When discussing Cobra irons, the KING and KING Tec models often attract the most attention. However, their core line releases provide significant game-improvement technology without the high price tag associated with the KING series. If you’re seeking technology-packed irons that look and feel great, look no further. Today, Cobra announces the launch of their latest models: the DS-ADAPT and DS-ADAPT MAX irons.
“COBRA has long been a leader in game improvement irons, but the new DS-ADAPT family represents a major breakthrough in both performance and fitting,” said Jose Miraflor, VP of Product Architecture and Consumer Connections at Cobra Puma Golf. “We have two models that can fit a massive group of players with varying swing speeds, all of whom are looking for maximum distance, exceptional forgiveness, and optimal overall performance.”
The Construction – Cobra DS-ADAPT Irons
Cobra’s new DS-ADAPT irons feature a 360 SpeedShell Face, an expansive cup face extending over the topline and toe, connecting at the back of the iron. It represents the largest face cup design they have used. Inside the SpeedShell face is a speed channel designed to enhance ball speed on contact across the face. The SpeedShell works alongside Cobra’s H.O.T. face technology, resulting in a 23% increase in face flex. This combination provides higher launch, increased ball speed, and greater distance.
Thanks to the weight savings achieved through the SpeedShell Face and hollow body construction, Cobra was able to reposition the PWR-BRIDGE. This adjustment helps concentrate more weight lower in the clubhead, promoting a higher launch angle. PWR-BRIDGE is a critical technology that allows the DS-ADAPT irons to flex more freely, similar to the performance of a fairway wood.
As is typical with hollow-body irons, sound is a crucial aspect that can significantly influence a user’s impression. Cobra addresses this by injecting foam microspheres into the head, which expands and dampens vibrations, resulting in a pleasing sound and feel. Additionally, the foam microspheres allow for increased face flex. If you’ve noticed a pattern, Cobra is doing everything possible to enhance the speed of these irons.
TECFLO Set Construction
Many golfers are considering combo or split sets and looking for a progressive set design. Cobra has been a leader in this area, having developed a progressive iron set with their TECFLO construction. This innovative design is a key feature of the DS-ADAPT and ADAPT-Max irons.
In the TECFLO construction of these sets, the 4-7 irons are designed with a hollow body featuring a 360 Speedshell face, PWR-Bridge weighting, and foam microspheres. As we move to the 8-PW (pitching wedge), the hollow body design and foam microspheres remain, but the PWR-Bridge and Speedshell face have been removed. For the gap and sand wedges, the foam microspheres are also absent, but these wedges retain the same badging in the cavity to help enhance sound and feel.
2 Models of Cobra DS-ADAPT Irons
If you’re unsure which model would best suit your game, here’s a comparison: the DS-ADAPT MAX irons are designed for higher handicap players compared to the standard DS-ADAPT. The DS-ADAPT MAX irons feature a thicker topline, a wider sole, and more offset. Additionally, they have weaker lofts, typically 2° less across the board. According to Cobra’s testing, the Max irons offered 1.6° more launch, 2.4 yards higher peak height, 2° steeper descent angles, and an additional 550 rpm of spin.
Cobra DS-ADAPT and DS-ADAPT MAX irons are offered in set configurations of 4-SW and 5-GW. The standard steel shaft option is KBS Tour Lite, while KBS PGI is the standard for graphite shafts.
Initial Thoughts
Thanks to Cobra, I have had the opportunity to spend quality time with the new DS-Adapt irons before their release. During this period, I captured some data using a SkyTrak+ launch monitor, which I will discuss later.
When considering game-improvement irons, it’s common to expect a thick topline. Dating back to the LTD irons, Cobra has done an impressive job of creating a slimmer and more appealing topline, and this trend continues with the DS-ADAPT models. They look very comforting behind the ball without appearing too bulky. Additionally, a slightly darker finish contributes to a sleeker appearance, which often enhances the overall slim look of the irons.
At impact, these irons sound powerful, especially when hitting the longer irons, and while there are foam microspheres to dampen vibrations, there is enough feedback to tell if contact was good or subpar. With the technology present and strong lofts, I expected to see some super low spin. Combining the design with hitting off my indoor mat is a perfect combination for some numbers that might scare people.
The data collected for the 5-iron, 7-iron, and pitching wedge (PW) highlights a few key observations. Firstly, Cobra aimed for these clubs to generate speed, and they delivered on that front. Reviewing additional numbers I gathered over the past year, I’ve noticed significant gains in ball speed with the 5-iron and the 7-iron. While launching the ball has never been an issue for me, all of these clubs produced launch angles within my normal window, achieving peak heights of over 30 yards. With the 7-iron and PW, descent angles were steep enough to help these lower spin shots effectively hold the green.
Cobra DS-ADAPT and DS-ADAPT MAX irons are available for preorder on December 12, 2024, and will be in stores on January 10, 2024, for a price tag of $999 for steel and $1099 for graphite shafts.
More information on the entire DS-ADAPT lineup is available at www.cobragolf.com.

Any negative impacts with your tee game spin
Hardly anything worth noting which is why it was the winner for me. Some of the other balls tested to get more iron spin had noticeable change with driver.

Higher spin on irons doesn’t automatically mean sacrificing off the tee.

Wow! Holy large sole Batman!! @TWright971 are there any alterations done between the irons? Upright, flat, etc? Or they are all standard? Just comparing apples to apples Same shaft in the Adapt & Adapt MAX?
The Darkspeed is 2* flat from standard and has the KBS PGI R flex shaft.
The DS Adapt and DS Adapt Max are 2* Flat from standard and have the Recoil 460 ESX shaft in them. So the Max is a touch more upright than the others but that’s part of the design.

Okay so these just showed up.

7 iron is the Darkspeed, 7 iron 2 is the DS Adapt, and 7 iron 3 is the DS Adapt Max all with Chromesoft.
Darkspeed and DS Adapt both look and feel very similar. DS Adapt Max definitely feels lighter and you can see it has a thicker sole and more offset. Spin went up a good amount with the DS Max ad did descent angle, other numbers were similar.
I was having some trouble with misreads on the Skytrak, will try to get more numbers later. After disconnecting the Skytrak i hit some more with each iron and the Darkspeed and DS Adapt are very similar to me, while the DS Adapt Max feels similar when struck but you can tell it’s lighter than the other 2, the sole is wider and the offset is significant. Thought the offset and the extra loft didn’t seem to affect my swing too much and I didn’t see myself losing it way right in this first session. I ended up putting some face tape on to see impact location and the end of this session and this is the result:

Darkspeed – first was high toe, then some centered then some getting heel side a bit.

DS Adapt – First was toe side, next few were centered, then last was a touch toe Side.

DS Adapt Max – most were high toe, with one going heel side.
Impressive to see the better speed and spin rates from the Max, even with that high toe pattern. Get that centered a bit and you should really see some good numbers.

The feel of all the irons is very nice. Both irons allow you to feel when you have missed the sweet spot but are not harsh. To me the shots that are more towards the heel are harsher than the toe misses but it’s still not an unpleasant feeling just different than the nothingness you feel when you flush one. The flushed shot there is just such a nice thwack sound and you feel almost nothing through the ball. The non flushed is a little higher pitched thwack sound and and bit more rattle in the hands but nothing shocking or unpleasant just a bit more vibration. The misses were not punished much either directionally or distance wise (maybe a few yards each but not much and within my normal realm of dispersion).
As my big miss has been a pull hook I was pleasantly surprised that did not show up today while hitting either iron which to me says more about the DS Adapt Max as I was more worried about that miss with the added offset. Definitely need more time with them to get a good idea but initial thoughts are I’m impressed by both and the MAX with the added loft is giving me more spin without the loss of distance which I can clearly use.

I’ll be interested to see how you make out with the Max. This is the model that interests me.
I saw these out and they look really good. If i had not just bought new irons these would be put through the paces of a fitting. They are just slightly bigger than my 925HM. I will still try them out just because lol. I bet they are forgiving bombers!

I saw then as well. They look pretty good in hand. I saved my swings for driver today but definitely want to get out and hit them.

For the Morgan Cup it’s between these and the King Tour X in my head right now, and a 50/50 call if I had to handicap it today

I’m 100% certain I’ll be in the DS Adapt or DS Adapt Max, the only question is which one? Need to get more practice time in with the 7 irons I have of each to make the final call but first bit this weekend has me leaning Max.
I couldn’t see a lot of difference between these and the Darkspeed heads. The MAX is super chunky. The Adapt is smaller all over. I was told the sound is a vast improvement from the Darkspeed.

have you had more time with these yet? Curious your thoughts. pondering picking up a DS Adapt 7i …for science.

I’ve been down on the sim a bunch. Really enjoy both the DS Adapt and DS Max. Right now I’m leaning towards the DS Max as I need help with spin. I haven’t been able to get out on actual grass so will obviously not be making any decisions on these til I can, but both 7 irons will be going with me to Briggs Ranch for the Titleist event.
Like I said the Max and the added loft helps get my spin numbers in a better place and I’m not losing any distance form the DS Adapt. I do really like the DS Adapt. Both irons feel really good. My miss has a tendency to be a bit towards the toe and that miss really isn’t punished with these from what I’ve seen. I honestly think just seeing turf interaction will make my final decision.

Good stuff. Yeah definitely hard to make a decision from just sim time. Very cool that you are liking both. Forgiveness out on the toe is awesome to hear. Look forward to hearing more as you get them out in grass!
