2018-2019 College Basketball Season

That hook-and-hold flagrant foul on Vanderbilt, following yet another review, when they were up 76-70 late was a killer. The lead went from 6 to 2 in about 1 second, as Tennessee scored immediately after the inbounds following 2 more FTs from Williams (23-23 from the line last night).

The sequence in the last 15 secs of regulation was nuts.

Another light schedule tonight, as far as impact games:

(6) Michigan State at (19) Iowa
(21) NC State at (23) Louisville -- State needs Markell Johnson back, otherwise it may be a long night. Nwora will be a handful.
UAB at North Texas
Belmont at Murray State -- top 2 teams in the OVC in advanced metrics; Belmont already has 2 conf Ls (both to Jacksonville State [tied with Murray State at 6-0 in OVC]) and goes to Austin Peay (5-1 in OVC) next.
Memphis at Temple

Somebody's got to win the Pac-12:
Arizona at USC
Arizona State at UCLA
Washington at Oregon

Finally, the last undefeated team in the country starts the real grind in conference, after opening league play against teams that are a combined 3-23 in the ACC:

Clemson (14-5, 5-1) at (8) NC State (18-0, 5-0)

I will be at the Iowa game tonight, and as a betting man i would take MSU to cover the 4.5 pts... they are just so physical inside, and Garza really struggles against bigger/aggressive bigs. IMO the only way the hawks pull the upset would be if Moss steps up off of the bench and has a grear shooting night, as he is quietly Iowa's most talented guard.

Agree with your assessment but hope Iowa takes Sparty to the woodshed. MSU travels to Mackey on Saturday and would love to see them leave with a two game losing streak.

Tennessee won, but should not have. Vandy had a great game plan. Pure grit and determination, and Grant Williams, pulled it out.

Once again, we see suspect defense on the part of Tennessee. Not the same defensive team as it was last year.

One of my kids played with Grant when they first started playing AAU ball. He is as nice a person as you'd want to meet and extremely smart. He is a winner.

NC State vs Louisville has been a good one so far

Killed at the FT line. Again.

Belmont won by 13 at Murray State, and got some help when Eastern Kentucky knocked off Jacksonville State. Logjam at the top of the OVC now -- Murray State, Jacksonville State, and Austin Peay at 6-1, Belmont and Eastern Illinois at 5-2. Belmont at Austin Peay tomorrow.

SEC/Big XII Challenge today:

(24) Iowa State at (20) Ole Miss
(9) Kansas at (8) Kentucky

Other action:
Syracuse at (10) Virginia Tech
(12) Marquette at Xavier
(16) Auburn at (22) Mississippi State
Clemson at (21) NC State -- Markell Johnson is suited up for State; game-time decision; they need him back badly.
Belmont at Austin Peay -- Belmont looks to stay in the race for #1 in the OVC.
Davidson at St. Louis
VCU at Duquesne

In progress:

Georgia Tech 35
(2) Duke 27
18:00 2nd

Tech's zone is really bothering Duke. This is their worst 3FG shooting team under Coach K, at it is showing today.

A 6-0 spurt by Tech to start the half leads to a Duke timeout.

Not surprisingly, Duke came back and locked down Tech after that start to the second half. It will be interesting to see if State can right the ship. My eyes are set on the February 5th matchup with UNC.

Never a doubt.

Big 12 / SEC Challenge results from today: So far Big 12 leads 4-2

Baylor over Alabama
Iowa St over Ole Miss
TCU over Florida
Texas A&M over Kansas St
Okla St over S.Carolina
Georgia over Texas

Still to come:
Vandy vs Oklahoma
WVU vs Tennessee
Kansas vs Kentucky
Arkansas vs Texas Tech

Update:
Oklahoma leads Vandy big at half
Tennessee leads WVU big at half

Update of the update - Looks like both OU and Tenn are going to hold on and win
That would make the count Big12 5 SEC 3

West Virginia was up 16-5 at one point.

A bad Illinois team knocked off (13) Maryland by 11 at MSG.

In the final two games, Kentucky beats Kansas and Texas Tech beats Arkansas.
Final Results:
Big12 - 6
SEC - 4

19-7 actually duffer. Then the Vols lock down the D and went on a 28-2 run and never looked back. Could have been a 30 point win but Barnes pulled most starters with 4 to go. Still 17 point win, 83-66. Still #1.

GO BIG ORANGE!

Sparty is getting hammered in West Lafayette by Purdue. Still in the 2nd half but Purdue is tough at home. Boiler Up!

2nd half got interesting but the good guys came out on top! KenPom has them as 7th in the country now... Will this week finally be the week the voters start catching up? Boiler up!

Purdue was up 20 in the 2nd half and I went down to the pro shop at PGA National to ask about tee times (staying at the resort). We played 14 holes of twilight golf AND the Boilers hung on for a solid win. #awesome! This team is easy to like. Hammers down!

Light night tonight:

(2) Duke at Notre Dame
TCU at (16) Texas Tech -- winner stays 1 game back of the Kansas teams in the loss column.
Baylor at Oklahoma

Nearly full slates in the MEAC and SWAC, too.

MEAC undefeateds Norfolk State (7-0) and NC A&T (6-0) are off. NC Central and FAMU (4-2) are both on the road, trying to keep up them.

Prairie View A&M (6-0) at Arkansas-Pine Bluff (4-2) -- Pine Bluff can stay in the SWAC race with a home W.

This one just doesn't get old...loved seeing D Wade try it.

The 3 power conference games were snoozers, with halftime leads of 18, 16, and 18.

Oklahoma laid a rotten egg at home -- they're worst performance of the year, by far, with a Game Score of only 3 (by contrast, Virginia's 'worst' game of the year was a 91 vs Dayton). This may be the worst performance by a power conference team this year. They've gone 4-5 after an 11-1 start to the year before conference play.

PV A&M got the road win, effectively making the SWAC a two-team race with Alabama A&M. NCCU and FAMU both got road wins in the MEAC to stay within 2 games of first place.

One Top 25 matchup today: (3) Virginia at (23) NC State. State's run in the top 25 may be over after this one. This one may get ugly, the way State has played lately.

Lots of road games tonight for the Top 25:

(1) Tennessee at South Carolina -- UofSC has 3 good wins already in the SEC after 2 really bad non-conf ones (Stony Brook and Wyoming). The Vols are a different animal, though.
(7) Kentucky at Vanderbilt
(8) Nevada at UNLV -- 1st place in the Mountain West on the line.
(9) North Carolina at Georgia Tech -- the Heels have had some head-scratchers in the Thriller Dome over the years.
(11) Kansas at Texas
(22) Mississippi State at Alabama
(24) Wisconsin at Nebraska

Ohio State at (5) Michigan

Pittsburgh at Clemson -- the Tigers really need a W after Saturday's collapse. They're not a bad team.
Lipscomb at Liberty -- both 7-0 in the Atlantic Sun. Two good teams, 55 and 61 in Torvik's ratings, around middle-of-the-pack power conference teams (e.g. Arizona State, Indiana, Memphis, etc), between Clemson (45) and Pitt (69).
