Live Update Thread: 2019 Shaft up #3 from Olympia Fields

Event wrap-up:

First off thanks to THP, and UST for continually putting together these ShaftUp events that get better and better every year!! Thanks also to Ben Hogan for the driver heads there awesome! I will try not to be redundant with Nerdy's great wrap-up!

Thursday:
What a whirlwind of a day this was. I was nervous and I really don't know why. Danny put me at ease first thing on the driving range and my swing was all over the place. It went the way of the dodo during the fitting. Danny just calmly grabbed one of my irons handed it to me and I pured three or four iron shots. I grabbed the driver back and started to swing better and better. My gamer I was missing right and extremely right. Danny works quickly and we went from The ATTAS to the V2 Black and I really started hitting the ball better. I knew no flex or weight at this point. I just knew the V2 black felt stable and solid threw impact. I started hitting it straighter and straighter. I was fit for the 10.5* GS53 with the V2 Black 7F5. My main problem like Nerdy is my setup of my shoulders was open to my hips causing me to cut across the ball. He quickly diagnosed this and had me hitting the ball far more solid. And then came the North Course at Olympia Fields what an experience hole after hole of just beautiful terrain opened up before us. We had a caddy named Moises an engineering student at Kansas, and a real nice kid. The course has some teeth and is daunting. Bunkers are placed in the perfect locations to gobble up shots. My approach shot into #1 resulted in a fried egg in the face of the green complex needless to say Nerdy had my back. I did not hit too many memorable shots over the next couple of holes until the first par 3, which I put a good swing on a 8 iron from 165yds. Finally I started hitting some golf shots and hit a good drive on the next with the GS53 driver. I love the sound of this driver which has been written by everyone who has this driver in that thread, but its so good. I really can't recall a driver I like the sound of more. I continued to hit some lasers on the next few holes as I got accustom to Danny's advice and the new piece of equipment I was trying to execute it with. We came to one of the holes on the back nine and to say it was tight was an understatement. Nerdy hits first and he hit a bomb just left over a bunker into water we found out later. The caddy gives the its not safe sign and its my turn to step up to the plate. I pipe one with a baby cut straight down the middle and the longest drive I've hit of the day even snuck it past Danny which was nice! We half the hole with birdie. Nerdy and me played well together and on his red hot putting we went on to an smooth victory. We finished the day and went to get some dinner at the casino by our hotel. We were mixing many different Asian cuisines and all of it was delicious. Nerdy and me walked around the casino for awhile, I'm not a big gambler but did play WOF slot and then called it a night.

Friday:
Well there was a lot riding on the round this day. Proshop spending was beckoning us to finish strong and take the match this day. We had some breakfast at a place near the course and fueled up for the South Course. We warmed up a little and headed for the course. We putted before the round and I noticed that the South greens seemed faster than the North. Our caddy for this round was Michael who was in school at SMU, but was nothing like Bryson Dechambeau as he worked fast! Nerdy and me got off to a horrible start ,and JB and Danny pounced on us quick. Danny can golf his ball and he made a lot of birdies over the weekend. He went on a run of them early in the round and put us down 4 early. Not lost during any of this was the beauty of the South Course. I wished I would have played it better but just gorgeous golf hole after gorgeous golf hole. Elevated greens and well placed bunkers is the norm at South Course. After two holes of us both hitting OB we were in trouble. We halved six holes after that and started to make a comeback but it was to little too late. We headed back for the airport and ate a final meal together and headed our separate ways.

The Courses:
Olympia Fields was such a treat. I am going to be excited to see the North Course as the host of the BMW Championship next year. I loved both tracks and hard to pick a favorite. I think the only reason I lean toward the North Course is we played it better and that's not a good reason. Two very different beasts both have plenty of teeth and took their toll on my poor swing over the two days. From the clubhouse to the hospitality of the caddies and Max it was just a memorable experience and they really made us feel like members for our short stay. I don't know if I will ever play either of these courses again in my lifetime but they are both bucket list material!

Thanks to Danny for all the hospitality and kindness shown during the entire leadup and the actual event and even after. He is a scholar and a gentlemen and I am looking forward for him to come and visit where I work! I can't wait to put this driver through its paces and really stick with since it is fit to my funky swing. Glad I got to share this event with Will. It was great to get to know him and hear about his family and learn from a pro. Like almost every other THPer I’ve met he is just a great guy and I look forward to teeing it up with him again!

Just went through the thread and brought back memories of my time at OFCC with UST Mamiya. That place is epic. Looks like you guys had a hell of a time like expected!

BTW, nice pro shop haul!
