My dog needs your thoughts/prayers

Sorry to hear about your little buddy Floppy. I will pray for him. I have two big dogs that are like my sons. They aren't very good watch dogs, lol, but I love them with all my heart. I know how you feel. Roscoe I have had for almost 13 years. I can't imagine how I will react when he's gone. My thoughts are with you.

Thanks for all the kind wishes.
We're gonna bring him in to a second specialist to get a second opinion so we can get a better idea of how to treat it. This next guy apparently has very good knowledge of this drug, so hopefully all goes well.

That is Great. I often wish that I had done that. Hope it works out for you

Big time dog person here. I'll be thinking of you and your family. It's really rough to have your dog go through this. Just give him all your love. He just doesn't know what's going on. Let us know the results of the second opinion and any progress.

Best of luck Floppy. Labs are just wonderful dogs. If only people were as gentle and kind-hearted.

I am so sorry to hear about this Floppy, you and your best friend are in my thoughts and prayers. I had to go through the same thing a couple months ago, as I had to suddenly put my 12 year old Boxer Lab mix down one night after coming home from work. The one thing I would advise is just do what is right for the dog, don't put him through any unnecessary pain so you can keep him around for yourself. But I wish you the best and keep us posted!

Awww Floppy, my heart goes out to you. I know your pain all too well as I just lost my 13 year old collie last year. There are a lot of people on this site who love their pets and we will certainly be pulling for your dog to make it through this.

It's painful to see a pet get down to the point where it's a choice to keep em alive or do what's right and put em down. I know it hurts like hell to take a dog to the vet knowing you are going to see him/her for the last time. I will never forget looking into Missy's beautiful brown eyes for the last time. It broke my heart and still does everytime I see a pic of her. It hurts Floppy and my prayers are with you to make the right decision, even though it may be extremely painful.

Thought I'd update.

Went to the oncologist a few days ago and they said he's extremely healthy besides the cancer and that a more traditional, aggressive chemo would be best -- maybe switching to Palladia afterwards.

Today he got his first chemo treatment. No side affects yet, so that's good. He's normal. :p

Although apparently his feces, urine, and saliva are toxic... they can cause cancer for 24 hours after treatment... so we have to wear gloves and stuff when handling stuff like his eating bowls, cleaning up his uhh..stuff... in the yard, etc.

Here's to hoping the chemo works. He's going back in two weeks for another session.

It's EXTREMELY expensive (grand total of $6500!!), so no golf or anything like that... cheap dinners, etc. It's amazing what you'll do for a dog.. they're definitely family members.

Thats fantastic . I'll be praying that this treatment works for him. Be careful when handling those items ....

Will keep your family in our prayers. Hope all works out for the best.

Got my fingers crossed for you. Hope the treatment does the trick.

Best wishes, again, Floppy.

Yes, dogs can be very expensive to treat, I know firsthand, big time! I know we have talked about it, but thought I'd throw this back out there for anyone else in this thread, that pet insurance is cheap, about $300 a year per animal when compared to treating something major. Both our dogs have it now and any dog we have in the future will as well. We use VPI (www.petinsurance.com). Another good one we are possibly considering is Trupanion (http://www.trupanionpetinsurance.com/).

Unfortunately for me, I had been on the fence about it and still hadn't gotten the insurance when Bandit got sick. Lesson learned. Our other dog got it the next week and our new puppy got it right away.

Giving an update here as it's the first time I can actually give one as he was tested today.

Chemo didn't work. According to the doctor the cancer is a little worse. We're gonna wait to talk to the vet oncologist before making any decisions going forward.

So not good news, but figured I'd update and again thank you guys for the kind wishes.

If you ever have to put your dog on prednisone for am extended period of time....it's badddd stuff. Just because of this drug he's gone from "otherwise healthy dog" to old and weak. He's lost practically all his muscle and is weak. He's gone from 14 but looking like he's 10...to 14 but looking like he's 16.

On the lone bright side, he's still enjoying life. He still hangs out with me in my room and begs for table scraps.

My prayers are with you buddy! I recently had to put down our beloved dog Missie and it was not something I would want to live through again. I tear up thinking about the old gal.

Sorry to hear, Floppy. Yes, I know about the Prednisone and dogs. Pretty bad stuff. Bandit was on it for over a year.

Damn Floppy I'm sorry to hear that. My thoughts and prayers are with you, your family and your dog. Still gets at me anytime I see a picture of Mags but you gotta do whats best for them and you're doing everything you can. Best wishes dude.

Prayers sent for you and your family floppy. It's tough to hear things like that about your pet that has been around so long. I can certainly relate. Lost our dog Cheyenne "shiner" three years ago, she was a 14 yo yellow lab that grew up with our kids as well.

This really hits home with me. Lost 2 dogs in less than a year. They really are family members. God bless and you will be in my thoughts and prayers.

Tap tap taparoo

So sorry to hear that Floppy. When the time comes for my buddy I know I will be a mess too. You know your THP family will be here for you if you need us.

My thoughts are with you and your family. Unconditional love is what our dogs give us for their lifetime. Unfortunately, the price for this love is a finite time they have with us.

My thoughts are with you and your dog. As you can see by my picture I love my dog and I have lost one dog to cancer so I understand your pain. Hoping everthing works out.

Spoilers for not a good subject. But if the time comes it's the best advice I can give.

Spoiler
If the time comes, if you are emotionally able to, be there with him. There is no right or wrong whether you are there or not but with Bandit, not only were my wife and I there, but his "sister" was too. Hardest thing I ever did, but afterwards was glad that I didn't just leave him alone. I was actually holding him.

Too often you hear about the pets in the house who are left behind to search and look for their friend who is missing. Tara never did that. She obviously grieved, but she knew what happened as she climbed up on the table and smelled his snout. She knew he was gone. I think it's important to have everyone there, if you can handle it.

Add my thoughts as well. My pooch is 9.5 and gave us a scare recently. I dread the day. Thinking of you all.

Just went throught the same thing a few months ago floppy, our thoughts are with you.

Thoughts and prayers with you and your boy Floppy! I've got three labs myself(3, 4, and 14) and can't imagine what you are going through.
