And why should we care about something so trivial as the resignation of the men's golf coach from a virtually unknown Division II school in the panhandle of Texas?

Well, because the men's golf coach at WTAMU is (was) Ryan Leaf.
Yes, that Ryan Leaf - former Washington State University standout quarterback, second overall draft pick of the San Diego Chargers in the 1998 draft (behind only Peyton Manning), and massive NFL flop.

Apparently, Leaf is still making bad decisions. In his role as a QB coach for the WTAMU football team, Leaf asked a player for a prescription pain pill "to deal with a lingering injury" he sustained in the NFL.

After taking leave of absence, Leaf resigns as West Texas A&M assistant

CANYON, Texas -- West Texas A&M quarterback coach Ryan Leaf has resigned, the school announced Thursday.

Leaf, who also served as the school's men's golf coach, has been on a leave of absence for personal reasons. A person briefed on the situation said that Leaf acknowledged he had asked a West Texas A&M player for a pill to help him deal with lingering pain from an injury Leaf had sustained during his NFL playing days, ESPN's Joe Schad reported Wednesday.

"Coach Leaf offered his resignation this morning, which I accepted," WTAMU athletic director Michael McBroom said. "He does not want his personal issues to become a distraction to the players that he has coached for the past three seasons.

"I wish Ryan all the success in the world. He's been a part of our family for the past three years and it's always hard to lose a member of your family. But we will move on and so will Ryan Leaf."

Offensive coordinator Scott Parr will coach the quarterbacks for the remainder of the season.

Jimmy Jameson, former WTAMU golfer and the husband of women's golf coach Meredith Jameson, will become interim men's golf coach. A national search will be conducted next spring for a permanent replacement.

Geeze, he's turned into another burnout junkie loser.

Good thing he's gone from the college. Those kids don't need to see that kind of crap. Canyon's a nice little town, and WTAMU was one of the schools I was thinking about attending when I was at that point.

Only living up to his reputation of a loser douchebag!!! My fondest memory is of him being all tough guy in the locker room with a reporter. Looks like good things do happen to good people.:sarcastic:

Leaf wanted on drug charges

Ryan Leaf is a wanted man in Texas -- and not on the football field.

A warrant was issued for Leaf's arrest on May 20 in Randall County after he failed to turn himself in on drug and burglary charges, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported. On the same day, a county grand jury issued nine charges against him in connection with hydrocodone, a prescription painkiller.

"At one point he said he was going to turn himself in. He hasn't turned himself in yet, and if he gets picked up he's going to be arrested," county prosecutor Lacy Miller said, according to the report. "If he gets picked up out of our jurisdiction, then we will extradite him or use whatever means we have to get him back. Right now he is a wanted individual."

Leaf, 33, had been undergoing drug treatment in British Columbia, Canada, according to the Randall County district attorney's office.

The indictment charged the former San Diego Chargers quarterback and former West Texas A&M quarterbacks coach with one count of burglary to a habitation, seven counts of obtaining a controlled substance by fraud and one count of delivery of a simulated controlled substance.

The indictment alleged Leaf presented an incomplete medical history to several physicians between January 2008 and September 2008 to get or try to get hydrocodone.

Canyon (Texas) police Lt. Dale Davis said Leaf is suspected of breaking into an apartment in Canyon on Oct. 30 and stealing hydrocodone, which had been prescribed to an injured football player.

Leaf could not be reached for comment, and a message left for him at his parents' home was not returned, the Union-Tribune reported.

Leaf, the second overall pick in the 1998 NFL draft, played for the Chargers from 1998 to 2000 and also played for the Dallas Cowboys in 2001. He threw for 3,666 yards and 14 touchdowns in his career.

Question here- what is his golf resume? It has to be respectable to be a college coach.

"JUST KNOCK IT OFF!"

Intercepted: Ryan Leaf arrested at Canadian border

By JEFF CARLTON Associated Press Writer

DALLAS (AP) - Former NFL quarterback Ryan Leaf posted a $45,000 bond Wednesday in Washington for drug and burglary charges out of Texas after being arrested by customs agents as he returned to the United States from Canada.

James Farren, the district attorney in Randall County in West Texas, said Leaf was arrested Wednesday by federal customs agents. Legal assistant Jennifer Bonstein said Leaf declined to waive extradition during a hearing Wednesday afternoon in Bellingham, Wash., about 90 miles north of Seattle.

Wendy Jones, chief corrections deputy for the Whatcom County Jail, confirmed that Leaf posted bond Wednesday evening.

Leaf's attorney in Washington told the court Leaf would post the bond and return to Texas by himself. Leaf also was to come back to court in Whatcom County on July 16, Bonstein said.

Bill Kelly, Leaf's attorney in Texas, said his client was returning to Texas to turn himself in by a Thursday deadline.

"I assume when he was crossing the border, they picked him up," Kelly said.

The ex-Washington State University and San Diego Chargers quarterback is charged with burglary to a habitation, a second-degree felony. Leaf also was indicted on seven counts of obtaining a controlled substance by fraud and one count of delivery of a simulated controlled substance.

Leaf coached quarterbacks at West Texas A&M in Canyon, where the indictment was returned in May.

Leaf, who resigned from West Texas A&M after being investigated for drug crimes in November, was working in British Columbia, his attorney said. Kelly, a former head football coach at the college, said Leaf "has been to rehab and successfully completed it."

Leaf, who coached for three seasons at West Texas A&M, spent four seasons in the NFL after being chosen with the No. 2 pick in the 1998 draft by the Chargers.

In his NFL career, which included stints with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Dallas Cowboys, Leaf had 14 touchdowns and 36 interceptions. He was better known for outbursts directed at teammates, coaches, fans and reporters.
