I was reading an article and thought it was an interesting discussion. It was an old article, but I thought it was an interesting read and wondered myself how I react or speak about golf versus golfing.

Is golf a noun or a verb?

One person was saying that serious people "play golf" not "go golfing"

Another stated that you are not a "golf player" you are a "golfer"

If you received a phone call would you tell the person: I am golfing, call you back after I am done or I am playing golf, call you back after I am done.

Grammatically, I guess both are correct. Yet, I find it interesting that some would disagree.

I'ma golfer who plays golf.

"Golfing" or "golf his ball" bother me as much as someone saying he or she is barbecuing when they are actually grilling. Philistines.

noun. NOT a verb.

The English language changes and grows. Read Beowulf, Chaucer, Shakespeare, then Harry Potter. Languages grow and change, yaÂ’all. We verb all kinds of nouns all the time as the world around us changes. We totes chop off all kinds of words. English is feet-on-the-coffee-table kinda casual. So I will go golfing and/or play golf, depending on mood.

But IÂ’ll stubbornly keep using The Incredible Shrinking Adverb.
