Cano is a very good 2nd baseman? He's over the age of 25 so he is not considered a extremely young anymore. He hit .271 last year. People forget quickly that when he was brought up to the majors he was an after thought. They were auditioning him to trade him off as a prospect for a big ticket item. However he played so well that they found out he could hit in the majors. But he was hitting in an all-star lineup for years. Now that with the exception of A-Rod they are mostly average hitters (or were last year) his numbers fell because he didn't just see all strikes.

The whole team had an off year, not just Cano.

Looks like its been a busy night.
Edwin Jackson is going to Detroit, JJ Putz is going to the Mets and the Yankees have offered Burnett a five year deal, this is according to Rosenthal so take it for what its worth.

The Yankees dont buy players right? They just signed Burnett too. So that puts their total on two players at over $250 million. Nice. Way to keep ruining baseball.

haha, ruining baseball. If they have the money, why WOULDN'T you use it? To keep it FAIR for the other teams? lol

I think when the Yankees are a good team, its good for baseball. But I could see these huge contracts really ruining it for other teams. However if your a free market capitalist, this just seems to go with that theory.

And they wonder why the NFL is king. Because everybody has a chance. The Yankees just keep overpaying for average players. $250 million in 2 pitchers. That is absurd.

NFL is king because you have no choice. You're acting like the Yankees are the only team with a big payroll.

1 (1) Yankees $209,081,579 $195,229,045 $13,852,534
2 (9) Tigers $138,685,197 $95,180,369 $43,504,828
3 (3) Mets $138,293,378 $117,915,819 $20,377,559
4 (2) Red Sox $133,440,037 $143,526,214 ($10,086,177)
5 (4) White Sox $121,152,667 $109,680,167 $11,472,500
6 (5) Angels $119,216,333 $109,251,333 $9,965,000
7 (8) Cubs $118,595,833 $99,937,000 $18,658,833
8 (6) Dodgers $118,536,038 $108,704,524 $9,831,514
9 (7) Mariners $117,993,982 $106,516,833 $11,477,149
10 (13) Braves $102,424,018 $89,492,685 $12,931,333
11 (12) Cardinals $100,624,450 $90,286,823 $10,337,627
12 (17) Blue Jays $98,641,957 $79,925,600 $18,716,357
13 (14) Phillies $98,269,881 $89,368,214 $8,901,667
14 (15) Astros $88,930,415 $87,759,500 $1,170,915
15 (18) Brewers $81,004,167 $71,986,500 $9,017,667

Yes, the Yankees have a lot higher than any other team, but a lot of teams have a huge payroll.
Until there is a salary cap put in place, it's gonna happen.

Posting that list does little to justify your argument. At over $70 million more than the 2nd place team, thats more than the difference between the team in second and the team in 15th.

They don't have a higher salary that's "a lot more" than the next team, it's 50% more. That's like a team and a half. Sounds like a level playing field to me.

50% is a lot more...I don't see your point, lol, I already said they had the highest pay roll by a wide margin, but other teams still have a very high payroll.

I agree completely. Bring in a uniform salary cap.

I'm finally coming around to the idea of a salary cap in baseball, it's just out of control. The Royals payroll is "only" going to be around $70mil, while that is a ridiculous number, it's over $130mil less than the Yankees. How in the hell can they compete?

It is absurd what the Yankees spend compared to everyone else. To have a roster made up of those salaries shows exactly what is wrong with baseball. A salary cap works and is needed.

The funny thing about that list, is that only 2 of the top 5 payroll teams made the playoffs. I think a well run team can keep up with these massive spenders, look at the A's, Twins, Indians,Brewers, etc.. I say let them spend all they want and I will laugh again when they dont make the playoffs.

Gasman,
You are right to an extent. However every one of those teams has one thing in common. That every time they get a "star", they cannot afford to resign them.

Only 2 out of 5 last year. I don't know, but what about the years before that? And who spent the most each year when the Yankees won what, 4 out of 5 years or something? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm thinking it was the Yankees, every year.

JB: case in point: Carlos Beltran, Jermaine Dye and Johnny Damon, to name three Royals real quick.

Where's Manny going to end up? I heard he is threatening to hang up his spikes if he doesn't get the money he's wanting. (I was going to say hang up his glove, but it wouldn't really bother anybody)

He will be in Dodger Blue, because nobody else will take him. Although Washington has a slight interest.

If you look how Billy Beane does it Oakland, he gets rid of his players for a ton of talent in return. He is not afraid to pull the trigger. They have a few off years and then they get competitive again. Shapiro has started doing the same in Cleveland, in fact he started this recent trend of locking up the youngsters.

The always have the highest payroll, but they havent won since 2001. Plus when they were winning they had a lot of gritty players that made that team, it wasnt the big superstars.

Gasman,
But none of those teams has been competitive for years. You can say Oakland has somewhat, but not really to the point of being relevent.

The Angels and Giants supposedly have interest, but I just think they are trying to drive up the price on Manny just to piss McCourt(LA owner) off.

The Giants know very well how 1 player (ass and all) can bring the fans in.

Cleveland 2 years ago was a game away from the World Series. Im not saying there is as much parody as the NFL, but MLB has had 7 different champs in the last 8 years.
