Utility irons are all the rage right now, combining more of a classic look with modern technology compared to their hybrid counterparts. Cobra is releasing their KING Utility in two versions today, and like their FORGED TEC irons that hit the market this year, they nailed the looks.
Who uses a utility? Players looking for control and precision on longer shots including off the tee. A classic muscle shape delivers on the aesthetics, while the wide sole and hollow body provide the stability, but there is quite a bit of tech under the hood, so let’s take a look.
Low CG is often mentioned, but what’s it for? Having a center of gravity below the ball will help get the ball up in the air and when we are speaking of lofts starting in the teens, that is not a bad thing. Think penetrating flight that gets up, rather than quick rising and spinny.
Cobra continued with their PWRSHELL FACE here, which is designed to expanded the ideal impact area and get better ball speeds when you miss. And we do miss as the clubs get longer.
Adjustability is back in the KING Utility and we are thankful. Cobra MyFly8 Technology, which is a mouthful to say that there are eight adjustable loft settings. Great for fitting, but also to dial in trajectory and making sure you can nail your gaps.
COBRA CONNECT is still included, powered by Arccos Caddie, the Smart Grips have embedded sensors to track and record your round. Does it work? Check out the reviews by users on the THP Forum that continue to use it and post their thoughts.
The KING Utility is available in both variable (standard) and ONE Length options and if you ever want to have a blast at a golf store, grab the ONE Length KING Utility and take some swings. It is mind bending, that your 7 iron length club has adjustable lofts and is giving you tons of distance and forgiveness.
Before anybody asks, the shaft info is here. The standard and ONE Length versions gives you the option of the KBS $-Taper Lite in Stiff or Regular flexes and if you want graphite, the offering is the Project X Catalyst 80. The graphite option is available in the trio of R, S or X flex.
The Lofts
2 Utility: 16-20 degrees (RH Only)
3 Utility: 18-21 degrees (RH or LH)
4 Utility: 21-24 degrees (RH or LH)
ONE Length: 3, 4 or 5 Utility available

I’ve played both 790 UDI’s, srixon u85, g410 crossover, new level 4995….. only hit 3 balls with this today and it’s better than them all. Off the tee box I didn’t even use a tee. Easy to elevate but stayed on a low piercing flight that I like from this spot in my bag
I was in a rush so didn’t add it as “2i” (re paired it as 5w to keep data)
Last pic is a bad angle but it’s from that 10th hole won’t the 2i (5w) going 268. 3w was only 1 yard ahead of the 2i

I’d obsess the shaft was not in proper alignment and would have to pull the tip and get the shaft aligned in the proper orientation.
I’d rather have properly oriented shafts in clubs and the loft and lies tweaked than all these clunky-ish adapters.
It’s too big box golf store for me, besides. It was meant to bypass many small biz in the industry, unfortunately.
Get the 4UT and it will do just that from what I am seeing. It will be higher launching and be softer landing into greens as well.
Do you still have the Epic Forged 5i?? I had the epic 4i for a brief moment and didnt care for it. I believe it was at 18* while my 2u is 17.5. I love the ability to adjust the Forged Tec utility and it will be an awesome club for me
I hit one about an inch behind the ball yesterday, took a divot, and it still flew out there only 12 yards shorter than the other 2 times I used it
It showed up at my door this afternoon. It’s the 4, with a Catalyst 80 graphite shaft. I put it in the bag and headed to the course, not even a practice swing.
My home course has a long par 3 on the front 9. Today, my rangefinder told me the hole was about 211 yards out. I thought, what the heck, let’s give it a shot. I didn’t know if I would get it there. It launched HIGH. It felt great, just like the Forged Tec irons. I ended up about 20 feet back of the pin, on line. This fits a spot perfectly in my bag. I am stoked.
I still have it. Sorry, I just saw this.
The King Utility is easier to use for me than the Epic Forged 5i. It also is a bit longer.
I would back all of this up.
Plus, feels better than the Epic Forged by a longshot as well.
very easy club to hit and probably most forgiving utility ive played…with the 2i its the lowest/flattest launch off the tee and I love it. Not sure if its the club head or the steelfiber in there but that combo is so fun to hit
I also love a 2 utility bc its my go to club for punch outs behind/under the trees lol
I had them put a Elevate 95 S300 shaft in for me.
a bit more inconsistent for me than theFT 4i – higher launch though.
It’s very streak for me
I turned it down to 21° seems to lose shots more right which makes sense. Definitely gives me confidence at address.
One shot today – missed the target but distance was ??? 226 yards on Cobra Connect
Bang for the buck is unbeatable imo, as these are heaters.
Ive had the 4U since February and it’s a fun club, but I’m wanting a lower loft and straight up tee monster. Should get that done with the 2U
I hit 145 ball speed with the 4U, what can I do with this?
Yes, I prefer this with the Elevate 95 shaft to the Speedzone 4i with the Catalyst 80
However, I prefer the F9 4i with the Catalyst 80 to both this and the Speedzone 4i
*I only hit these off the tee
I have both, and had the same shaft setup (Catalyst 80 6.5) and hit them against each other off tee and turf. It’s all about skill set and what you want, as well as the look you like. I prefer the Tec UT because of the shape and setup look as well as the flatter flight. The SZ is prime for launch and speed.
Depends on what you are after. I found the SZ 4i to be hotter, launch higher, but difficult to play from turf. The 4UT is easier for me to play from the fairway, but it isn’t as long. The FT 3UT could be the perfect compromise and they are easy to hit too.
SZ might be the way then if launch is your friend!
Delivery delayed, as has been everything I’ve gotten via USPS the past two months.
Should arrive amid the early week ice
Second shot was why we golf:

220 yard middle of the fairway finder on this Par 5
Plenty of forgiveness, slightly better ball flight for me still mid penetrating flight with the Elevate 95 than the TT DG105 in the set Forged Tec 4i and the SZ with Catalyst
Looking forward to how this helps my tee game go forward
Maybe I’ll get some mere mortal data if I get the time after delivery.

Those are my favorite kind of missiles. I’m beyond jealous of your purchasing decisions recently!
Im bound and determined to figure out a setup with flexibility for the course, distance, and weather at the top.
The "3" iron is on my radar to upgrade from my original generation UT.
Catalyst that’s cut way down. I’m either putting an GOST or MMT into it
I’ll add, this is the first one of their UT I’ve gotten on well with and enjoyed the feel as well as believing the adjustability to be a useful tuning tool.
Should be a fun experiment.
It’ll launch lower, but probably not as low as you expect. I prefer it to the SZ though.
Have not enjoyed my SZ 4i nearly as much since I put the hybrid shaft in. Still pretty high launch but having a harder time finding the center.
Curious how the experiment goes for ya as I might be looking for one (or a OL 3h ?) soon.
Beauty here though is you can turn it down to try and hit the window you want to see
I’ll be following this along, because off the tee my SZ 4i is a bit too high. Hopefully you find a good compromise with the 2U!
Let the honeymoon begin
Careful, you may only get one good round in and then have to give it away
i got it in my 4 iron spot. Been enjoying it so far! Lofted it up 1* and really enjoying it!
I have the kbs $ 130 in it. I have been thinking of a hybrid shaft as well. It’s a rocket off the tee
