UFC/Mixed Martial Arts

i love watching his street fight videos on youtube. geez, he is intimidating looking! i heard he is a big softy though with a wife and kids

supposedly he only lost one street fight. and it was to a mma fighter. the vid is online somewhere. kimbo basically just gives up

softy or not if I saw that coming at me I would run like hell as well. Now if I saw him on the streets in regular clothes maybe he wouldn't scare me, but decked out in his fighting gear with the crazy hair, bulging muscles, and funky chest hair I would run crying like a baby.

ive never seen that one. the only street fights ive seen him in he dominated

you are right:

Street Fights 7-1
MMA 4-1

Im surprised you guys havent brought up Brock Lesnar yet. I remember watching him back when he was in the WWE and now I see he is in MMA.

yeah I was going there next. At first I thought he would just be another Kimbo. An over-hyped attraction to draw in the casual fan. And even though I totally disagree with the decision to give him a title shot after only 3 fights which he went 2-1, he seems to be the real deal. Of course his first defense is against Frank Mir who beat him in their first encounter. If he can get a serious ground/sub game then he may last. But I still have my doubts and I will be surprised if he is successful in his first title defense.

Well, he does have a pretty strong amateur wresting background (was big 10 champion in college), so who knows.
I think that was the problem with Kimbo, he seemed to be a great striker but had no ground skills.
Its like as soon as he got someone on the ground he didnt know what to do.
I think Lesnar is a joke too, but we'll see...

He was the NCAA champion in 2000. He definitely has solid wrestling skills. and his power is insane. His stand-up and gnp is solid as well. his main problem is going to be when he is on his back and has to defend against subs. you saw what happened with Mir. and Mir crushed Nog. Lesnar has beaten a nobody, an average fighter and a washed-up old man. His only loss was against a legit opponent. so yeah...we shall see.

Concerning Kimbo...all he had was striking. Yeah if he caught a guy with a big shot he had a chance but that was it. most mma fighters are talented in multiple dimensions. they purposely put kimbo against opponents he was almost guaranteed to beat. did you see when he fought james thompson with the grotesque califlower ear? and thats why both kimbo and EliteXC are gone.

I am a fairly strong casual fan. I have a pretty strong wrestling background, and a couple of guys I know have dabbled in MMA. A good friend's uncle had 5 UFC fights (including a win over Fiorivanti sp?- big win there) before Dana White decided he no longer had a use for him. Tough as nails though. I like following it though, the tactical side interests me for many of the same reasons that wrestling did.

Lesnar was an NCAA champ and runner up to Stephen Neal the year before. Neal went on to win a world championship in freestyle before getting a tryout with the Patriots. He is still with them and has started at guard for several years, winning three super bowls as a mainstay on the O-line.

So yeah, fairly big fan. It is amazing how many of the wrestlers I have covered are now making their way there. I remember watching Gray Maynard and CB Dolloway win their high school wrestling state titles, and they are both doing well for themselves in the UFC. Wrestling just brings a good background for it.

Here are two former high profile college wrestlers to watch for moving up the ranks- Jake Rosholt and Johnny Hendrix. They were on the same great Oklahoma State teams, and are both doing extremely well. I would also say Cain Velazquez but he is already somewhat established. He will be a great heavyweight very soon.

who's your friends uncle?
