway’s golf ball journey, with visual cues that pay homage to the original Rule 35 lineup.

Chrome Tour arrives in blue packaging, while Chrome Tour X takes on the red. The color distinction mirrors the original concept of soft versus firm feel, though today’s performance differences are far more refined than they were in 2000.
It’s a simple idea. Nostalgia sells, but it’s even better when packed in a modern wrapper. Golfers who remember Rule 35 will appreciate the connection, while newer players get a glimpse into the origins of one of the most recognizable ball lines in the game.
Modern Performance Platform
While the packaging looks back, the performance is firmly rooted in the present.
Both the Chrome Tour and Chrome Tour X Retro Collection golf balls are built on the same platforms as their standard counterparts. That means the visual throwback does not come at the expense of performance.

Inside the ball, Callaway utilizes its Tour Fast Mantle, a material designed with a higher flex modulus to act like a stiffer spring. The goal is to increase ball speed while maintaining stability through impact.
Flight characteristics are driven by the company’s Seamless Tour Aero design, which uses a refined dimple pattern to promote consistent trajectory and dependable distance across a wide range of conditions.

Surrounding those internal layers is Callaway’s Precision Tour Urethane cover. This is where much of the feel and greenside control comes into play, delivering the soft response and spin that golfers expect from a premium tour-level golf ball.
All of this is produced through Callaway’s Precision Technology manufacturing process, which focuses on maintaining consistency from ball to ball.
Chrome Tour vs Chrome Tour X
As with the standard lineup, the Retro Collection maintains the distinction between Chrome Tour and Chrome Tour X.

Chrome Tour is positioned as the slightly softer-feeling option, offering a balance of speed, control and feel that will appeal to a wide range of players.
Chrome Tour X leans firmer and is typically favored by golfers who want a more responsive feel and a bit more control on full swings.
While the color-coded packaging is a direct callback to Rule 35, the performance differences between the two models are far more nuanced than a simple soft versus firm split.
A Limited Release with Familiar Roots
Callaway has built a reputation for creative limited-edition golf ball releases, often tying designs to specific events or seasonal themes. The Retro Collection takes a slightly different approach by looking inward rather than outward.
Instead of celebrating a tournament or time of year, this release highlights a foundational moment in the company’s history. It’s a reminder of where Callaway started in the golf ball category and how far its technology has come since.
For golfers already playing Chrome Tour or Chrome Tour X, this release offers a way to enjoy that same performance with a unique presentation. For others, it may serve as an entry point into a lineup that has continued to evolve over the past two decades.
Pricing and Availability
The Callaway Chrome Tour and Chrome Tour X Retro Collection golf balls will be available beginning March 25.
Pricing is set at $59.99 per dozen.

I’ve decided I’m buying a bunch of these.
Fun look back. I dig it
I love this so much, I remember buying callaway balls back in the day that looked just like that when I was getting into golf, great nostalgia

I think there’s another week of B3G1
Too retro for me: I don’t want to go back to drawing lines on my golf balls.
I like the looks of those better than the current Callaway logo they are putting on the balls.

I’m saving my points for a Mini (I have like $350 worth right now)
I think I have to pick up a dozen of these. I played the original in high school golf and loved them! Plus, I still have one of these sitting beside me and probably need the new and improved.

Love that!
(our 2018 Grandaddy tees are the best ones I’ve seen done and I’ll fight to the death saying that)
Cool throwback. I still occasionally find the OG ones out on the course, gives me a chuckle that somebody is playing a ball that old.
Yes sir!
These bring back some good memories.
I do prefer balls with alignment aids but will get a box of the CTX just for the nostalgia.
I like the look of these as I can remember back in the day playing the originals. Compare to the top Flites and some of the other low end brands I played at the time, I thought these were premium.

Will you keep any for collecting or use them all?

I will definitely save at least 1 ball of each for collection. But… that could end up being a used ball.

Just added these to the lineup for the season! Bought 3 dozen CT X and 1 CT. Pulled one of each to save and add to my collection!
I added a dozen. I will save the box and sleeves. This is one of the cooler special releases theyve done
Its funny that I found an OG Rule 35 the other day. Like 4 days before these came out. Its a great look honestly. They should keep making these.
