Back in early 2018, we got our first look at the last X Forged Utility from Callaway Golf. With an update coming, we wanted to dive right in and share all of the info of this brand new Callaway X Forged UT.
We aren’t talking about something lacking technology though. A.I. Flash Face Cup bringing speed across the entire surface area and urethane microspheres in the hollow body construction for a preferred feel.
Obviously the most attention grabbing from an aesthetics stand point though is the external MIM’d tungsten weighting (more on that in video).
How do they perform? What do they feel like? Check out this video below as we put them to the test in the THP Tech Studio.
Imo, there are two true standouts in the UT segment right now, the Srixon and this. Both rocket launchers, but the X has got the narrow win on looks and feel. Can’t go wrong with either though, not at all.
What a freaking show that young man put on.
That was incredible. I am an instant fan. The way he strikes the ball a joy to watch.
I just pulled the trigger on this club on Sat. I’m interested to see if it will knock out my hybrid.
I need one of these to go with my x-forged cb’s
It would look great I’m sure in your bag! I’m hoping it performs as well on the course as it did in the simulator. ??
Based on the stories of how you were ripping UT’s at the Granddaddy, this should probably happen!
I am pretty sure it is going to happen. The hybrid seems to be a little more versatile. But, there are things the UT can do that the hybrid can’t and vice versa. It wouldn’t hurt to have both right? Wouldn’t likely play them both at the same time. But, on windy days it would be nice to have the UT to keep the ball down a bit.
It sounds like you’re most of the way to rationalizing it.
Watcha thinking for shaft?
I will right a wrong and go with the MMT 105TX. That way I can get a feel for the shaft. Who knows. If I really like it, maybe I would reorder my irons with those this time around.
MMT105X combined with whatever loft suits you… man, I loved that setup on the 4UT (you know, back in November… before winter.)
I think I will go with the 21 degree. Should gap relatively well with my 4 iron.

I prefer the look of the retail over this proto.
Yeah, but if that’s real, it looks hollow body tech’d and better blend with the Apex Pros..
The retail ut is also hollow bodied isn’t it? Looks too thick not to be. And feels that way also. Could be wrong though
Did they call that a hollow cavity or hollow body? I honestly can’t remember. They lost me at spin robustness on some of their stuff around that time. .
It seems holliw. I mean that ^ looks more like how they built the Pros than one meant to look and feel like a CB or the X Forged CB’s, which have some different tech I think. ?
I don’t know. I’m curious to see how the TCB fit in with all the hollow cavity/hollow body they have going on. They honestly look a little like the UT with the rounded edges and stuff.
Fine print confirms hollow on the retail version .

Pretty cool that another variant is out there.
I can’t decide if it goes better with the Pros or not. The middle line does, but the weight seems more out of place.
Yes. Not mincing words, but off that one picture, I’m not into it. Prefer the one I have TYVM
If they had the tungsten internal and kept the finish the same as the Apex Pro, I think it would flow better. But not replaceable then.
Open to the being proved wrong of course, it wouldn’t be the first time a club looked better in hand!
That anecdote made me go the the Callaway site for specs, and darned if you aren’t correct. Plus, it IS a good looking UT.
While I was looking up specs, the 18* UT @ 2.29mm has the same offset as my MB 7i. That’s wild.

Right?! I thought was just being nice and throwing some money back his way. Never would have guessed how they compared. Take away some of that sole junk and apparently you have to start adding offset?
I was just reflecting to myself as I was posting, how many different flavors of "utility" there are now. You’ve got your GI & SGI long irons with lots of ballspeed and plenty of offset. Then you have Utilities such as this with far less offset, flirting with onset. Then you blend into players hybrids, GI hybrids, and fairway woods. Just so many different way to go 200 yards. Each ideal for someone.

I couldn’t agree more
me too
And the feel would blow you away. They’re pretty much utility iron perfection imo
Anyway, it was nice to play it again. It suits me really well and just performs like crazy. I’m still a fan. Think it’s made all the cuts and hanging around for the year.
That’s pretty awesome. My dad wanted one after one swing too.
the 24* with even flow blue 85s is easily one of the most fun golf purchases i’ve ever made… so much so that had to order a 21* just to see what i can do. also i want a whole bag of them.
Any long term players of the ‘18 make the move to the ‘21? Anyone play the stock PX steel in the last version and now playing the PX U?
PX steel is my go to and is a safe bet though they made the U for a reason.
I played the 18 for a couple years. So far, the 21 seems to feel more solid. Less tingy if that makes sense. I love the 18 but thought it kind of felt like a hybrid. The 21 is definitely all iron feeling to me.
Do you feel there is much difference in the performance?
I had an 85 gram Hybrid shaft in the 18. I have the 113 gram MMT 105TX in the 21. Pretty significant difference in ball flight. The 21 seems to launch much much lower off the deck and tee. But the shafts are significantly different. So, I can’t say definitively that the 21 is better. I’m not in love with the mmt so I’ve been on the hunt for something else.
First things first, I’m an 8.3 WHS currently and only play once a week, I swing the driver 103-108 topping out when I’m warm.
I love 2 irons, I generally hit the ball very high and with enough speed I get the ball up easy with a 17-18 degree iron.
I’ve gamed over the last few seasons P790, ping G410, cobra utility, Mizuno mp20 hmb and srixon u85.
So to the Callaway
Looks – I personally think this is one of the best looking driving irons I’ve seen. Small amount of offset, yes you can see some of the junk out the back at address but not enough to worry me. Blade length is decent, I use a player’s distance iron so it’s just in keeping with them for size. The look in the bag I think Callaway have nailed it 9/10
Performance – Well I have the 18 degree 2 iron, off the tee this thing flies, it has a great spring off the face. Seems pretty forgiving on some of my post lockdown choppy swings! You can keep it low enough for me or tee it up and let it go 9/10
Feel – hands down the best feeling long iron I’ve used 10/10
I have it paired up with the PX U 5.5 105g shaft which works really well, my gamers have PX 5.5 at 115g so it’s a good transition into the long iron.
All in all its a great club and I’d highly recommend giving it a go if your in the market for a good looking, good performing, great feeling driving iron.
Really like the dense feel it has. You might not expect that kinda feel when you look at the head.
Noticed something weird on the new 21* X Forged UT. It has a different hosel stamp than the one I bought when they first came out. Don’t all +1 Up (lie angle) come in green from Callaway? The new one is in black and has an x in front of the 21? Anyone have any ideas?
I thought they stopped doing colors with the lie angle. Mine used to come red for 2° flat both the 21 XForged and Apex pro I have are black.
Only complaint I have is that the MMT 105TX seems a little heavy for what I use this club for. I’m not really concerned about making sure it gaps with my 4 iron properly. I want more distance than that. So, I bought a Ventus Blue HB 9X to put in it. Should be roughly 18 grams or so lighter.
