The Cleveland Golf lineup came back with a bang a couple of weeks ago with the launch of their new Launcher XL drivers and fairway woods. Following that up was the Launcher XL Halo irons and we had a full video breakdown of that set. Today, the lineup becomes complete with the preview of the new Cleveland Launcher XL irons.
A couple of years ago, Cleveland released the UHX irons and we dubbed them one of the most underrated sets of the year. The new Launcher XL takes some cues from that set, but builds a different animal, one that after watching the video below, will be extremely well received.
The lineup comes complete with either the True Temper Elevate 95 steel shafts or the Project X Cypher iron shafts. An interesting note is that if you are someone that struggles with the length of irons, the Cleveland Launcher XL irons can be ordered in what is called “Accuracy Build” where the clubs are a half inch shorter across the board. By going with this setup, you would lose the Action Mass CB, which is an 8g weight placed inside the butt end of the grip to deliver more balance.
In our THP Tech Studio video below we kick it off with some Cleveland Launcher XL irons tech talk from an overhead view. From there, we hop into the hitting bay where you will see all of the swings and then finally we sit down in table view and breakdown the data from the swings you saw.
After watching the video above, what are your thoughts on the new XL irons?
For the loft and offset peepers out there, here is a breakdown of the tech specs of the set.

Great video @canadan
The groove changes will be subtle to the eye, but are there to assist with the different shots that one encounters. Much like we have seen with wedges the last few years.
This addition is big time.
That is a nice profile. I don’t care for the badging on a personal preference level, but it fits what they’re doing segment wise perfectly.
I’m with you on the badging. I have a 4-DW (gap) with their now previous generation UHX irons and like them a lot as I’ve played with them all year. The sound off of them is fantastic and it’s nice to see they’ve kept that up with these. I do like the they’ve made the top line profile better. I can see the back of my irons from the 6i on up to the 3i (I purchased their 3 utility with the Recoil stiff shaft later on) and while I hit the stink out of the ball with my long irons they aren’t "good" looking clubs. Luckily for me style points don’t matter and only the score . I do wish they kept simple on the back of the club though purely for aesthetics.
Ugh that trigger
I really didn’t spend a ton of time with the different irons in the set as we were grinding through quite a bit of content, but visually I had to be told by a computer screen that it was occurring (aka I didn’t see it even with the three heads there). Just not really something I’d notice I guess.
It is a very interesting discussion when it comes to the badging that exists. On one hand, we hear it over and over how simple, clean and plain irons are preferred. On the other hand, literally just about every top seller in golf has badging that is more bold. So is it an internet golfer thing or is it a price point thing or is it more of "that’s what is available" thing.
The performance is there but I’m not a big fan of the looks but with an increase in forgiveness with my long irons I could possibly overlook that.
I do have a question regarding the 8g weight in the grip. Is it in the grip or the butt of the shaft? Will this cause regripping issues I guess is what I’m getting at…
Good question. In this diagram it sort of suggests it’s separate of the shaft..

It could, and we are checking to see if their best course of action, but I believe it is a pretty simple solution.
The first version I refer to are the launchers with the black on the back. Those didn’t look so good even though black is slimming.
Awesome. Will be curious to see how that works. Its all minor in the grand scheme this sounds like a fantastic offering from Cleveland.
If I get a chance to hit them again, I’ll let you know. We actually recorded this some time ago, so my memory is pretty cloudy on them.
Thanks so much!
It will be interesting at what price point the set will be for sale. The UHX were really competitive, I paid $600 for six clubs.
The price is listed in the article linked in the first post on our home page as well as our full review.
Good stuff. The CB part is.. interesting. I look forward to seeing them in person.
They basically said the UHX irons looked too good, so people didn’t think they were GI irons, resulting in poor sales. So, Cleveland golf has intentionally made these irons less attractive to sell better?! Thoughts?
I think that is a very poor attempt at writing something to be controversial when there was no controversy.
Looking forward to hitting it and the Halo irons.
Interesting! Worked for me and I do find the UHX appealing -apart from the backside visually in iron 6 and 5.

Absolutely a deal breaker for many players visually. I can’t stress enough how I absolutely nut those clubs. I hit the even worse looking 3 utility UHX with its dump truck ass end so good off of the tee. It’s my 220-230 yard club when I need it to be a safe tee shot on a few tricky holes at my club. At the end of the day it’s the score that counts and it’s pissing my buddies off that I’m scoring better than them with unconventional looking irons LOL
it is not a surprise to me though that a company would add a little bit more mass in the back of the club for the irons that most people have the most amount of struggle getting airborne hitting with confidence.
End of the day though, all about lower scores. I do wonder how high I would launch these, and the laughs that may ensue.
How will this work when it comes time to change grips I wonder?
My takeaways: I really like the v-sole – it’s one thing I’m glad to see transferred between the Srixon/Cleveland/XXIO brands. I’m also pleasantly surprised by the lofts offered – For whatever reason, I was expecting them to be much stronger. And like others, I’ll be interested to see what re-gripping looks like with the Action Mass CB.
Edit: Also forgot to mention that I REALLY like seeing the iron loft listed right on the club!
Oh man, I thought that completed the package SO well!
If you go with a custom grip or a custom shaft in the build, it will not include the Action Mass CB. I am not entirely sure what that means when it comes time to re-grip.
I should have a response to that shortly.
Maybe it looks better in person? Looks cheesy to me online.
Yeah, online pics are SO tough – I thought in person it looked great.
Looks troubling for anyone using screw in club sensors via the butt end of the grip like Shotscope, Garmin, Arccos…
The AM CB is in the shaft, not the grip. Changing your grips will not be an issue.
The article linked in the first post has all the info you need, my good man!

But it was / is controversial! Some of us wonders why the colorful design of the clubs emerged. And the explanation was interesting.
