TD Max Driver

Callaway Golf Elyte Triple Diamond Max Driver

Although every release cycle from Callaway Golf has its own new main naming convention, Triple Diamond has begun to take a life of its own since its inception. Born from the primary of creating a Tour driven driver which would garner the brand more play and wins, its evolution since then is a story that in and of itself could merit a documentary.

Triple Diamond is the key to Callaway Golf’s mission on Tour, from Prototype to household recognition, it is truly a franchise now. As such, the brand is giving people what they want, after the success of bringing the Tour influenced TD Max to retail the decision has been made to do it once again, but this time to make it Elyte.

People seem to forget that no one in the industry spends as much on R&D as Callaway Golf. Spending to spend would be one thing, but with Callaway it is a very focused and driven quest to push the envelope of every single release in a way that would make Ely himself smile with pride.

A large piece of that investment has been centered around Tour innovation as previously mentioned. Within that, the company has developed a prototype program which is at the top of the game. Although Triple Diamond was created around the idea of a smaller than maximum size driver which checks all of the low spin and high-workability boxes that their Tour staff demands, its time on the proving ground which is the Tour, has seen Callaway make some very keen observations.

Foremost is the reality that more forgiveness hurts no one, but when dealing with the pickiest golfers on the planet, you have to be clever with how it is presented. That is exactly how the first Triple Diamond Max head was created, to make a more forgiving TD. The catch though was recognizing that the shape and topline of the Triple Diamond has long been a massive part of its professional popularity.

Yes, the Triple Diamond itself has become more neutral over time, but still, with a 450cc size there is always going to be some forgiveness left on the table. With Elyte Triple Diamond Max, the move this year is as it was with Ai Smoke, to take the shaping and lines of the standard TD, and build them into a full 460cc shape.

While that may not seem like much, in a design such as this, 10cc can mean quite a bit of mass relocation and massaging not possible in the smaller version. Not to mention, by keeping the visuals and lines the same, Tour adoption comes much easier, with last year’s version becoming the most played Callaway model professionally.

Technology wise, the Elyte Triple Diamond Max has all the feats of engineering which the core lineup does. If you want to know more on that, be sure to dive into our initial release rundown here. To answer the questions everyone will ask, yes the Thermoforged Carbon Crown is present, as is the 360 Chassis and incredible Ai10x Face.

Final Thoughts

To see Callaway bringing the Elyte version of the Triple Diamond Max to release for consumers will no doubt make both the serious and nerdy amongst us golf equipment addicts extremely excited. The question this year, at least for this writer, is where does it fit?

Last time around, there was a significant gap in the Ai Smoke lineup which the TD Max filled brilliantly. With the foundational trio of heads from the Elyte release this year, it didn’t feel like that gap was nearly as prevalent. So, it will be interesting to see just how it is received, especially with the Triple Diamond Tour Draw being introduced as well.
