The Morgan Cup - Want to be a Tour Player?

Hope it went well. Always fun playing tough tracks that are somewhat familiar because of big tournaments, etc.

Erin Hills tee time at 2:15. Walking with a caddie. High of 84*, reasonable humidity. Looking to play from 6,700 yards, but may go up to 6,400. From 6,700 there are four par 4s over 400. The par 3s are pretty reasonable. Par 5s are long as hell with a 620 yarder as the last. Really wish i was going into this round hitting the ball better with my irons than I have the last several rounds. We typically do a parade and other family stuff on the 4th, but I sent the females off to do that stuff themselves. Plan to get to the course nice and early to try and get the iron swing tweaked a bit on the range. I'm going in pretty confident with how the new Eggs are performing, and my short game has been solid.

Fees are more than I typically care to drop on a round of golf, so I hope to play well enough where I don't feel like I tossed the dough into the wind.

You're probably right, either way, best half minute of your life.

Erin Hills is a beast. Per the pro shop, it is an 8 1/2 mile walk. From what I recall, most of it up hill. There are some serious elevation changes. I feel like a sherpa. We played the "green" tees. 6,710 but they played closer to 6,800, because one par four listed on the card at 380ish, was set back at the "blue" tees and played 445. Which is just what I needed, another brutal par four. The fairways did allow for roll, so drives got out there pretty good. Distances between holes were almost always uphill, and many were lengthy. This course was built in natural glacier carved terrain and very little earth was moved during construction. The rough is "where the hell is my ball it should be right here", and the fescue beyond the rough is "hit a provisional it's about 20% chance you'll find your first ball" punishing. Many of the greens have false fronts, and in addition many are tiered. They were running at 12 on the stimp per the pro. It was the hardest golf course I have played as far as chipping/getting up and down. It was probably the hardest golf course I've ever played period.

I shot 85. 44-41. Putted beautifully. Two three putts from long range off the fringe. If I putt them, they're putts. I had three doubles, one triple, and one birdie. Several bad chips, one drive in the edge of the fescue that was sitting up, and one ridiculous lie at the edge of the bunker that led to the doubles. The triple I hit a second shot out of the rough with ball below my feet. With a 5i and shanked it into a hazard. The play was so dumb my caddie should have wrestled the club out my hands before I swung. I did not get up and down one time. Between the tight lies on the fescue fairways near the green and fast greens I did not get a chip close.

Keep in mind, while I have walked 18 holes following my daughter, it's been a while since I walked and played. I have never walked a course that comes close to this. But I held up pretty well. Was moving a little slow near the end, but hit my best drive of the day on the last, a 620 yard par 5. The R11 is going to be so money. After the first three hole, I hit it better and better as the day went along. The caddie would point, and I would shoot. Hit the one five feet into the long fescue on the 16th. We found it and the ball was sitting up. Took a swing and the ball went right under it. lol.

This was a really fun day, and I'm so glad I did it. It was great preparation for TMC. It was 86* and a little balmy. Not an inch of shade on the course. While not FL hot by any stretch, I walked the damn thing and came off the 18th green feeling pretty good. If I can walk this beast, I can ride around in a cart with a roof in 90+ degrees and humidity.

My nephew-in-law was unbelievable on the front 9. He hit every green in regulation and shot a minus one 35. Then decided to find the rough and fescue on the back for 45. Still, the 35 was a thing of beauty, but he was pretty unhappy about the back.

sounds like a good day Esox! Also sounds like a brutal walk. How did the new woods treat you?

Loved that write up Esox, that sounds like one great day.

Nice writeup and round esox. I bet you had such a good time today, I am jealous as I have never had a caddy before.

great write up esox, sounded like a awesome day on course, nephew-in-law sounds like he has some serious game.

The driver was phenomenal. Hiccups early and one on the 16th, but it was mostly money. Tempo, tempo, tempo. I did not over swing it on the course and the shaft loads great. I didn't hit the 3w. Played up to a number on all four par fives as all but one were well over 500 yards. I hit the hybrid twice. Once on a 450 par four that was so-so and lead to bogey. The second as my layup shot on the 620 yard last. That was a nice shot.

BTW, playing with a caddie rocks. Anyone that plays this course blind their first time on it is so screwed.

Going to be interesting to see how the U.S. Am goes. They can back this way, way, way back.

Dunno not really feeling it this morning, I had too much to drink last night to argue with some Paridisians. Plus I gotta to watch some practice rounds at the John Deere.
