When we had to put Bandit down, it was hard on everyone. Me, my wife, and especially our other dog, Tara. It was obvious she was sad. Luckily, she smelled Bandit after he died, so she knew he wasn't coming back (so she never once looked for him like you hear dog friends doing, looking for their friend). A month later, we found Charlie. And while he helped our hearts heal, he did wonders for Tara.Hate reading this. I hated going through it myself.
One thing Ive felt is that do not hesitate to get another dog(after mourning of course). If you feel a dog is an integral part of the family, than after mourning, get one. You are not trying to replace the old dog, and you never will, but not hearing those paws walk around hardwood or seeing a tailwagging hairy friend as soon as you come in the door is something that will truly make a family unhappy.
Dude, this may seem a little sappy (and may get you a little dusty perhaps), but our vet sent us a card today with condolences for the loss of Hacker last week. Included in the card was this poem. Kelly couldn't even get all the way through it, and I had to go into another room. I thought of you and the loss of your family friend after I got done reading it and thought I would share it with you. You may have seen it, you may not have, but I am sharing anyways.
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....
