Golf while traveling?

Hey guys, I'm flying out to a wedding and thought I'd get some golf in while there to make it more... bareable.

I'm flying United, and wanted to know how much it costs to bring your clubs? if anyone knows. and if they are "safe" to fly with? or should I go with fedex?
Tips to keep the clubs safe without buying a hardshell travel case?
