Tiger Woods Withdraws From British Open

It's not fun to watch on television when he's not being shown. \

For some. I dont think everybody feels the same way. Lots of golf fans out there.

I think you're spot on with the ratings. I'm not sure if it is or not. You just have to hope that someone willcome through and take his spot Just doesn't look likely right now to happen soon.

People here may not be affected but wait till you see the ratings plummet. This isn't good for golf right now.

I tore my left ACL, same as Tiger, it's a daunting recovery process. I wonder if it will come out what the injury really is. Why keep that guarded?

I'm not a fan of anyone hacking it around the course and especially someone who did not appear to care to be there. No one wants to see that.

The problem is this is his fifth knee surgery I think. Also I agree when I heard he needs to change his swing or it's going to happen again because of the torque he puts on his knee.

Tapatalk... Loved by me hated by the wife.

Dang. There's goes my lock of the week. In the casino's sportsbook, they'll do round by round match-ups and they always give Tiger too much value. A few of us bet against him in the players championship...worked out well.

Call it year Tiger and concentrate 2012.

I don't care one way or another if he plays but I can understand why he's not. I would assume he wants to win if he plays in a tournament, and if he can't do that, he's not going to go out and play. Especially on a course that many pro's and SI thinks is just a bad course, where good shots sometimes aren't even rewarded. Some quotes from Sports Illustrated, "I've heard that if there is one Open to miss, it's Royal St. George's." "Players hate the course because they don't have control over the ball. It bounces every which way but straight." Anonymous pro- "The worst place you can drive it at Royal St. George's is down the middle of any fairway because your assured the ball won't end up in the fairway." "Can I tell it like it is? Royal St. george's is one of the worst major championship venues ever, It's definitely the worst stop in the Open rota." - another anonymous pro. But, if all these quotes and such are coming from a valuable sources, I completely understand why Tiger doesn't want to go and get beat up. It doesn't sound fun.

Tiger can just take the year off and I will not miss a beat watching my golf on TV. Still watch every tournament because I am a golf fan, not player specific fan.

Unfortunately you , and I, are the minority. The casual fan makes up the majority of the ratings and thats what feeds money into the PGA. Not the diehards like you and I.

I agree with you. I dont care who is playing. If they show 10 year olds in a tournament on TV I would watch..

Out of curiosity, what are the ratings like with Tiger as opposed to without Tiger? I imagine they drop quite a bit, but I have not seen that in writing. I know golf has its hard core fans who will watch either way, but its a business, it needs Tiger to be there to generate more viewers, get more ad revenue etc. I just dont see how it could be good for the game to not have him there.

Stick a fork in him because he's done for the year. If it was the achilles that everyone was saying then it's not surprising. That's a long rehab and it wouldn't surprise me if he targets Augusta next year as his "I'm finally back" moment.

They are lower. No question about it. That is why I said "everybody".

Again though, I dont think "everybody" thinks "its not fun when he is not on tv".
There are still MILLIONS that tune in.

I like watching Tiger when he is in good form, But I still watch golf every weekend with or without him.

True, I agree, just as there are millions that tune out when he is not there. I think I just get frustrated with the dismissive attitude (not from you) that it doesn't matter one way or another if he is there because everyone is better than him anyway. My point is simply, like him or not, it does matter.

I agree with you there.
I do think many feel the same way but opposite though. The feeling of 'when he's not there the tour is boring or doomed'. The PGA Tour was around before Eldrick and will be around after Eldrick.

Very true, so my question is: They have an opportunity here then to feel some heat and aggressively and creatively market the game to a new audience and prepare for the post Tiger world that will one day happen. Do you feel they are doing that? Or are they basically sticking to the staus quo as far as marketing, knowing that Tiger will be back to play one day and will bring viewers with him.

I honestly dont know as commercials on the Golf Channel, ESPN, and such down here are different.

I dont think the PGA Tour has ever done a good job of marketing to a new client. They rely on the product. To me this is no different than the 3 quarters of events that get played every year that have no chance of Woods showing up to because the course does not suit his game, his travel schedule, or whatever other reason is given. I guess I dont see it as a huge negative. Sure viewership will be down, but lets face it, the guy does not play a whole lot outside of the big events and never has. The tour moves on and continues to put out a great product.

I'm usually a big Tiger fan, but after seeing how well the young guy Fowler did this past weekend. And how well Mcilroy did a couple weeks ago, I think that golf is just as exciting. Throwing Tiger in the mix when he is 100% healed and 100% commited to his swing change will only make the sport that much better....

Another event with out Tiger. I guess I'll still watch it. His beard is awful. Don't grow one unless you can dude.

My thought once Steve Williams went to a new bag that Tiger was done for the year.

I know at one time GG had said that she had seen him at the gym that they frequent....Just wondering if he has been seen since reinjuring his leg at the masters?

I thought the same thing when I heard that he would be working for someone else.

LOL at all the Tiger haters. Eldrick is the greatest golfer to ever walk the planet and will be back and as dominant as he ever was. This is coming from a guy who is disgusted by his MANY marital indiscretions and his poor bedside manner with fans and the media.

of course the flipside could read:

LOL at all the Tiger lovers. Eldrick was the greatest golfer to ever walk the planet and may never be back or as dominant as he used to be.
