So we get home from dinner and get an email from Paypal that our account is frozen and further investigation is needed. In the email it says that this takes place because of our site handling "gambling".

So we get on the phone with them and this is what they tell us, the account was frozen for gambling because of the charity raffle that we held. Even though our attorneys cleared it and so did the charities, and all the companies that we dealt with said some paperwork was needed but it works for them too, Paypal felt as though it was gambling and froze our account.

Our store does not even have the charity raffle listed and the event took place 3 months ago, but they shut it down now. They said because of the holiday weekend, they cannot even answer our questions until Monday. ALSO ABSURD.

So what they are telling us, is that they can hold our money and not give us any reason or recourse to do anything about it. It makes no sense whatsoever to me. Maybe WSE can chime in with something on this. Our site is not linked to gambling and our charity raffle had all proceeds go to charity including more money from GG and I. None of that money is even in the paypal account as it was sent to the charities a while back.

Just another reason that some company needs to come up with a consumer friendly version of online banking, because this one does not work. I know dozens of people that have been ripped off long term by them including me. This issue I am sure will be resolved, but in the end, because of the power they control and the money they control, they can do whatever they want it seems.

Have you looked into using a Google Checkout setup instead?

We have not, but we may soon.

I have never heard of Google having issues....
Unfortunately, Paypal is almost the only game in town now....
My bank does free online checking...I just need an address and a name.
Sort of like a Cashiers Check/Money Order except I dont have to go out of the house...
Now pulling money in...thats another story...

Paypal just does not have the manpower/technology to cover all the "gotchas" involved with being the arguably largest "online" bank in the US....

That sucks. I've never had any problems with paypal.

How can they just assume it's gambling?

Just out of curiosity and the fact that I am NOSY! Did you have quite a bit in there? I only ever pay, but sometimes I get refunds, but I always have a zero balance in Paypal. I never keep any money in there, just what is needed for a transaction I am making. I know it's probably different for people with a store.

At any rate, that SUCKS!

Holy crap. I hope you didnt have a lot on there. Ive heard HORROR stories about Paypal as Im sure most have. That kind of stuff really pisses me off. I hope you get it worked out. RIDICULOUS!
Like Smalls said, I usually empty mine ASAP

It did not have a lot, but it had all the belt buckle money as well as the money that we were sending to pay for the buckles. So it was enough to be very nervous about.

A-Holes!.... All OF EM!

????? I really don't know. Certainly didn't see this coming though. Sounds like one of those snafus that happens when the overlapping state and federal regulations get too complicated. Hope you get it resolved Monday quickly and without too much difficulty.

Paypal bites. Sorry you have to deal with this guys, I hope it gets all worked out!

That is Horse :poop: !!!! All you and THP were trying to do was help a couple really good causes and this is how you are repaid!! I am outraged by the actions pay-pal has taken!! guess it is ok for people to pay for sexually explicit material through them but a harmless CHARITY raffle waves a red flag???

Wow,Sorry to hear about that.I feel lucky to not have any issues with them at this moment (Knocking on wood as we speak). Hopefully this will get cleared up for you.

That sucks JB, I've hated PayPal from the beginning. It's always a PIA dealing with them. Good luck

I guess you can look at it two ways:

1. Paypal is a stupid website with dumb rules run by ignorant bums

2. Or at least theyre looking out for stuff, and not letting E-criminals rob me blind

But if my money was tied up-i would go with 1 for a while until it got resolved, then i would be more of a 2

Said it before, I'll say it again . . . I can't wait until Google decides to open an auction site to compete with eBay.

You and me both Harry. It looks like they have denied our claim. They said we were associated with a gambling/casino site due to our charity raffle and we must take down our store and paypal logos (despite the fact that we have no raffle tix for sale). Then we may have our account reopened. It is absolutely absurd.

We checked with our attorney ahead of time about the charity raffle to ensure that because we received no proceeds, it was not considered any form of gambling. This is just over the top ridiculous and I am actually still in a little bit of a shock over the fact that it can take place.

I am no huge fan of PayPal, but I think the problem is with ebay's ownership as much as PayPal. I have lost all respect for eBay over the past few years. Anything they touch tuns to poo. I know a number of folks who used to (note - used to) have eBay businesses that pulled in up to $100K a year. They've all closed up shop because eBay (and PayPal) are so fundamentally evil to deal with.

I'm sorry you guys are caught up in this. I wonder if there's any way for us to recall our funds for the belt buckles and send you a check instead?

Unfortunately there is not. But thank you so much 92. I agree the ownership has been poor on the service side of both.

Hey JB - Have you given any thought to publicizing what Paypal did? Nothing like a little bad press to get them to switch gears - especially when it's stated that the raffle proceeds have already been donated out of the account to the charity.

Nothing like fighting fire with fire. :eyepoke:

We have talked to our attorney about it and they have advised against it. They said it is just not worth it.

Our store had to be taken down (clearly absurd) because of this entire issue. But we will have it all worked out soon.

Good luck. Sorry you have to deal with that.
