Drills with the Blingo Queen

Welcome to The Hacker’s Paradise! I’m excited to have the opportunity to share a few golf tips with you that I use to improve my game while in the off-season and on tour. So you may be asking, “who are you?”. My name is Charlotte Campbell and I recently competed on The Golf Channel’s Highway 18 with my brother Rob. We were fortunate enough to win! But, I’ve also been playing on the Duramed Futures Tour for the last 2 years, and I feel like I have some good stuff to share with you! Take it or leave it, try it if you want, and feel free to let me know how it goes!

So to start, I figured I would think over the numerous pro-ams I’ve played in and consider what the weakest part of the amateur’s games would be. Probably putting… Pro-ams are great because everyone can participate and feel like they are contributing. However, if the putts aren’t falling, it can make for a long day….

Try out one of my favorite putting drills:
As long as I can remember, a putt that was left short has never gone in. So, to help work on speed pick out one hole on your putting green and walk off 7 paces above the hole (mark it with a tee), and then 7 paces below the hole (mark it with a tee). This is equivalent to about 20 feet which is an average putt you’ll have on a day to day basis. Take 3 balls and start at either tee. You MUST putt every ball past the hole, but within your putter length. If you do not do both of these, you must start over at zero. Once you have finished the 3, move on to the next tee and repeat. The goal is to get 10 putts in a row; 3 from the first tee, 3 from the 2nd tee, then 3 again from the first, and your last putt from your final tee. Sounds easy right? Give it a go! I’ve had to repeat 5 or 6 times before I was able to get 10 in a row. It’s a fantastic drill because it forces you to get great speed, but also gives your putt a chance to go in. I’ve realized that your best bet is to try and make the putt, not just get it “within the putter length”. Focus on your target, and you’ll be amazed what you can do when you set your mind to it. Do the drill on a breaking putt too if you prefer!

This is a simple drill that can be done before you go play or if you are out practicing sometime. Good luck!

Charlotte Campbell
