The Titleist TS hybrids have been spotted out on tour for a bit, and today we will take a more detailed look at what they are all about. Born from the Titleist Speed Project that brought us the TS line of metal woods, the TS Hybrids are hitting stores August 30th.
TS stands for Titleist Speed, so Titleist TS means Titleist Titleist Speed. Odd name not withstanding, the new TS2 and TS3 are viewed by the company as scoring clubs, not rescue or utility clubs. A bit of a departure from a lot of talk that normally surrounds the hybrid launches, the company is extremely optimistic about what they have here in this line.
“Pretty much every golfer we’ve had test a TS hybrid has had the same reaction – these things just go,” said Josh Talge, Vice President, Titleist Golf Club Marketing. “When it comes to the world of golf clubs, hybrids don’t always generate the type of excitement you see with other categories. But with TS hybrids, our R&D team has developed a hybrid that players will start thinking about as their go-to club. A club they just can’t wait to hit.”
The first thing to know about the new line is there are two options. How you deliver the club head to the ball is how Titleist determines which option is best for you. The larger, almost fairway wood look of the TS2 will favor the golfer that has a sweeping delivery to the ball. The compact and square toe shape of the TS3 will be the ticket for the golfer that hits down on the ball. Obviously none of this is hard and fast, but generally speaking, this makes a lot of sense.
The TS2 features a higher launch and will be more forgiving laterally across the face. The TS3 offers more of a mid launch, and will be more iron like with control.
The technologies that Titleist believes gives them speed is the same. The new Speed Chassis, developed from their TS metal woods are in place and optimized for either shape, and they have a new thinner, faster face. It is actually 16% thinner than the previous 818 lineup, which is quite a feat when it comes to getting improved ball speed.
“Titleist hybrids were already by far the industry leader for hybrid performance, speed and distance – and now we’ve taken that to another level with these TS models,” said Stephanie Luttrell, Director, Metalwoods Development, Titleist Golf Club R&D. “By taking everything we learned in developing TS drivers and fairways and implementing those technologies into our hybrid platform, we’ve been able to improve our speed and distance performance while maintaining the incredible playability that makes these hybrids scoring clubs – that easy, consistent distance that launches high and lands soft, closer to the hole.”
Both models feature the SureFit Hosel that has 16 independent loft and lie settings so you can get dialed in, while the TS3 also features the Magnetic SureFit CG for more fine tuning. While we still believe they have the most confusing hosel adjustability available, there is little doubt that through independent fitting or their Titleist Thursday events, that it works well.
Titleist is offering 4 shafts in the stock lineup and have something to cover most golfers. Mitsubishi has you covered for high launch with the KURO KAGE Dual Core Black 60 and mid launch with the TENSEI AV Series Blue 70. Project X rounds out the rest with the HZRDUS Smoke Black 80 in the low/mid launch and the Even Flow T1100 White 90 for those that need to lower the launch even further.
Plenty of lofts available too. The TS2 has 17, 19, 21, 23, 25 and 27 degrees available, all in RH and LH other than the 17 degree, which is RH only. The TS3 has 19, 21, 23 and 25 degrees, with both RH and LH covered across the board.
