Here we go let’s kick off with some thoughts from Friday!
Friday Day 1
I honestly don’t even really know where to begin with this recap. The Data Experience was an event that was high on my list when it was announced a few years ago. When the field of THPers was expanded I entered but unfortunately was not one of the few lucky THPer’s that got selected. A few things peaked my interest, #1 the data insight into one’s game with Shot Scope and #2 it was taking place just a short hop and skip south of me at Hammock Beach two courses I have been wanting to play.
Fast forward to last week just a few days prior to the event when I saw myself tagged stating that I would be taking someone’s place due to illness. You never want to see that happen, but on the flip side I was taken over with Joy, excitement and a feeling of oh crap is my game ready for those courses started to set in.
Friday arrived and I was super anxious to get on the road to Palm Coast. I decided to take the day off and left in the morning. The drive in to the resort, as others have mentioned, is breathtaking. I arrived early and ran into @JB & @GolferGal had a bite to eat then set out to explore the resort. Just steps off the ocean it left for many views to be taken in. I watched several groups hit their approach shots in to 18…chuckled and thought what a beast of a hole.
Let’s talk amenities…pools, water slides, bars by the pool, a real grass mini nine hole putt putt course and bounce houses. So much fun to be had even though i was there to learn, golf and hang with THPer’s. I grabbed a local beer and watched the waves crash while waiting for the rooms to be ready.
I was anxious for the fellas to arrive which happened around 4-4:30 so I met them in the lobby for a quick intro. I had not talked to @dAS0 @Danimal or @TRyan leading up to this one. Funny the way THP experiences are as I felt like these guys were old college roommates! We had a few beverages and chatted about life, THP and our love for the game. It’s not often that you get to share a drink with a two time Grandaddy member, even if you are Finley’s rug mat. ?. That was pretty cool!
Fun facts:

We headed over to Atlantic Grill for dinner where we were to meeting @GavinwithaR1 & Jen (who I hope joins and begins posting here on THP). THP events are known for dinner spreads that leaves home cooking for the next week full of lack luster. There was no disappointment there from the Caymus & appetizers that quickly arrived after we sat down. That cauliflower was so darn good!!! Soon after that Gavin started handing out our swag in a bag that had “Shank” stamped on it. Smooth move!!! ?. As we dug in I was blown away. It just so happens that Jen took the time to snag some Swag from the Old Course. How cool is that and so unique! That headcover will not be coming out of the bag any time soon!!! The three other guys by this point had dipped their toes in the water with the V3 and I was ready to join in on the fun. Next we all received the Pro LX + which consists of the Pro LX range finder and the H4 (GPS Handheld). Give me data!!! Additionally we received a few different wristbands for the S3 and extra putter tag, Old Course hat and divot tool!
The knowledge shared at dinner was over the top. We kept firing questions and at no point did either of them say no we can’t answer that. Just great people are both Gavin and Jen. Not to mention I had the pleasure of sitting next to a Walker Cup participant! That doesn’t happen everyday! The banter was flying back and forth across the table and it was evident immediately that high stakes were riding on the competition.
For me it was interesting learning how data can be used to improve one’s game & where data can be used by courses if needed, to adjust where hazards are. After two and a half hours of questions we called it a night for dinner and the group of THPers headed out for a night cap.
We landed at Loggerheads after decided not to crash what appeared to be a wedding party. Would have been fun but not the type of attention we would ever bring upon THP. The chatter continued while @TRyan continued ordering Bud Lights and snuck off to what I guess he thought seemed like a good idea and ordered Fireball shots. What a great group of fellas to break bread with, enjoy learning about data and teeing it up at The Ocean Course & Conservatory! We headed back what had to feel late for these guys after early mornings and called it a night!
Hats off to @JB & @GolferGal for kicking this one of with a good start with dinner at a magical place called Hammock Beach!
Next up Day 2…

I’m still smiling from this event. Thank you for setting up this amazing trip! There were so many memorable moments and I am grateful that I was a part of this experience.
But we don’t talk about hole 18.

Saturday Day 2 – Knowledge/Data Instruction – Putting & Chipping
Sleep never seems to come easy the night before a THP event. I tossed and turned after going to bed around midnight on Friday and woke up well before the alarm decided to go off. When you foot steps away from the ocean you never want to miss watching that sun come up, so I headed down to the beach. It definitely did not disappoint having the entire beach to yourself. It is times like these when you just count your blessings and thank the man above. I strolled down along the nine fairway and thought to myself I wonder how many golf balls make it out here. To my surprise I found only one. I made my way back towards the steps that take you up towards the 18th green and I ran in to the fellas. You could tell we were all a bit exhausted still, could have been due to the variety of spirits that we wet our palates with or just the lack of sleep. ? I am going with the later just for the sake that I can.
I grabbed a cup of joe and was pleasantly surprised how good it was. @JB warned me I wouldn’t be disappointed. Great thing for @Danimal as there were free coffee refills until noon. We all headed to the Snack Shop at the turn for breakfast where I had the Long Drive wrap. Chatted with Erik and watched the massive group of ladies getting ready to tee off. After breakfast and hydration we headed back to relax prior to our meet up on the range at 12.
It was time for me to get the clubs loaded up with ShotScope tags and pair the H4 and set “My Bag”. Such a simple process that I will dive deeper into in the respective threads. After that I ended up heading to hang out at the pool and catch some rays. Had I not found out a day before the event I would have brought the surf ???? board and taught these guys how to surf. ?
It felt like eons waiting for noon to arrive…it finally was time so I threw on the threads, loaded up the bag and headed over to the range. Gavin said the night before we would learn about data, but I did not think that meant golf lessons that drove the data we were going to dive in to. Gavin and Jen had several stations set up and we headed over to the putting green first. They both explained what the data said about a 5HC when putting from both 30’ & 24’ respectively. The data shows that from 30’ the within a 6’ radius is what should be arrived for and from 20’ within a 3’ radius. We then proceed to roll outs from different areas on the green from said distances to see how we preformed. We then proceeded over to another cup where Gavin asked us if we were a Linear or Non-Linear person.
Linear v non-linear putting: Thank you @GavinwithaR1
Two different green reading and visualization methods.
Non-linear golfers see the putt breaking across the green, rolling over and around the slopes, the ball not in a straight line. Personally, this is the way that I choose to approach the game. On the other hand, linear golfers will see the overall break and putt to a point nearer to the hole. When comparing these two styles of play, it is good to note that neither is right or wrong. Both approaches have their merits. However, it is important to understand which type you are.
There are several YouTube videos out that can help based on the type of putter that you are.
Next we headed over to work on chipping and discussed the data related to chipping for a 5HC and leave distances. We then hit chips where Gavin and Jen provided instruction to us on set up and how to hit different shots. Gavin noticed that I was decelerating when hitting chips so adjusted my grip and how I addressed the ball. He noticed that I was delofting the club which caused me to try and flip the ball. He instructed me to choke down on the club (almost to the end of the grip) and align my thumbs running down the shaft. This would help with me accelerating through the swing. What a difference and will be implementing into my practice moving forward.
On to bunker work where Jen spent a good 30-45 mins with us practicing different types of lies and how to approach in a bunker. We hit downhill, uphill and plugged lies. What she failed to work on where bunker shots in massive footprints ?.
Overall I felt this was if not the best part, pretty darn close of the experience. I walked over to the driving range with a lot of information to comprehend and to implement into how I practiced and then take to the course.
We headed over to the range to get ready to tee of. Watching Gavin and Jen was a beauty to behold. Swings as smooth as butter! Every swing and contact with the ball was crisp. That was fun having the opportunity to watch, if so much so that the starter and several others on the range made the comment, “whoever is playing against the female is going to get it handed to them!” ?
My warm up session felt great even after making some changes to my set up and addressing of the ball.
We all grabbed a few beverages and wraps (the tuna wrap was fantastic) and proceeded to load up in the carts.
It was time for the Ocean Course…

Afternoon – Day 2
When we got to the range, we were met by JB, Gavin, and Jen. We set our bags down and were told to meet them on the putting green. Gavin and Jen had set up some putting spots and marked circles for different “leaves” for 2 different length putts amongst 5 handicappers. I have to say seeing these circles
was quite possibly one of the most eye-opening things of the entire weekend for me. I spend SO much time focusing on making putts, regardless of length, instead of focusing on getting them inside a specific circle. Gavin and Jen discussed strategies for navigating these longer putts, and how focusing on pace ultimately ensures
that you keep your putts within a makeable range to avoid 3-putts. All four of us went around the different areas practicing the putts and taking in tips from Gavin and Jen.
Once we finished with that, Gavin introduced us to the concept of linear vs. non-linear thinking when it comes to lining up a putt. I am a very linear person, so I personally benefit from using the line on my ball to help me with my putting. Gavin gave me a tip regarding my putting stance to ensure that I am a bit wider and avoid
falling back into my heels on my putts, and it is something I worked on all weekend, and have continued to work on here back at home.
After the putting, we moved to chipping. In a similar story, they set up targets as well as circles in relation to where 5 handicappers have their chips finish on average. I worked quite a bit here with Gavin on my approach to chipping. Gavin simplified EVERYTHING for me, explaining that it was okay to use a single club around the green,
but that I needed to focus on manipulation of the shaft angle and my feet to hit different kinds of shots (low, mid, high) depending on the situation. Previously, I had really only chipped with my hands and shaft very far forward, but he showed me the three different ways to approach a chip, and by the end of the weekend he noted I was making
great strides on my chipping.
We finally moved into a warm-up session. I was admittedly a bit nervous, even though it was my 7th or 8th THP event, the nerves never dissipate for me. I hit a few shots, loaded up my cart, and Gavin and I headed to the first tee.
The Ocean course was fantastic. As was mentioned throughout the day, the pace of play was REALLY slow, it took us nearly 6 hours to play 18, but it never felt that way.
My Saturday was a bit of a mixed bag. I parred the first 2 holes, and then the wheels fell off a bit for a while, I was getting a bit off-course with my driver, and the course punished me for it. I settled into the round a bit on the back 9 and actually ended up with 2 natural birdies over the final 9 holes. Playing with both Gavin
and Jen was very eye-opening. They are both incredible golfers, but also incredible people. They offered tips, helped read putts, and spent the time talking through how they were approaching each of their shots in a way that made me feel like I was constantly learning things.
After finishing the round, we had a 2 Up lead and were feeling good. We headed back to our rooms to drop off the clubs and it was straight to Loggerheads for dinner.
Dinner was again fantastic. Some great appetizers, a smash burger, and watching @dAS0 kill a root beer float. We said our goodbyes as we were all EXHAUSTED and headed back to our rooms.
I packed my stuff, took a shower, and think I was asleep before my head even hit the pillow!

You are right. It was the fastest 6 hour round ever wasn’t it? I think it is because the scenery and the company, but overall it moved okay.
Day 3
Day 3 was an EARLY start. I was up around 5:30 so I could finish packing and get ready for the morning round. @dAS0 and I met @Danimal at the car around 6:45 AM and headed to the Conservatory for our final round. We met the crew at the course, got checked in, and headed down to the range.
It was when I got to the range that I noticed we were all getting ATTACKED by bugs. You couldn’t hit more than 2-3 balls before you were in misery, so I hit about 10 shots, rolled a couple of putts, and grabbed a quick breakfast wrap prior to the round to get away from the bugs.
On day 3 we decided to stick with no swapping of the Shot Scope folks, so it was me, @GavinwithaR1, and @Danimal for the full 18. I was a bit nervous with such an abbreviated warm-up session but I proceeded to stripe my first drive in front of everyone, hit the green, and then promptly 3-putt. It was a blast watching
Gavin hit from the “Gavin” tees. The highlight for me had to be the 225 Yard Par 3 with an entirely blind shot and a tree about 10 yards in front of him. He grabbed a 3-iron and was able to lift it up OVER the tree, miss the green just right, and still get up and down. It was simply incredible. Similar to Sunday, Gavin, Dan, and I
sort of ham and egged it around the course, with the majority of the work coming from Gavin.
We chatted a lot about Shot Scope, the event, as well as life, and really enjoyed ourselves. While the match was INCREDIBLY close the entire weekend, I didn’t focus as much on that as I did just taking in the entire experience. Continually asking Gavin what he was thinking about with a shot, or how he might approach something on the course.
Even though he forced me to go for every Par 5 in two, it was always interesting to hear his feedback on WHY that was the right choice.
We ended on 18 and had a bit of time to watch Jen and her team finish up, and they even had a putt to tie it, which @mmaynard narrowly missed.
Once the last putt dropped, we all shook hands, Gavin gave Jen a bit of “pelters” and we headed back to the clubhouse for lunch.
Over lunch a lot of stories were shared, a lot of thanks were given, and we parted ways so Dan, Craig, and I could shower and head to the airport.
The departure is always a sad one. It was a long travel day, I got home at about 2:30 AM, but it was all worth it for the experience.
I will throw another post together thanking everyone, but to the forum, and all of the people involved, thank you. It was really an eye-opening experience, and one I am glad to hear will live on into the future.

I had to save the best for last.
@JB – Not sure where to start. I have been extremely fortunate to be a part of a number of events with THP. From the early gatherings to a bigger event like the one at PGA National, to 2 effing Grandaddy’s, you continuously raise the bar. I don’t know how you do it, but I am happy you do. The entire weekend you were cracking jokes, enjoying yourself, and ensuring we were doing the same. I cannot thank you enough for all that you do around here and look forward to seeing you again soon.
@GolferGal – Morgan, it was great seeing you again! I know we have chatted quite a bit in the Fitness and Nutrition threads, but keep up the great work, I mentioned to JB that you looked absolutely incredible! I look forward to continuing to watch your progress and stealing a few tips from you 😀
@GavinwithaR1 / Jen (Get on the forum) – You two simply rock. You came to the USA all the way from Scotland, in large part to play golf with 4 random internet guys. From the moment we met you all, you were nothing but kind and generous. From all of the Shot Scope swag to Jen bringing us stuff from the OLD COURSE?! It was truly a treat. You guys are incredible golfers and even more fierce competitors. Thank you both for all of the tips, I cannot wait to see the analysis of my game after I get some more rounds in.
@Danimal – My partner! Thanks for helping me navigate those 36 holes man. We hit some good shots, some bad shots, and even had some really tough breaks, but we smiled through the whole thing. Hope to get up to Saint Louis and get some golf in with you sometime soon!
@dAS0 – Craig! My roommate. Thanks for sharing a villa with me. It was awesome watching you bomb that driver, you got a heck of a game, and you are an even better guy. Stay in touch!
@mmaynard11 – Matt, I cannot believe this was our first time meeting each other! You are every bit as good of a guy in person as you are on the forum. Thanks for filling in last minute, you were a fantastic addition to the group. Stay in touch!

It is all about risk vs. reward. Many of the Par 5s at both courses had trouble everywhere, water, bunkers, OB.
Gavin was of the mindset that you can hit a bad shot with EVERY club, especially with someone like me, a 13-15 handicapper. It is all about picking a shot, mitigating as much risk as you can, and owning the shot.

This is a better well thought out answer.
Yes, data supports being closer to the hole.
These courses had trouble at layups and by the green. As you said, you can hit a bad shot with any club (we all can), so go with something that gets you closer.

Part of the reason I’ve been pulling driver more is because of comments by @GavinwithaR1 . End of last year and I was playing it safe way too often, leaving myself longer irons into the greens. Driver was a strength, and I kept it in the bag. But this year I’ve pulling it more, as long as the hole allows. Water, doglegs, etc affect when I pull the driver, but narrow-ish fairways don’t scare me off like they did.

This is so true! Thats why I hate laying up. Its like pulling 5 iron off a tee and then hitting it into the bushes when you could have easily done that with driver haha

Absolutely. I remember on 18 on the Conservatory, I hit a good drive, had about 240 to the green and had a 6-iron in my hand to lay up near the green. @GavinwithaR1 told me to grab 3 wood and aim just right of the green (water on the left). I took a lazy swing, OTT and it went into the water up near the green. However, he reminded me, that I could have done the EXACT same thing with a 6-iron, and had to drop much further back.
It didn’t workout in that case, but it is really about having a plan and owning that plan.

Gavin was of the mindset that you can hit a bad shot with EVERY club, especially with someone like me, a 13-15 handicapper. It is all about picking a shot, mitigating as much risk as you can, and owning the shot.
I am coming around to this as well. I used to lay up on most par 5’s, now in the last 1-2 years I’ve started going for the green (or for a fairway wood if I can’t reach) in every case unless that club puts me in a forced carry type hazard. Cool to see that approach is corroborated by data though!

Absolutely. Gavin said the data shows unequivocally that being as close to the green as possible is best.

Were there any qualifiers to that? Or is it pretty much just as long as there’s not a hazard you’re going to land directly in?

I would defer to @GavinwithaR1 on this one. He didn’t go too far in-depth on the specifics, other than to say all of the data they have supports getting as close as possible to the green.

No worries dude, just curious!
I also want to say that regrettably due to a lot of other stuff I had going on this weekend, I really wasn’t able to follow along much at all, but looks like everyone had an amazing time and the courses were BEAUTIFUL! I’m sure Gavin and Jen melted a little bit in that Florida heat compared to the homeland, but with scenery like that right!?!? And so glad you guys got to experience it and get some serious knowledge, and some sweet data devices to boot! Just sorry you guys got stuck behind that super slow group!o_O

Thank Yous

@TRyan it was a pleasure spending the weekend with you and everyone else. The bar has been set high for future events! It was incredible in every way!
Day 2 – The Ocean Course
If the views from the range and practice facility were a glimpse into the views we would see on the course it was evident we were in for a treat. It was decided that we would pair up with our Team Captain’s for the first nine and then make a switch on the back nine. This allowed for us to spend time with both Gavin and Jen out on the course. A group picture was snapped and Team Jen went off first.
First tee shots at THP Experiences don’t get easier with the more experiences that you play in. You just get up there and swing and hope for the best. I pulled my tee shot left and out of bounds. Definitely not the start I was hoping for. Watching Jen swing was entrancing for sure. She just hits the ball a long way! @dAS0 and I struggled a bit out of the gate, but Jen was there to provide the shots to keep us rolling. @TRyan said it best but both Jen and Gavin were there to offer tips on how to play certain shots and read putts on the green. I found this provided great insight on where what I thought might be the best play wasn’t really. The conversation out there was what makes these experiences special. We talk golf, life and most importantly data. Since I was using the H4 Jen was there to assist in certain situations on the best way to perform pin collect.
On the third hole the game started to settle in and Hit some decent golf shots. We had slow group in front of us but honestly I don’t think it affected us much. The views on the course and conversation are the day fly by. On the fourth hole the Par 3 I used the tips Gavin provided and chipped on in there close.
The match was back and fourth and we relied on Jen early but overall think the entire team contributed on the day. We arrived to 8 & 9 and just wow. The backdrop hitting into the Ocean was a Wow factor!

@dAS0 and I learned several new terms to insert into our daily vocabulary such as “juice”, “zap the bush” and had to explain what a pop was. ?.
We had a lead rolling into 8 but ended up AS after nine.
At nine we switch groups and @dAS0 & I got to watch @GavinwithaR1 just pound the ball from the back tees. The ball just sounds different off the club. On 10 I had him by 4 yds, but then realized he tee’d off 100 yards behind me. ?. 10 did me in as it seemed every time I hit a good shot it tracked to a bunker. As most know from following along I was probably in a bunker on 80% of the holes this weekend. I think Gavin willed my ball into the bunker more times than i can recall, however it was in all good fjnTypically I am a really good bunker player, but unfortunately that was not the case this weekend. We plugged away and the scoring went back and fourth then we arrived at the 14th hole. @JB had just told us he witnessed someone card a 14 after being in the fairway off the tee. Great way to pump up a group teeing off. The three of us pull our shots left, but all were still in play. Gavin and @dAS0 went up to look for their balls then moved behind a tree to let me play up. My lie was in sand l and I had tree trouble in front of me. I grabbed 5i and the sand closed down the club face and the ball zipped off the club face and went left. I did not even have time to yell FORE and just hoped that I didn’t kill anyone. Not Gavin and Craig said your ball just whipped two inches at head height in front of you. I think other comments were…

That is when I was looking for where my ball ended up that I saw the snake. As you can guess I ran very quickly in the opposite direction.
Finally we made it to the final stretch of holes…talk about 15, 16, 17 & 18. Those holes are tough! We won a few holes back, but @TRyan was dropping net birdies behind us that took them up. We won’t talk about 18, but I think I hit one in the ocean, then into the resort pool, but sank a long putt to end the day. Such a fun day out there with both Jen and Gavin!!!

We ended up 2dn after 18.
@JB was out there enjoying his self and always there with a good comment & to provide laughs!!!
After our rounds we headed back to our rooms, dropped off the clubs and headed to Loggerheads for dinner. All of us were exhausted from the long day on the course and the heat, but that did not stop the conversation between the group. We learned more about what Shot Scope was doing with data, saw the back end of how a course is mapped and what Jen is working with data from rounds played at The Old Course. Truly remarkable stuff and look forward how they continue to evolve and rive to make golfers understand data and improve their game.
Once again dinner was great along with the apps. It was fun watching the only guy that ordered dessert finish that float. @GolferGal joined us and it is always great to see her smiling face at these experiences. Thank you for all you do!!!
We all called it a night then headed back to get sleep as Sunday would be an early morning. I ended up going through the thread, looking at my data and then dosed off at 1:30am.
Fun Facts:
– Jen’s short game is plain stupid good
– Jen does not like bugs
– Gavin can crush a ball…carried 334yds
– @dAS0 can hold a golf pose!

And let me tell you… he takes that to heart in his game.
I know Gavin said you should hit driver to get as close to the green as possible to you guys. What if shot scope says you are not a good chipper but have better success say 100 yards out. Would you take that data and play to 100 yards or just hit as close to the green as you could get? All hypothetical of course, since you would probably try and shore up chipping with the data.
Day 3 – The Conservatory Course
Sunday morning came early with the alarm going off at 6:15am although I bet, I was awake well before that. I packed up my things the night before, took a quick shower and headed out the door as we were meeting at the course by 7am. The drive into The Conservatory Course is through a neighborhood and I caught a glimpse of a few holes as I navigated to the clubhouse. For those not aware The Conservatory Course is about a 10 min drive from Hammock Beach Resort. The Conservatory clubhouse is magnificent and contains a lot of historic memorabilia on the course, a nice pro shop, and snack shop. The two courses are like night and day with what I felt as the Conservatory being a tougher course, which could have been to the environmental conditions. Lack of breeze. The views were not at scenic, but the course reminded me of Pinehurst for some reason.
It was a humid morning and based on living in Florida new that the No-See-Um’s would be out. Well, that was an understatement. As I was walking to the range it was like a swarm of bees taking over. You could barely manage getting a few swings in without them having their breakfast…and that breakfast being you. I hit a few shots and was comfortable how I was feeling so called it a day and headed over to roll a few putts. It was funny watching Gavin and Jen with a look of what the heck is going on here on their face.
I grabbed a few items from the pro shop then met the rest of them down by the snack stop to grab a bite to eat. We all went with the Long Drive wrap, we all sat around continuing our conversation from the night before. Laughter was had and then we loaded up and headed to the first tee box.
Team Gavin was off first and we made the decision to remain in our team groups for the entire 18. @GavinwithaR1 was playing what are now referenced as “The Gavin Tees” while the rest of us would alternate from the Level IV tees and Level V tees (Par 5 only). Gavin was playing the course from 7800 yds, which @Danimal & @TRyan had the pleasure of witnessing.

For Team Jen it is always tough following Jen after she just pipes a drive down the middle of the fairway while making it look effortless. I stepped up and cranked one down the middle and said alright…I’m feeling good. I ended up sticking me second shot around 20′ and walked away with par. However, Jen stuck her approach within 3′ and when it hit, I thought it was going to drop in for a 2. The No-See-Um’s were so bad on her birdie putt one flew right into her nose as she was making her stroke. Remember we were 2Dn after day 1 and we cut right into that lead on the first hole. The second hole is where things got interesting. My second shot into the green, my back foot slipped from the dew, and I pushed my approach right. From where I was at I thought it went into…yes another bunker, but unfortunately it was plugged into the side of the slope just outside of the bunker. I had no stance and kept sliding back down into the bunker and my shot…well it dribbled right back into the trench I dug with my foot. Lone behold @dAS0 stuck one on the green close and he rolled in a putt to make it AS after 2. We continued to ham and egg it from there on out on the front nine and at one point took the lead 1up. I struggled finding once again every bunker on the course but was having the time of my life out there. I had a few holes where I was able to contribute and rolled in some lengthy putts. @dAS0 was having a day with his driver with one going that way and the other going a different direction but was able to hit some clutch second shots whenever he was in trouble. He even hit a ball a few inches in the water right from the muck. Way to be a trooper even with wearing a white shirt.
To be continued because I surpassed the 10,000 allotted characters…
The heat and humidity out there made it feel like the wheels were falling off and a very much different feeling without the wind off the ocean. We made our way to the back and were in prime position to win a hole, but just couldn’t get any putts to drop. We headed to 11 where I hit a good drive but was still 70yds behind Jen. I just had to chuckle to myself. I hit a good shot that leaked just a little and yep right into another bunker. I hit my best bunker shot of the week and followed it up by rolling in a par for net birdie. On 13 I did the same thing…good drive, approach shot just leaked over the back of the green which left me a downhill lie with a green that was running away. I took an extra minute and thought back to the lessons I received from Gavin the day before. Choked down, kept the shaft pointing at my belt buckle and swung in line with where my feet were pointed. I hit the chip perfectly and it ended up one rotation from rolling in. Par net birdie. Coming down the stretch we knew it was going to come down to the wire. On 16 I was in perfect position to put one in close and didn’t have enough club and tried to over swing and yep…SHANK right.
Through all of this Jen kept her composure and just kept building @dAS0 and I up. She was so generous with her assistance on both days I feel forever grateful & hope one day she is found posting on THP!
On 17 we all found the green and once again had a chance to make it AS, but we all left our birdie putts short and walked away 1DN headed in to 18. By this point we all had some lazy swings and Jen took a swipe with Driver, looked at @dAS0 and me and said, “Well I guess that is what it feels like not hitting the center of the club”. The laughter that ensued probably could be heard by Team Gavin hitting their approach shots into the green. I found the fairway and Craig wanted one last flirt with the vegetation on the left to see if he could encounter and reptiles. Jen hit her 2nd shot into the par 5 in the water short of the green with left me deciding whether to lay up or go for it. I had a long way in so decided to hit a layup and pushed it way right. I was popping so knew that I was not out of the hole and had 120yds into a steady breeze. Pulled 9i and dropped it 12′ left of the pin. Again, here we sit with a putt to win the hole and finish AS. I didn’t feel any nerves, but a part of me did not trust myself or the line that Jen gave me. I felt the putt was downhill a bit more than it was and left it two rotations short. I felt pummeled leaving my teammates down.
We shook hands and commented how darn fun that was. The drive into the clubhouse had me thinking about that putt. It would have been awesome to end in a tie after the weekend we just had, but like we all say…did anyone actually lose? Not in my book. We all stayed to have lunch, shared more laughs and stories and just soaked it all in. It wasn’t until I sat down next to Jen that she looked at me and said…”How in the world did you leave that putt short?”. I just shook my head and @JB said what your response should have been is, “Why did you hit your approach in the water?” And from this point we all knew what the word “pelters” meant as Jen asked if we were getting pelters by all those who picked Team Jen.
We all say our thanks and goodbyes to what will live as one of the most informative THP Experiences about Data.
Jen – You were quiet but fierce. Your love for the game of golf and helping others is a sight to be seen. I appreciate all of the kind words and tips you provided while navigating the two courses. I am excited about the work that you are doing for Shot Scope and hope to see you make a return trip next year for redemption!!! I look over at my Old Course swag on a daily basis and can’t say thank you enough!
@GavinwithaR1 – it was a pleasure and can’t begin to thank you enough for an over-the-top weekend. From the instructions around the practice green to the data that will improve us as golfers was fantastic. I am a true Shot Scope believer and can’t wait to get more rounds on the course. It was fun watching you navigate the course and the tips on how we should navigate the course. If I ever make it to Scotland be sure that I will be reaching out! Do the same if you are ever in the Florida area.

@dAS0 – My partner! It was a pleasure meeting you and I think you rocked your 1st THP Experience! Hands down a genuine person! You hit the ball a mile and have a flat stick that will have you dropping strokes. Get a handle on where your ball is going off the driver and I see good things. We battled but unfortunately came up 1 putt short. Literally. If I am ever in the Philly area, I will be bringing the clubs along for a round of golf.
@TRyan – The legend! I wish we all had the energy you portray! Just smiles all the time and full of questions. Enjoyed it truly and hope that we get another round in the future. I think I’ve had my share of Bud Light for quite some time!
@Danimal – So is it Dee-Animal or the Danimal Yogurt? Still not clear on that one. It was fun having another old guy in the house to share stories that the other two would have glossed looks on their face. St. Louis is always a stopover when I visit one of my clients. We need to get a round on the books…I will be up there mid- June.
@JB – I still can’t comprehend how your mind visualizes these Experiences but man they just keep getting better each time. Appreciate the amount of time that you put into these alongside with the CEO @GolferGal coordinating and keeping you within your bounds. Heck maybe she allows to exceed your bounds.
As far as the Shot Scope ProLX+ you will see me posting my reviews in the respective threads. Since I was a late arrival, I received the H4 and have nothing but positive things to say. However, since I love options I am pondering hard on the S3. The ProLX has kicked out my other rangefinder out of the bag and actually out of the house. My neighbors are ecstatic they have new devices.
@mmaynard11 Your write up was fantastic to read. The memories of the good and bad have me smiling if not laughing. Yes, we both had opportunities to tie up the match; me on 17 (just ‘slid’ it by), you on 18, but even ending the weekend 1 down, I am thrilled with how it played out. It was so much fun that even when I followed you beach side on 18 at the Ocean Course, I was still happy. Not due to the shot of course, but the comradery was amazing for the whole weekend. After the rounds, all teams could get together and just reminisce about the day. The food involved certainly helped, and @JB – that wine on night 1 was amazing and this is coming from a non-wine drinker.
As is the case with all golfers, yes, I could have played better. Did I hit shots that were horrendous? Not really. My game has always been wild off the tee with good rounds being determined by recovery shots. Now that I have numbers to look at, I hope to work on my tee shots to get better. Step one was to reduce or lose my slice. 75% of my misses were left so I think that goal has been met. Now it is time to narrow down my misses. Jen was very helpful, talking to me about my address and line when on the tee box. She also reminded me to focus on proximity to the pin when putting. I recall our chat when I had the 80 footer that had to crest a ridge before breaking towards the hole. Her advice was fantastic and I look forward to her breaking down the numbers once I have a few more rounds posted on ShotScope.
Other than a few shots that were bad contact, a lot of my penalties were good shots that went too far left. I ran out of room. I can’t say I hit the ball too far since Gavin was near by to show us all the true meaning of a long drive. I swear even some of my best drives were “cute’ compared to his and Jen’s drives. Jen had trouble missing the center of the fair way. Using the ‘last shot’ feature, it was common to see 280-290 yards when Jen was hitting her next shot. It was very helpful watching her swing. I took mental notes and will keep working on things this year in the hopes of becoming more consistent.
Memorable moments:

If anyone joins a THP event that involves @mmaynard11 @Danimal @TRyan , you will have a great time. It’s kind of a given when @JB is the host. He was a a lot of fun to be around and gave good advice. I appreciate you telling us where to aim. I just need to hit towards where I aim.
Lastly, those who become a part of the Data Experience part deux: Too Data Too Furious. I cannot wait to hear the commentary about playing with @GavinwithaR1 and @Jenjointheforum. It’s something you need to witness for yourselves.

I knew where we went wrong…you should have been teeing off first!
This was well said and I’m sitting here just chuckling to myself.
Awesome writeup @mmaynard11
The memories although recent came right back to me.
Love the write ups guys! Some of my favorite part of experiences is hearing from those who went through it relive it in writing! There’s always stuff that comes up that wasn’t mentioned in the thread and it’s awesome to get that glimpse in to the event from your eyes!
Also this weekend was the first time I’ve ever heard of a ” No-See-Um”

They are worse than mosquitoes…by the time you know one is biting you it’s all over. They are deadly.
I think Gavin might have said that about a few of our drives. ?

I met these tiny monsters in the Philippines. They’re no joke!
Love reading these write ups guys. Know the feeling that rushes back with all the fond memories in a event and you guys did such a great job with this one.

I’m still scratching. It’s like I have fleas.
…and y’all that I was done…nope!
A huge part of these experiences are those following along here on the forum. Little do you know but the participation goes a hell of a long way! I absolutely enjoy engaging with folks while we are out on the course…sometimes depending on how I’m playing it will ebb and flow. So speaking for all of us it was greatly appreciated!
Which now brings me to a little contest for my appreciation.
Thank you THP members!!!
