One of the most exciting annual releases to learn about, yet sometimes one of the least buzzed about, are the new Cobra irons which accompany their metalwoods in each cycle. Sure, the KING Tour and Forged Tec tend to generate the most discussion when it comes to their irons, but dating back almost a decade now, for pure performance and tech, it is hard to beat their annual main iron release.
This year, that means DARKSPEED, and Cobra appears to be turning things up even more.
Cobra DARKSPEED Irons
While you may not realize it, the Aerojet irons were not only one of the most technologically advanced sets which Cobra Golf had ever produced, but the subsequent feedback confirmed their ease and forgiveness. So, where do you go from there? You go hollow of course.
For the new DARKSPEED irons, Cobra took a closer look at their metalwood innovations for motivation, and from that came the realization that by going hollow they could open up yet another level of speed and playability.
Overall, they have created a thinner and more responsive structure by going hollow, as it allowed for the movement of weight to the perimeter as well as increasing the ability of the face to flex (face deflection) by up to 25%. That number, frankly, is staggering when you consider just how good the Aerojet were in pure game improvement performance.
That internal space, which is now created thanks to being a hollow body, meant that PWR-BRIDGE needed to be adapted as well. This year it is now suspended by a single post allowing almost the entirety of its weight to float free. For those unfamiliar, PWR-BRIDGE allows for weight to be precisely located within the heads to optimize CG while also removing anything from the body of the club which could hinder the ability of the irons face to flex.
Speaking of, PWRSHELL H.O.T Face (Highly Optimized Topology) has also been revamped with the face now thinner than ever before. Sure, that is a speaking point that we hear often, but in this case Cobra is backing it up by taking things to 1.6mm compared to the 1.9mm which Aerojet had at their thinnest point. Of course, part of PWRSHELL is H.O.T. which is that topology which optimizes face thickness for the entire set, this year utilizing A.I. to progress it.
No doubt some of you are reading this and posing the question, but what about feel? After all, not only have Cobra’s main release game improvement iron sets historically been among the best feeling year after year, but we know going hollow puts a heavy burden on sound/feel. The answer for Cobra is injecting Foam Microspheres into the cavities which according to them not only supports the PWR-BRIDGE, but also dampens sound to manage vibrational feedback and hone it in.
Additionally, while everyone has gone progressive in their iron sets these days, many forget that Cobra was on the leading edge of that dating back to the F6 irons and their introduction of TECFLO. The latest iteration is here in the DARKSPEED irons implementing a full-hollow design with PWR-BRIDGE and PWRSHELL in the 4-7 then flowing into a full-hollow 8-P without face insert, and half-hollow designs in the GW/SW.
The Details
Cobra is bringing the new DARKSPEED irons in both Variable and ONE Length orientations. Variable will be offered in 4-PW or 5-GW. The ONE Length will be set at 37.25” 7i length in 5-GW with weaker lofts and wider soles in the long irons (5-6 and in the also available 4) in order to blend the distances better.
The irons will be available for pre-order on 1/11/24 and come to retail on 1/19/24. Price for the DARKSPEED irons will be $999 for steel (KBS Tour Lite 105 – R, S) and $1,099 for graphite (KBS PGI – 55 Ladies, 65 Lite, 75R, and 85S).
I get the need for branding and how the colors tie to the two drivers, but wish they would have leaned into the dark theme with the one length badging and not added the red and blue

It KILLED me that in the early leak pics no one seemed to notice it’s hollow. ?. I mean come on lunatics! Lol.
So much awesome tech going on in these and the sole is so great compared to some performance peers. The new look is fantastic and it people don’t give these a try they’re doing themselves a disservice.
Not surprising Cobra has killed it with the looks on these. Traditionally I have not gotten along with hollow body offerings due to the harsh feedback away from center, but reading the details here it sounds like Cobra is taking an active approach to dampen some of that negative feedback.
Thanks @Jman for the write up!
Very nice looking. Another set to ponder? I think maybe so
I was pretty impressed with how the Aerojet irons felt and I think going hollow might allow them to feel even better. Really like what I’m seeing on those sole pics. Tweaking the lofts and sole on the long irons in the OL set is subtle but makes a lot of sense IMO.
I know Forged Tec is often a later release but curious what this drop means for that line, as these seem to be doing a lot of the things the FT line does so well.
Cobra is so good at what they do. These look amazing. That finish!! Gonna have to get over to GH and give these bad boys a go.
These are going to be fun to try.
The more I re-read, listen, and ponder the more I am shocked by this portion of the release. Maybe I haven’t been paying attention, but this proved to be the most unexpected portion of today’s release for me. I was not interested in the DARKSPEED irons (for me), but I can no longer say that truthfully. I am extremely intrigued. Oh, and these are still gorgeous.
Looking at the specs, DarkSpeed lofts are .5* weaker. I’m not sure how much a half degree matters but with the new design and more face flex, it’s a level of fine tuning I find interesting.

They are going to surprise a lot of golfers that give them the chance. They look excellent at setup. Well done sole for forgiveness, fly forever. Just a really really good iron in its class.

I know, hence I get it. Just seems to be a little jarring to my eye on this finish.

Agree here. Maybe go with all red or blue. Both is visually jarring.

I actually agree with you. While I understand the Blue/Red labling has always been the OL differentiator, it is really jarring to this incredible finish and packaging.

Consistent at least and I’d assume they need a color as a differentiator for the heads. A logo or badge wouldn’t be sufficient enough. At least its not yellow

The compact shape for a GI offering is going to please a lot of players who normally won’t give them a look. I can’t wait to see them in person.
They did really good on the look. Crazy the tech going into the faces of irons among other clubs these days.
Man Cobra has done an amazing job at this release from a looks perspective. The Darkspeed irons look amazing, aren’t big and bulky and with all of the tech packed in there will be a strong set for a myriad of golfers this year.
I’m ok with the ONE colorway personally, but get the desire for something that would seem to be more in line with the Darkspeed mantra. I wonder how many MC’ers explore the OL idea when it comes to order day. I know we’ll get at least 3 or 4 who will say they are going that way, but do any pull the trigger?

I noticed that as well. I wondered if the change to hollow body lowered the launch a hair and they had to tweak the lofts to hit their launch window.
My goodness I love the finish. I’m intrigued.
Great write up @Jman … There is a lot to like here with this launch.
The VL version I think are the most visually appealing irons I’ve seen released so far.

I think the ladies line, also with their traditional color, look great too! I do agree the ONE looks too busy with the red and blue.

Oh I like these. Finish looks great and I’m sure the performance is there. I’ve never played Cobra irons but would have no issue putting these in the bag.

Thanks for sharing! What is your club head speed and your typical carry with a 7 iron? Just wondering how much of an improvement it is from your typical numbers.

Not sure on clubhead speed, and apologies for having that cropped out in the photo, unintentional
That all said, 165 is my top end carry with 7 iron
that finish on these looks great. The size sounds intriguing too and makes me want to see them in person
These are sharp looking. Like what they’ve done looks and tech wise with these. Quite nice all around.
If you guys like the looks of these in the pics, you need to see them in person. Photos do not do them justice, they look light years (or dark years in this case) better. All kinds of tech packed into these and they absolutely do not look like they belong in the GI iron space. I was lighting it up distance wise hitting a 7i with a shaft that was not what I was used to. Would definitely need to do some tinkering to get the launch and spin in the right window for me, but will definitely give these a long look.
Good write up as usual
I would recommend the heck out of these. I think a lot of people slept on the AJ line because they were “game improvement” irons so they instantly translated that to huge. They weren’t. And they performed. These being a step up is kind of crazy to think about
For those of you that have been able to try these already, how’s the feel/sound? Anything out there you compare to or against would be helpful.

Good point. Don’t get caught up in labeling these irons as a specific category. People should look at them and hit them.

I have only hit a 7 iron and 9 iron, and to me if you liked the sound of the AeroJet you will like these. Its a bit more deep sounding than those, but really good. Relate it to a more balanced Forged TEC X if people tried those.

Big time preference for color scheme on the standard head from me. Like the squared lines and beveling on the trailing edge. Really nice.

I’ve hit the previous Forged Tec, and a deeper/more balanced version of that would be really nice. I like a little crack that hollow bodies give, but too much is too much.

They nailed the look on these. So so good
These look good for sure… not sure if I would be able to really give them a fair shot in terms of my own bias on looks haha. I believe the last legitimate GI type iron I played was the Cobra Biocell+ They were fun for sure. THe Wilson c300 forged was the next closest, but I didn’t exaclty consider them to be GI
They absolutely nailed the looks on these.

Agreed I’m genuinely looking forward to seeing these in person… And hitting the everloving snot out of the ball with them. I’ll be honest and say that Cobra irons weren’t even on my radar this year, but these are definitely in the mix now.
These will be on my list to try. Am leaning toward a graphite shaft but we will see how they do
Solid work with these… Actually I think all of the GI or line-up iron Releases have been really good. At least in appearance.
Saw these today at PGASS really like the looks of these, the darker finish looks really nice. They didn’t have any to hit so just got to waggle it in the aisle, but I like what I saw.

Since I have yet to get these in hand I am speaking only on intrigue and interest, but these are the surprise of the whole release for me. I played CBs for the previous 8-9 years, prior to picking up a set a of Apex 21, and have paid zero attention to this category of irons. I’ll find out soon enough if they fit me well enough, but I love what they’ve done with these (on paper) in most every area. The good I keep hearing on them just stokes the fire.
So I may have just preordered a Darkspeed 6 iron so I can get a feel for the irons.
Hit the Darkspeed irons again today and they will really move the ball. To me, the sound is similar to the Aerojets, but not quite the same. Maybe a little quieter? Feel is good and seems to have a bit more of a dense feeling to them. Even with the stock steel shaft, I was getting the same distance as my Aerojets, maybe a couple extra yards here or there and it was launching the ball pretty high. I wanted to hit them with the Recoil ESX that I have in my Aerojets, but they didn’t have any of those to try.
