I've never been intrigued by the Japanese gear, so I don't know the answer to this question, but . . .

I seem to recall hearing/reading that Japan gear is subject to different standards and can potentially be non-conforming under USGA rules.

Does anyone know if that is accurate?
 
That is correct Harry. You must check with the USGA for each piece of equipment or company.
