Cobra OPTM Fairways Review

Cobra OPTM Fairway Woods and Hybrids

Today is an exciting day for Cobra Golf and its fans as the brand launches the highly anticipated OPTM series of metalwoods. While drivers often steal the spotlight, golfers who have added a Cobra fairway wood or hybrid to their bag in recent generations know Cobra brings plenty of excitement and innovation across its entire lineup. That tradition continues with a completely new family of fairway woods and hybrids.

When it came time to develop the OPTM lineup, Cobra listened to its customers, golfers who consistently want to hit the ball farther while also improving accuracy. With that feedback in mind, the OPTM range focuses on making the golf ball travel straighter without sacrificing speed. As it has done for the past several years, Cobra is introducing three fairway wood models, along with one hybrid lineup, under the OPTM name.

Cobra OPTM Tech Features

Adaptive POI Weighting

Cobra isn’t just launching its new OPTM metalwoods today—it’s also spotlighting the concept of POI (Product of Inertia). In recent years, MOI (Moment of Inertia) has become a buzzword across the industry, often used as the primary shorthand for forgiveness. With OPTM drivers, the discussion around POI involves both shaping and weighting, as James Miles explains in the driver release article.

For fairway woods and hybrids, POI centers on Adaptive POI Weighting, which Cobra says significantly improves accuracy and consistency of ball flight compared to previous generations. This includes adjustable sole weights as well as internal weight positioning that helps define the performance profile of each model.

H.O.T. Face

OPTM Hotface

Both OPTM fairway woods and hybrids benefit from Cobra’s H.O.T. Face Technology (Highly Optimized Topology). This technology uses specific patterns of face thickness to produce faster and more consistent ball speeds across the face. For this release, Cobra has incorporated 15 strategically placed “hot spots,” developed using machine learning.

Cobra’s fairway woods and hybrids performed well throughout the Darkspeed era, and with the continued refinement of H.O.T. Face technology, there’s little doubt this generation will deliver impressive ball speed as well.

FUTUREFIT33

Every model in the OPTM metalwood family features FUTUREFIT33, which has become the gold standard for adjustable hosels. With 33 settings, golfers can independently adjust loft and lie by up to ±2°. The adapter also allows for more precise tuning, down to 0.7° increments.

The fitting chart can look overwhelming at first glance, but Cobra makes it easier by including a QR code on each clubhead that links directly to a FUTUREFIT33 fitting guide. It’s a helpful way for golfers to dial in settings and optimize ball flight.

OPTM LS

OPTM LS is built for golfers seeking the fastest ball speeds and a more penetrating ball flight. With a 32mm face height, taller than both the X and Max models, the LS is a viable option off the tee while still remaining playable from the turf. The combination of a titanium face and a forward-positioned 40-gram internal weight makes the LS the lowest-spinning and longest fairway wood in the OPTM lineup. In fact, some Cobra staff members have joked that it’s “too fast” and “goes too far,” which is a problem most golfers would happily accept.

Cobra has incorporated AI-optimized POI weighting into the LS, aiming to make it not only a ball-speed powerhouse but also more accurate than the DS-Adapt LS. In internal testing, Cobra reports fairway-hit percentages off the tee increased by approximately 12%.

To help optimize performance from both the tee and the turf, the LS features three movable weights (14g, 11g, and 3g) positioned in the rear, heel, and toe. Paired with the FUTUREFIT33 hosel, the LS stands as the most adjustable fairway wood in the OPTM line

Cobra is releasing the OPTM LS fairway wood in three options: 3W (14.5°), 3HF (16°), and 5W (17.5°). Stock shaft offerings are Mitsubishi’s Kai’li series, with the Kai’li White 60 as the standard option for the LS.

OPTM X

Cobra OPTM X Fairway

For golfers who want a blend of Max-like forgiveness with LS-level speed and accuracy, the OPTM X is the answer. It features a mid-CG location and a 29mm face height, splitting the difference between the LS and Max models and creating a versatile profile.

OPTM X Fairway weights

The OPTM X also brings more adjustability than its predecessor, the DS-ADAPT X. While the DS-ADAPT X used a single rear 8g weight, the OPTM X adds a second weight port. The new model includes both a 3g and 11g weight, one positioned in the rear and the other toward the toe.

With more Cobra staff reportedly choosing X over LS, the additional weight port in a more forward location fits the intent of the model.

Cobra offers five head options in the OPTM X: 3W (15°), 3HF (16.5°), 5W (18°), 7W (21°), and 9W (24°), all paired with the Kai’li Blue 60. The big addition here is the 9W, which was previously exclusive to the Max line. With more golfers trending toward higher-lofted fairway woods, adding the 9W gives players more fitting flexibility.

OPTM Max

As the name suggests, OPTM Max is designed to be the most forgiving option in the fairway lineup, and Cobra expects it to be the best-selling model of the group.

The Max features the shallowest face height at 26.5mm, along with a more confidence-inspiring “pancake” shape that many golfers find easier to launch from the turf. It also has the most rearward and heel-biased center of gravity, helping players elevate the ball and promote a draw shape.

Even with that built-in draw bias, Cobra includes two interchangeable weights (14g and 3g) so golfers can fine-tune the amount of draw bias to better fit their swing.

OPTM Max is offered in 3W (15.5°), 5W (18.5°), 7W (21.5°), and 9W (24.5°), paired with the Mitsubishi Kai’li Red 50-gram shaft.

Max is also available in a women’s model featuring a different colorway and higher lofts: 3W (18.5°), 5W (21.5°), and 7W (24.5°), paired with a Mitsubishi Vanquish stock shaft.

Cobra OPTM HYBRIDS

No metalwood lineup is complete without hybrids. While many golfers are trending toward higher-lofted fairway woods, Cobra has refined its OPTM hybrids to make them easier to launch and more confidence-inspiring.

That starts with shaping. OPTM hybrids have grown slightly in overall footprint, a design choice meant to inspire confidence at address. Cobra has gradually increased hybrid size across its last three mainline releases. While they still aren’t as large as fairway woods, golfers who prefer a more compact hybrid may want to consider other options.

In addition to the larger profile, the hybrids feature a shallower face. This not only helps golfers deciding between a 9-wood and a 4-hybrid, but it also supports the easy launch and higher peak height Cobra is targeting with this line.

Cobra has also introduced a new internal weighting system optimized with AI assistance. The updated design shifts more mass toward the rear of the club to increase forgiveness, and more importantly, promote a higher launch angle. Cobra wants golfers to see a similarly high-flying ball when comparing an OPTM hybrid to an OPTM fairway wood. Combined with H.O.T. Face technology, the result is a fast, high-launching, and precise long-iron replacement.

The FUTUREFIT33 system is also compatible with the hybrids, allowing golfers to fine-tune ball flight more effectively than with most other adjustable hybrids on the market.

Cobra offers four OPTM hybrid lofts: 3H (19°), 4H (21°), 5H (24°), and 6H (28°). Each is paired with KBS PG Hybrid shafts weighing between 65 and 85 grams depending on flex.

The women’s OPTM hybrids include four head options beginning at 4H with the same lofts, plus a 7H (31°) added to the lineup. The women’s models are paired with a 55-gram KBS PG Hybrid shaft.
