Every year, as if by instinct, our senses begin to bring us back to the calming and familiar place we know as Augusta National Golf Club. It’s more than a geographical location or even a tournament, it’s a state of mind. We feel the gentle warmth of Spring and somehow smell the azaleas, even if we’ve never actually had the pleasure of taking in the scent. It’s the sign that we’ve made it, once again, to another golf season.
Another wonderful addition to the anticipation of the Masters, at least for the gear-obsessed, is the numerous limited edition releases we see from our favorite companies. Whether it’s apparel, accessories, or even golf clubs, the industry feels our excitement and wants to make sure they have something to commemorate the moment. Cobra Golf has carved out a reputation for regularly delivering unique editions of their drivers at key times throughout the year, and their Season Opener LE Darkspeed driver is a perfect example of that.

Balancing the somewhat menacing look of the Darkspeed with visions of dewy grass and the sounds of birds chirping is no easy feat. In fact, it’s probably not possible at all. Rather, the Season Opener LE Darkspeed brings to life the feeling of tension breaking as the quiet is interrupted by the crack of a well-struck tee shot. The sole displays symbols of Augusta National. Green, yellow, and shadowy azaleas decorate it, and a specially designed headcover is an even more present reminder.
Setting the Season Opener LE Darkspeed behind the ball rips away these genteel feelings, with the now-familiar outline of Cobra’s flagship driver inviting the golfer to swing hard and let it fly. Just a hint of green frames the head, along with some very subtle yellow highlights. If you’re not familiar with the Darkspeed yet, a great place to start would be the THP Forum, where it’s garnered over 2,000 posts since its release a little over two months ago.

With a heavy focus on aerodynamics, adjustability, and weight manipulation, the Darkspeed gets very high marks from our readers (and just about everywhere on social media) when it comes to providing ample forgiveness and tons of speed. The Season Opener LE is offered in the X and LS version of the head, in both 9 and 10.5 degrees of loft. It comes with an exclusive shaft, the Mitsubishi Tensei 1k Black, and the previously mentioned limited-edition headcover.
Priced at $649, the Cobra Season Opener LE Darkspeed Driver is available at cobragolf.com.
Oh that looks nice, I like that there’s a little ring of green on the back too so it’s not just the bottom that has the flash to it.
I think that looks great. I really like the subtle green highlights, very classy.
That looks great! Even if it is a bit too paradisy. Love the green accents.
I’m torn on this one because I love everything Augusta related. I agree it’s tough to keep the dark look and create a design worthy of the tournament we all love. Initially I was not a fan but the more I look at it the more I kind of like it.
Is the crown glossy vs matte in the standard head?

I like the look. I also like the headcover.
That’s a yes from me

That is a beautiful looking weapon right there…great look
I think I like this one. Sole gets a touch busy for me but definitely growing on me. If it is a matte crown ?
That is a good looking boom stick.
That is well done.
All in on the Masters edition!
Not really a fan of this one from afar it reminds me too much of the bottom of the smoke ai which I’m also not a big fan of the styling of.
One of the better Masters releases so far
I love the look, lot of details in there and while difficult to keep it dark and capture the Augusta charm I think they did it very well!
I like it

lol, thought you would be into that styling
I would hit that
I’ll a fan, but think the PTC would be my pick between the limited edition so far
I really like it, more so than the PTC released earlier. Must resist.
I do really like this one. Just enough green to make it look good but not over the top.
One of the better LE designs for a driver, love the look of this one
I don’t need it, I don’t need it, I don’t need it…
Like this better than the PTC but still not as good as original DS heads.
Cobra does the limited edition stuff better than anyone, and that’s a take I wont budge from. This is awesome.
I like the headcover on this one a little more than the head itself. I like the crown look a lot, but the sole is a little bland IMO. Like looking at this pic I think I’d prefer the headcover be subtle as is and the sole have this color of pink flowers instead of the grey. I do think this is a little more well rounded than this years PTC release.

I know I’m in the minority, but it’s a pass for me. I know I wouldn’t see the sole at address, however the overall design doesn’t do anything for me.
It’s not my favorite one they’ve done but it’s growing on me.
that’s one sweet looking driver!!!
I like it. The downplayed use of the yellow and green is cool.
I saw this earlier and I think I need to pull the trigger. My testing with DarkSpeed has gotten my attention and this design just checks all the boxes. not sure I can resist this one
I’m over limited releases in general.
I really like the look of this. A lot
That actually looks good.
Subtle and not “in your face”.
I really like this one. Headcover and the driver both look great. Cobra’s LE releases are usually really well done and this one does not disappoint.
It just doesn’t do it for me. Love the sole, don’t like the ring on the back of the crown.
Think about how awesome this head would look with one of those Hzrdus Hulk shafts. If I were man enough to use that shaft effectively, I may well be a buyer.

Not my favorite, but looks good
I like the headcover, but really like the standard version better.
this looks so good. love the subtle hints of color.

I think it looks awesome
I just love golf club names. Dark speed.how do I get that job naming?
